Mississippi State picked up a road win in week one as the Bulldogs emerged victorious over the home standing Golden Eagles of Southern Miss. The Bulldogs held the Eagles to 102 yards on the ground and limited the hosts to just one offen-sive touchdown. Linebacker Richie Brown was the leading tackler in the game with 11 personnel stops.

“It went pretty good,” Brown said of his team’s first night in the new defense. “I think some young guys learned a lot of things. We had some simple mistakes here and there that would should have capitalized on here or there, but all in all it was a good night.”

A key point in the ball game took place just before the first half ended. Southern Miss was set up with a first and goal to go at the Missis-sippi State three yard line. The four ensuing plays netted just two yards as the Bulldogs stood tall on their own goal line.

“That goal line stand was big for our defense,” Brown said. “They were trying to run it down our throats and we were trying to send a message not to do that. I think the whole defense did good on that. Everybody was swarming to the ball.

“I got in on that a little bit. They were running right down my ‘A’ gap.”

The Bulldog defense spent most of the first half on the field as the Mississippi State offense was limited to just seven offensive snaps. After a Bulldog score on their first pos-session after intermission, Brown made a play that led to a reversal of fortunes.

“I was just running to the ball like usual and the ball just popped up,” Brown said of his interception. “Great things happen when you run to the ball. We had great coverage on their receivers and I just got a nice bounce. You have to be able to create those turnovers.”

The Bulldogs scored on three of their third quarter possessions, which provide some distance between them and the Golden Eagles. Southern Miss pulled out all of the stops including a pair of onsides kicks and gadget plays.

Brown reports that his team ex-pected the Eagles to come out ready to play hard to defend their home turf.

“We knew they were going to come out and be a better team this year,” Brown said. “We knew they had a chip on their shoulder. They

are a much better team. We weren’t surprised by that at all. We knew that they would be.”

Southern Miss struggled to establish a ground game, but found some success through the air netting 311 passing yards. Brown admit-ted that the Eagles presented some new wrinkles that took some time to adjust to.

“They had some really good schemes going,” Brown explained. “They came with some different formations and stuff like that and some things we really hadn’t prac-ticed. That’s really not a big deal. We should have covered it.

“We had a little air here and a little bit of first game jitters. We had some little errors that we’ll get fixed.”

The trip to Hattiesburg provided Brown the chance to be closer to his hometown of Long Beach, Missis-sippi as well as a return visit to the site of some camping dates when he was searching for his college home.

“I played in a few Brett Favre 7-on-7 championships here,” Brown said. “We went undefeated here a couple of years. I like winning here. It’s fun.”

With the Bulldogs now 1-0, the stage is set for a huge ball game this week as Mississippi State hosts the Tigers of LSU in the home opener in

Former Long Beach star linebacker Richie Brown had a game-high eleven tackles and an interception in the Bulldogs’ 34-16 win over Southern Miss Saturday night.

Starkville. The Tigers saw their game on Saturday cancelled due to inclem-ent weather.

Brown does not believe that many if any conclusions can be drawn from the fact that the Bayou Bengals did not get the chance to work the kinks out against McNeese State. The ju-nior linebacker expects a hard fought Saturday night battle against the boys from Baton Rouge.

“They’re a good team and they’re going to play some good hard ball,” Brown said of the Tigers. “I am sure that they will come out aggressive and we are going to play our best.”

The Tigers are a much different animal when it comes to offensive play calling. Les Miles likes to line up and run downhill, while Southern Miss like to spread the ball around more on the perimeter. Brown reports that the change in opponent’s offensive philosophy will provide a unique set of challenges.

“It’s a little bit different offense,” Brown said of LSU. “It’s running downhill. That’s how LSU is and we have to prepare for that this week. We’ll have to switch gears a little bit. There was a little bit of LSU in what (Southern Miss) did here and there, but we have to transfer for more of a downhill running mindset this week.”

7MISSISSIPPI GRIDIRON 2015

The season opener between Ole Miss and UT-Martin was scheduled as a one-sided win and that’s exactly how it played out with the Rebels manhandling the Skyhawks 76-3 at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.

Everything - almost - about Saturday’s season opener against UT-Martin went according to plan, at least on the field.

The Rebs, as expected, mauled the Skyhawks, 76-3, with just about everything clocking the Rebs’ way.

