REGISTRATION

All participants are registered through the Church Music Department. No registration is accepted atfestival locations. A student may register for a festival other than the area in which they live,but must attend the festival where they are registered. Registration fee is $10 for each participantand is nonrefundable. It is very helpful if the requested information on the registration forms is pro-vided by the teacher(s). Send all registration forms at the same time with one check or money orderfor the fees to: Wyndy South, Church Music Department, MBCB, P.O. Box 530, Jackson, MS 39205-0530.

The Keyboard Festivals are planned by the keyboard contract consultant, and the director of the Church MusicDepartment, MBCB. Throughout the state, they are ably assisted by ministers of music, local pianists, organists,and music teachers. It is our desire that the preparation for these festivals, with the challenge and inspiration ofparticipating in them, will assist Mississippi Baptists in establishing, enlarging and improving the music ministryof their churches.

Please call on us when we can be “at your service.” May God bless you as you seek to serve His people by“Sharing the Song of Jesus” through the ministry of church music.

PARTICIPANTS10th, 11th and 12th grade students in the AreaKeyboard Festivals who achieved a SUPERIORrating in Category IV Piano or Advanced Organon the playing of a hymn accompaniment,hymn arrangement and selection from tradi-tional piano or organ literature. Studentsmust participate and pass a proficiency withan 8 or above (superior) in order to qualify tobe invited to State. Eligible participants willreceive a written invitation to attend the STATEKEYBOARD FESTIVAL from the keyboard con-tract consultant, Church Music Department,Mississippi Baptist Convention Board. A registra-tion form with complete details and instruc-tions will be included with the invitation.

REGISTRATION FEE$15 per participant which is nonrefundable.When participating in piano and organ thetotal fee is $25. Please fill out a separate formfor each instrument

REQUIREMENTS FOR PIANISTS AND ORGANISTSAt the STATE KEYBOARD FESTIVAL, each par-ticipant will play the same hymn accompani-ment, hymn arrangement, and selection fromtraditional piano or organ literature presentedat the area festival. The selection from traditionalpiano literature WILL BE from memory. Theselection from traditional organ literatureNEED NOT be memorized.

COLLEGE MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS Requirements for the $200 college musicscholarships are the same for pianists andorganists. A $200 one time music scholarshipto a Mississippi college will be awarded to eli-gible candidates who receive a SUPERIOR rat-

ing at the STATE KEYBOARD FESTIVAL on thepresentation of their three selections and hasreceived a superior rating on all proficiencyareas prior to the State Keyboard Festival. Thescholarship is to be utilized by the recipientwithin the school year it is received and willbe used for the study of piano or organ. Youmust participate at the State Festival the yearyou wish to qualify for the college scholarship(senior year).

SCHOLARSHIPSWhen a scholarship recipient chooses toattend a Mississippi Baptist college (BlueMountain College, Blue Mountain; MississippiCollege, Clinton; William Carey University,Hattiesburg) the college music departmentwill present a matching music scholarship of$200. Any questions regarding this award(scholarship limits, caps, etc.) should be direct-ed to the festival coordinator whose contactinformation is on page 1. See the bottom ofpage 9 for more scholarship information.

• Play the hymn through once with no singing or directing• as written, without an introduction and with the pedal

Pause just a second, THEN• play an appropriate introduction (that has been previously explained to the group leader)

• play the entire first stanza again • following a music director, as the congregation sings• with the pedal

CATEGORY IIIGrades 4-12 (Simplified Hymnals ARE NOT an acceptable source for this category)This is for students who are playing from a hymnal (seesources, page 1). If a hymnal is used other than one ofthose listed, the participant must provide a hymnal forboth the judge and the group leader.It is suggested that the teachers practice conducting thehymn and singing while the student plays.The participant should be prepared to explain their intro-duction to the group leader before beginning. Hymnsand arrangements in this category are not memorized.(Be sure to fill in the name of the arranger on the registra-tion form.) After selecting a hymn (in advance), the stu-dent should be prepared to:

