Chad Kelly is the starting quarter-back for the Ole Miss Rebels.

There is simply no more denying it after Saturday.

The junior college transfer made everything look easy, completing 20-of-25 passes for 346 yards and four touchdowns in the Rebels’ 73-21 blitzing of Fresno State. Kelly also added a 4-yard touchdown run in the rout.

If Kelly’s performance on the field Saturday didn’t end his months-long quarterback battle with Ryan Bu-chanan and DeVante Kincade, Hugh Freeze did following the game.

“He is the starter,” Freeze said of Kelly. “I said yesterday, I guess it was with the ESPN crew that did the game, that it is his to lose, and he cer-tainly has done nothing to put himself out of it. So he’s the starter. I expect that to continue, but I like Ryan and DeVante also.”

Buchanan and Kincade both played Saturday, but not until Kelly had led Ole Miss to a 28-0 first-quarter lead with touchdown passes of 14 yards to Cody Core, and end zone strikes of 16 and 50 yards to Quincy Adeboyejo. The Rebels other score in the opening period came on a 4-yard run from Kelly, who could do no wrong against the visitors from California.

“I thought we did good,” said Kelly. “There were some things we could do better. I could have made better reads out there. I thought we definitely did good. Again, scoring 70 points is a great day.”

Kelly dodged the accolades aimed at his own play, instead compliment-ing his teammates following the game.

“The defense did a great job. My offensive line did a tremendous job. The wide receivers got open. The running backs ran hard. I’m just excited about what next week has to offer,” Kelly said.

Ole Miss has scored 70 points in two consecutive games to open the season. A much tougher opponent, Alabama, looms ahead next Saturday night.

“I think we’re doing good. We just have to make sure that we’re hitting on all cylinders every play, and don’t take anything for granted...” he said.

“I just got to keep on working in the film room, just making sure I’m making the right read every single play, because one play could decide the whole game. As an offense, I think we’ve just got to keep on roll-ing, keep doing what we’re doing and listen.”

The Rebels have played the first two games of the season without All-American left tackle Laremy Tunsil, who is suspended amid an ongoing NCAA inquiry. It is still unknown whether or not Tunsil will play next week at Alabama. Kelly was asked how he feels about his offensive line minus Tunsil.

“I haven’t seen a sack yet. I

After a stellar opening two weeks, Chad Kelly has Ole Miss at 2-0 and ranked 11th in the country heading into a huge game in Tuscaloosa against Alabama.

CHAD KELLY SHINES, READY FOR BAMA

Chad Kelly is ranked #1 in the country among Division 1 quarter-backs in total QBR. He’s thrown six touchdowns with one pick.

7MISSISSIPPI GRIDIRON 2015

On Saturday night as the hour crept close to midnight, we learned that Mississippi State isn’t invincible at Davis Wade Stadium. We were also reminded that one half of good play isn’t always enough in the rugged SEC Western Division.

We learned that this group of Bulldogs won’t lie down. Time will tell but we’ve also learned in previous seasons that winning or losing the SEC opener can dictate how the rest of the season plays out.

This time next week the Bulldogs will have concluded their contest against Northwestern (La.) State. And we learned after Saturday night that Mississippi State’s next two road games will hold a great weight on which direction the 2015 season follows.

OFFENSE To be honest, some things are hard

to figure out - or learn - when it comes to Mississippi State’s rhythm on of-fense. Yes, the running game has not been productive and we’ve learned that for two weeks straight. But the team’s smallest player - Brandon Hol-loway - is finding running room and

getting lanes from the offensive line.We learned, too, regarding the run

game that some of those lanes are not being taken. Whether that’s by design or not, we still have not fully understood that situation. What we’re referring to is the lack of running this season so far by Dak Prescott.

Against LSU on Saturday night Prescott had several opportunities to tuck the ball and gain good yardage. But he opted to stay in the pocket. Are we learning that Mississippi State wants Prescott to be a pro-style quar-terback? Time will tell.

We learned that Mississippi State’s offensive line is still a work in prog-ress. The penalties are low up front but not the production off the edge.

We learned that the tight end posi-tion is not as weak as most predicted entering the season. Gus Walley and Justin Johnson have both fared well.