(We’ll get to the off-the-field ‘stuff’ in a bit.)

Take a lot of the following with a grain of salt - with al due respect to them, the Skyhawks were hard to get a true measurement from.

* Everyone, literally, had their eyes on the quarterbacks since there has been an eight-month battle for the starting nod. Junior Chad Kelly won the honor to start the opener and did not disappoint, throwing for 211 yards and two TDs and running for a 20 yard TD. But Ryan Buchanan and DeVante Kincade also did nice jobs, showing why the battle for the job has been, as the coaches have been saying

all along, a close one. At the same time, yours truly can see why Chad currently has the edge. Either way, from a first look perspective, QB is in pretty good hands.

* It was good to see Laquon Treadwell back in action, even though the gifted one played tentative and looked rusty, which he admitted and felt postgame. That will go away, quickly. Good to have that first game back from his horrific injury under his belt.

* From the first day of spring train-ing until the present, the Rebels have worked on improving the run game. If their dreams are to be fulfilled, they must be a better run team than they were last year. The early signs are positive that they are better on the ground. Again, we’re tempering our enthusiasm based on the opposition, but from an execution standpoint, the Rebel run game just looked crisper and better overall. 338 yards rushing is a modicum of proof.

* Individually, it was cool to see Robert Nkemdiche catch a TD pass out of the heavy set (Freeze said he called the play for Robert’s Mom, who was in attendance on a rare occasion) and to block a field goal, besides caus-ing havoc on the DL.

Laquon Treadwell caught four passes for 48 yards in his first return to the football field following last year’s season-ending injury.

LAQUON TREADWELL SEARCHING FOR RHYTHM

Ole Miss junior wide receiver Laquon Treadwell saw his first game action back from last year’s season-ending injury.

* It was great to see Carlos Davis back in action after sitting out a year with a knee injury. He has a re-ally good look, from my cheap seat, fielding punts and he certainly looks capable of making a play with his speed and courage back there.

* It was cool to see Cody Core, Markell Pack, Quincy Adeboyejo, Jaylen Walton (2), Eugene Brazley and D.K. Buford score offensive TDs and Trae Elston’s 93-yard interception return was scintillating.

* It was good see freshman LG Javon Patterson in action with his first career start. He’s going to be a special OL here and is off to a really fast start.

Now to the unexpected. . . . Rumors started circulating Thurs-

day about the school siting out Lar-emy Tunsil while some “unresolved issues” were being looked into by the NCAA. He sat out the opener, which he was not needed in, but the question that nobody can seem to answer is ‘how many more games, if any?’ The prevailing thought, also rumor, is “2-4” but nobody really knows for sure.

Fahn Cooper moved to left tackle from RT for the UT-Martin game and did a fine job, but with all respect to Fahn, he is no Tunsil, who is a top five NFL pick. It was good to see Sean

Sophomore fullback Daythan Davis was still reflecting on the open-ing weekend in Hattiesburg when the Mississippi State Bulldogs came rolling into town.

Though the Eagles came up on the losing side of the scoreboard, there are plenty of things for this team to take into the rest of the season and plenty of ways to continue to carry on that momentum.

“It was amazing to see the stadium packed and to see all the Gold,” Da-vis told GoldenEaglePride.com after Tuesday’s practice.

“We were so excited to see all that gold. After the Eagle walk everyone was as amped as could be and just ready to play.”

The Eagles lost 34-16 in a game that was closer than the score, and after all the off-season talk of an improved team Southern Miss was excited they were able to show it

against a quality opponent.“I’m a firm believer that even

though we had a loss at the beginning of the season it will only make us a better team,” Davis said.

“We are certainly learning from it. We don’t really like to hear that we played a heck of a game because we believe we could have won the game and that is the way this team really thinks. We just have to build off that and continue to grow as a team even from that loss.”

This team has a different approach coming into games this season. They have moved from hoping to win to really believing they are going to win, and it’s something that Davis said comes from continuity and belief in one another.

“The mindset is this year that we have all been together, the core of the team at least, and we know what we are doing and feel confident in our system and our coaches,” he said.

“There are no more excuses. We are going to go out and make things happen, it is not a question of if, but

Southern Miss fullback Dayton Davis provides the Golden Eagle offense with a physical presence.

GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY FOR DAVISwhen.