• Play hymn as written through one time• with an introduction (see above)• with the pedal• following a music director as the congregation sings• Optional – May include additions (improvisation)appropriate to the character of the hymn

Following the hymn portion of this category, the partici-pant will play a 3-4 minute arrangement of the samehymn (not memorized). Measures are numbered begin-ning with the first measure. ANY part of a measure countsas a full measure when numbering. Editing is allowed, ifclearly marked. Repeats are not necessary (except for D.C.al fine) and should be clearly marked out if student is nottaking them. Adjust measure numbers as needed. Playfrom published music. No medleys. The student may playhis/her own arrangement, or a non-published arrange-ment. Music must be provided for the judge. The partici-pant may have a page turner.

Category IV - SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

Category IV/Advanced Organ students must participate and receive a Superior rating (8 or above)at the Area Festival in the areas of Hymn Accompaniment, Hymn Arrangement, and TraditionalLiterature, and a Proficiency of their choice (Sight Reading, Accompanying, orModulation/Transposition. This should be done every year they participate in these categories.

When this criteria has been met, they will be invited to participate in the State Keyboard Festival inFebruary and will present the same Hymn, Arrangement, and Traditional selection from the AreaFestival at this festival. Proficiencies are not presented at the State level.

When they are a senior, and they have received a Superior score on all three of their Proficiencies,and they have participated and scored Superior on the other selections at the Area Festival for thatyear, they will receive an invitation to the State Festival. They must participate at the State level andpass their Hymn, Arrangement, and Traditional selection with superiors to qualify for the CollegeScholarship Award. Students who qualify will be notified by the festival coordinator. The awardmust be requested in writing.

Seniors are also welcomed to apply for the Ralph M. Taylor Keyboard Scholarship. This will includean application and a written statement of intent with declaration of proposed major (must major inpiano or organ) along with a paragraph of 100 words or less of their career plans (goals, dreams,etc.).

SECTION IV – PROFICIENCIESIf you are in the 10th through 12th grade and are par-ticipating in Advanced Organ, you must complete aproficiency each year so that you will have completedall three proficiencies by the 12th grade. You must reg-ister for a different proficiency each year.When asuperior rating is achieved on a proficiency, you havecompleted it. You must pass all three proficiencies witha superior rating in order to be eligible for the collegescholarship (see page 10 for other scholarship eligibilityrequirements). If you have completed all of your profi-ciencies with a superior rating before your 12th grade,it is not necessary to register for one. Sight-reading Proficiency: If you choose this proficiency,you must be prepared to do the following:1. Sight-read a hymn. Be prepared to use your pedal.2. Sight-read a choral anthem that has been

selected by the festival coordinator. Pedal will be usedon accompaniment.

3.You must be prepared to play the vocal parts or theaccompaniment. There will be NO singing or direct-ing. The judge will select which you will play andhow much of the anthem you will play.

The participant may have a page turner. No one elsemay accompany you to the proficiency room.

Accompanying Proficiency: If you choose this proficiency,you must be prepared to do the following:• Play the accompaniment of an anthem (title

below) while a music director leads. NO SINGING.• Be prepared to play vocal parts or accompani-

ment.

1. The participant selects one of the hymns below and prepares it in advance. It is played as it is written inthe 1991 edition of The Baptist Hymnal. Play the first stanza of the selected hymn, play a short appropri-ate modulation to the new key, then play the first stanza again maintaining the four-part harmony in thenew key. Be prepared to modulate each hymn up and down. The judges will determine which of thetwo you will play. Alternate numbers for 2008 Baptist Hymnal are in parentheses.

2. DO NOT WRITE OUT THE NEW HYMN AND BRING IT TO PLAY AT THE FESTIVAL. This proficiency is notto test your notation ability. It is to evaluate your ability to modulate and transpose. You must play amodulation to the new key.