We learned that De’Runnya Wilson plays his best when the moment is bigger and Fred Ross will be a big part of the offense (and possibly even in the return game). But we learned that more guys still have to get involved.

DEFENSE We learned that Mississippi State’s

defensive line is solid and can rise to the occasion as they did in the second

Mississippi State came up short against LSU Saturday. This is what we found out about the Bulldogs and what to expect moving forward.

WHAT WE LEARNED - LSU EDITION

Mississippi State defensive end A. J. Jefferson has been a force early this season on the Bulldog defensive line.

half against LSU. Sometimes in the SEC you tip your hat to the other team and that was the case Saturday regard-ing Leonard Fournette. But when push came to shove, the defensive line brought it.

We learned that Chris Jones can deliver a pop and create havoc in the middle from start to finish. And we learned that Nick James is playing his best football in his college career. We continued to learn that A.J. Jefferson is the same beast we saw in the spring.

We also learned that Mississippi State’s linebackers can step up when needed and the likes of Richie Brown and Beniquez Brown made several plays in the second half.

We learned that holes remain in the secondary and that missed tackles continue to remain a problem at times. But we learned (or were reminded) that senior corner Will Redmond is becoming a sure tackler on the edge.

We learned that Cory Thomas and Braxton Hoyett got their first career snaps on the defensive line and those reps will have to increase to keep the likes of Jones, James and Nelson Adams (another unsung hero of the Dline) fresh in November.

SPECIAL TEAMS We are starting to learn that Fred

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- South-ern Miss quarterback Nick Mullens threw three touchdowns and ran for another as the Golden Eagles cap-tured their first victory of the season in a 52-6 decision over Austin Peay here Saturday afternoon at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium.

Mullens finished with 275 passing yards on a 22-of-40 throws, but got the Golden Eagles on the board at the 5:36 mark of the opening quarter with his legs on a 2-yard scoring run.

The Governors (0-2) answered with their only points of the contest just over two minutes later as Trey Taylor hit Rashaan Coleman on a 44-yard strike. The extra point was missed and that was the closest

Austin Peay got the rest of the contest as Southern Miss limited the visitors to just 189 total yards and 2-for-16 on third down conversions. The Governors did not convert their first third-down conversion until the final quarter.

Ito Smith, who rushed for a game-best 135 yards on 10 carries, extended the Golden Eagle lead in the second period on a 75-yard score down the right sideline for his longest rush of his career. It was his third 100-yard rushing performance for the sophomore running back.

D.J. Thompson and Korey Rob-ertson each then caught touchdown passes from Mullens from 3- and 9-yards, respectively to give the Golden Eagles a 28-6 advantage at halftime.

The Golden Eagles added three more touchdowns in the third quarter

as Smith added his second score to start the third quarter, this time on a 49-yard pass from Mullens with 9:23 left. Senior Justice Hayes added a one-yard scoring run and Kalan Reed intercepted a pass and returned it 76 yards for his second career pick for a touchdown.

Parker Shaunfield added a 28-yard field goal to complete the scoring in the fourth quarter.

Southern Miss tallied 514 total yards including 239 yards on the ground.

The Golden Eagles go on the road for the first time this season next week when they travel to Texas State in a 6 p.m., contest Saturday. The game will be broadcast on ESPN 3.

Ross has good leverage on punt returns and can be a threat. We learned that Holloway is also a good option on kickoff returns and he was oh-so-close to breaking another long return.

We learned that Logan Cooke and Devon Bell will be a platoon deal on kickoffs and punt, depending on the situation with punts. We learned that Bell will be Mullen’s kicker on any

field goals outside of 50 yards. We didn’t learn what it’s like to

see Westin Graves miss a field goal this year. He is 4-of-4 on field goals and showed good distance on the 43-yarder he made. That makes you wonder who would’ve kicked that potential game-winner if not for the delay of game penalty. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to learn that.

First-year head coaches usually need time to turn a program around.

That hasn’t been the case for Toby Collums and Northwest Rankin.

The Cougars (4-0) are off to their best start since 2011 and will wel-come crosstown rival Brandon (3-1) into Cougar Stadium on Friday.