“After last year I feel like the mental aspect of it is really down so we just have to go out there and do it. We have the mental side locked down knowing the system.”

Davis, who had a nice catch out of the backfield for 18 yards, believes there is more of that in store for him this year.

“I think I will be more active in the offense,” he said.

“Now that we have the TE’s be-cause they don’t need me as much to stay in and block. Last year we had Triplett out there who was a pure re-ceiver and I had to block all the time.

“Now I can go out and make plays through the air because our offensive line is better and we have more who

can block and block well in the pass-ing game. We just have a whole lot more options this season.”

Southern Miss dove into Tuesday’s practice with the task of putting the emotional game Saturday behind them and focused on getting ready for Austin Peay.

“We just keep telling ourselves that we haven’t won a game yet and we have to prepare the same every game,” Davis said.

“We are going into it with the mindset that we have to work as hard as if it is any game and not worry about who the opponent is. We can talk all we want but if we don’t get it done at practice and preparation then we will not get it done on the field. This team is very focused.”

Rawlings get his first start at RT, but with all due respect to him, he’s not Fahn Cooper yet.

Bottom line, obviously, is that the Rebs need Tunsil back in the fold. And that’s a big ‘duh, Chuck.’

Also, MLB C.J. Johnson, FS C.J. Hampton and DT Breeland Speaks (for a half) were suspended and it was stat-ed those suspensions were for breaking

team rules, even though we had heard Hampton’s was also NCAA related. Either way, all three are anticipated to play next week against Fresno State.

Get Laremy back soon and all will be well with the world because other than his school-imposed suspension, all was well in the world of Ole Miss football. . .

. . . . as expected.

Bobby Hall Gets Win No. 300

Biloxi coach Bobby Hall got coaching career win No. 300 on Friday night when the Indians rallied back to beat Northshore (La.) 28-23.

Hall joins Jackson Prep coach Ricky Black and Centreville Acad-emy coach Bill Hurst as the only active coaches with 300 career wins or more.

Biloxi (2-1) hosts Gautier (2-1) on Friday.

Breland Bowl Has New Meaning

The Breland Bowl between Lake and Union will have an unfamiliar taste to it this year.

It isn’t for a region championship. For the first time in four seasons

the Hornets (3-0) and Yellow Jackets (3-0) will play for bragging rights instead of seeding going into the playoffs.

“The competiveness in us will come out before the game. But once the game starts it will be like any other game,” said Union coach Brad Breland. “There isn’t as much stress because we aren’t playing for playoff seeding so that’s enjoyable.”

Union has beaten Lake three times out of the four years. Union won last year 22-16, but Lake won the Region 5-2A championship due to point dif-ferentional.

“The expectations are still to win. Me and Brad want to beat each other as bad as we cane,” said Lake Jeff

Breland. “Someone will be unde-feated and the other won’t. The teams are 25 miles apart and the kids are developing a rivalry.”

Quarterback and Morton transfer Dylan Lingle has helped open up the Lake offense

The Hornets first string offense and defense hasn’t played a full four quarters this season.

“We are not a run heavy offense no more. Dylan has become a big time weapon for us at quarterback and we can score much more quickly than we have in the past,” Jeff Breland said. “We haven’t played a full complete game. This Friday night will the first game will have to play for complete quarters. We better come ready to play.”

Union will be playing keep away in order to try to stay in it.

TOP 10 GAMES OF THE WEEKSouth Panola rolls into Madison Central to test a Jaguar team that has impressed so far this season. 1. South Panola (2-0) at Madi-son Central (3-0), Thursday

Don’t call it David vs. Goliath just yet. Madison Central has been one of the most impressive teams through the first weeks of the season. The Jaguar defense, led by Will Brooks and Tiki McField, must find ways to slow down the heavy Tiger rushing attack. Jack Walker has been solid under center.

South Panola is coming off a bye week and will look to open up more of its offense with Tyler Pogue back from a knee injury. He played two weeks ago in the win over Meridian. Defending champs in a close one in The Jungle. Pick: South Panola 27-24

2. Oxford (1-2) at Lafayette (3-0)

Things have gone quite opposite of last year heading into this years Crosstown Classic. The Chargers have dropped two in a row to Starkville and Madison Central, while the Commodores have cruised along. Oxford looks to get things going again behind quarterback and Tulane commit Jack Abraham and wide receiver DK Metcalf. Abraham passed for a whopping 479 yards and three TD’s last week.

Lafayette has flown under the radar most of the season but the Commodores are absolutely loaded. They will look to keep Tyrell Price and the heavy rushing attack rolling. Price rushed for nearly 300 yards in last week’s very impressive win over Grenada. Commodores stun the Chargers. Pick: Lafayette 30-27

3. Tupelo (2-1) at Brandon (2-1)This will be the first time ever the

Golden Wave and Bulldogs will meet on the gridiron. After its opening week loss to Clarksdale, Tupelo has won two straight and quarterback Daniel Bristow has been nothing short of lights out.

Brandon is coming off a big emo-tional overtime win against Clinton last week behind back-up quarterback Bo Whatley, but expect regular starter Brady Anderson to play this week. Dogs at home.Pick: Brandon 21-20

4. Bassfield (3-0) at Collins (2-1)The defending Class 3A and Class

2A state champions will meet in the

HIGH SCHOOL

biggest “small school” game of the regular season. The Tigers knocked off the Yellowjackets last year and snapped Bassfield’s 26-game winning streak, so expect Bassfield to have revenge on their minds. The Yellow-jackets heavy rushing attack is led by Timothy Arnold and Ron Thompson.

Detric Hawthorn is pacing the high-potent Collins passing attack. Calvin Keys had 176 yards receiving in last week’s loss to Hattiesburg. Bassfield gets revenge.

Pick: Bassfield 32-24

5. Pascagoula (2-1) at George County (3-0)

Two former Region 4-5A rivals will go head to head in Lucedale. George County has been one of the surprises through the first three weeks and is led by dual-threat quarterback LaRaymond Spivery and running back Khalil Burns.

Pascagoula is coming off a big win over D’Iberville and is led by quarter-back Granland Torjusen. Panthers get it done on the road.Pick: Pascagoula 25-19

6. Philadelphia (2-1) at Louis-ville (2-1)

Two heavyweights and traditional powerhouses will go head to head.

The Tornadoes are coming off a loss to rival Neshoba Central, while the Wildcats bounced back after their whipping to West Point and went on the road and beat a good Kemper County squad.

Sophomore Courtney Smith has rushed for five touchdowns to lead the heavy Philadelphia rushing at-tack, Louisville is led by Keon Cole-man. Cats at home.Pick: Louisville 20-17

7. East Webster (3-0) at Hous-ton (3-0)

The Hilltoppers and Wolverines have lived up to expectations so far this season. Expect a lot of rush-ing attempts in this one. Do-it-all quarterback Jack Wilson leads a East Webster offense that is averag-ing 233.5 yards rushing. Houston is averaging 159.3 yards on the ground and is led by sophomores Quenton May and Urriah Shepherd.

Defensive back Denver McQuary is still two interceptions away from breaking state record held by Steve McNair. Hilltoppers at home.Pick: Houston 30-20

8. Calhoun City (2-1) at Aber-deen (2-1)

Two heavyweights that look to make deep runs in the playoffs will go head to head in Aberdeen. Quar-terback Tramonte Prather has thrown for 417 yards and three touchdowns and Memphis commit Jerrick Orr has been Prather’s main target for the Bulldogs.

Calhoun City is led by Brieton Sykes. Sykes led the team to the state championship game last season and looks to do the same this year, but

Aberdeen is playing well. Aberdeen in a close one at home.Pick: Aberdeen 21-19

9. Union (3-0) at Lake (3-0)The Breland Bowl will have a

unfamiliar taste to it this season with the teams competing in different divisions. Unlike the last few seasons this game will not decide a region championship.

Jay Jimison leads the heavy rush-ing attack for the Hornets, while the Yellow Jackets are led by Austin Hood. Lake gets revenge at home.Pick: Lake 22-18

10. Greenville St. Joseph (3-0) at Indianola Academy (3-0)

So far so good for Greenville St. Joe in its first three games as a mem-ber of the MAIS, but the Irish will get its first test of the season when hits the road to face the Colonels. Quar-terback Brice Johnson has thrown for nine touchdowns and has rushed for four more. Indianola Academy is led by Taylor Roberson. Irish pass road test.Pick: Greenville St. Joe 35-25

Madison Central senior tight end Grayson Gunter is committed to the University of Arkansas and is a big reason the Jaguars are 3-0.