“The kids are just playing real hard and with a lot of heart and that has been the difference,” said Collums who spent the last four years as the head coach at Itawamba AHS.

“One thing that has been a good thing for us is the offensive line has played well and we haven’t had many injuries.”

A big surprise has been the play of quarterback Braden Smith, who has passed for 594 yards with four touchdowns and also has 286 rushing yards and four more scores.

“Braden has done a really good job of just managing the game. He has played four really good games and we are hoping for some more as the year goes on,” Collums said. “He’s done well with not turning the ball over and that is absolutely huge for us.”

Brandon coach Tyler Peterson, who is the former coach at NWR, is very well aware of Smith.

“We have got to keep an eye on him at all times and try to limit him on making plays,” he said. “There is

NOTEBOOKNorthwest Rankin makes their first appearance of the year in the Top 10, checking in at No. 10.

no weakness in his game and he is playing very well right now.”

Not only was 2011 the last time the Cougars started the season unde-feated, it was also the last time they beat Brandon.

This will be the first time since 2010 that the Bulldogs and Cougars come into the annual Rankin County Super Bowl with winning records.

“Unlike previous years both teams are coming in playing at high levels,” Peterson said. “That is a good thing. It is going to be a great atmosphere.”

“We won’t have a problem moti-vating the guys that’s for sure,” Col-lums said. “We don’t need to come out too jacked and make mistakes.”

As for Brandon, the Bulldogs have already been bit by the injury bug. In an overtime game against Clinton, Brandon had six starters out. It didn’t seem to make much of a difference as the Bulldogs went on to win the game 29-28.

“Yes we have had some guys out hurt, but the younger guys have really stepped up,” Peterson said. “The effort they have played with has been tremendous and showing us coaches what they are made of.”

Quarterback Brady Anderson is back after suffering a shoulder injury against Madison Central.

He and backup Bo Whatley spilt snaps last week against Tupelo and will again this week.

MRA Focused On The Present

One thing Madison-Ridgeland Academy coach Herbert Davis reminds his team about is to not to think about the past.

That will definitely be the case this week for MRA (3-1) who will make the short trip to Flowood to face Jackson Prep (4-0) in the all-Patriot matchup and a rematch of the MAIS Academy AAA, Division I state championship game.

“For us we just have to be physi-cal,” Davis said. “Prep always has a great defense. They may have lost a few players, but to me they are no different than have been in previous years.”

If there is one advantage MRA does have it is experience led by do-it-all athlete Karter Bounds.

Stats on Bounds for this year haven’t been updated. In 2014, he had 695 yards rushing with eight touchdowns and had 623 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.

“Karter is the type of guy we want to get the ball to in space,” Davis said. “We have game packages to find different ways to get him the ball for every game. He can make a big play at any time.”

The last time MRA beat Jackson Prep was in 2010 when they went to Prep and won 14-7 in the playoffs.

One thing Jackson Prep coach Ricky Black is very aware of are the other playmakers for MRA as in Clint Moses and Andrew Berry.

“Biggest thing for us is we’ve got to stop their running game. Our defense has been doing great about getting big stops and we will need that this week,” he said. “Our offense has had less than 40 plays in each of the last two games just based upon our defense giving us short field.”

Prep is still looking for consistent play at quarterback. Chance Lover-tich has started under center the last two games.

One thing that hasn’t been an issue is the run game. Jacob Crawley and Jerrion Ealy have started a two-head-ed monster in the backfield for Prep.

Crawley has rushed for 416 yards with eight touchdowns, while Ealy has 250 yards with three touchdowns.

“We have got to stop the run for us to have a chance,” Davis said. “One thing Prep does well in is short yard-age packages. They have two good tailbacks and lately we have made some mistakes and we definitely can’t afford to do that this week.”

Another thing to keep an eye on is the play of MRA freshmen quarter-back Hunter Hulsey.

Hulsey took over in Week 2 against St. Martin after starter Hayden Davis suffered a torn ACL in

the first quarter. “He has done well so far. He’s

making freshmen mistakes, but we are getting all we can ask for out of him,” Davis said. “Getting better every week and he is understanding the game well.”
