not Boolean based
• “fuzzy” searching, “auto complete” as patrons type searches
• Advanced search for phrases, formats, include or exclude search terms
• Search targets vs. search limits
Targets
Limits
Faceted Searching
• Patrons limit searches using facets, which work as filters
• Might want to limit how many facets appear as options in the search results screen.
• Facets are only as good as our cataloging records.
• Known issue-problems with facets displaying from ALL MSC libraries instead of just your location
Format• From the 007 tag in the MARC record
• If there is no 007, it comes from position 06 in the leader in the MARC record
Author• From the 1XX main entry fields or the 7XX added entry fields in the MARC record
Library• From the call library in the Item record
Shelf Location• From Home Location in the Item record• Potentially confusing to
patrons• Consider suppressing or
moving to the bottom of the facets
Item Type• From Item Type in the Item record• Corresponds to “material
type” column in item details display
• Some libraries have relabeled to “Material Type”
• Consider suppressing as it describes circ rules and may be more general than Format
Subject• From the 6XX fields in the MARC record
Publication Date• Comes from the 008• Continuing resources behave differently
• Some displays come from the 260/264
Material Type• From Item Cat 1
• Consider suppressing as it duplicates information found in Format and Subject headings
Department or Audience• From Item Cat 2
Genre or Subject• From Item Cat 3
• Consider suppressing as it duplicates info found in Subject headings
Programs and Ratings• From Item Cat 4
• AR/Reading Counts/Lexile info and Movie Ratings can be found in this Item Cat
• Consider suppressing due to inconsistent usage
Fund or Origin (aka How Acquired)• From Item Cat 5
• Consider suppressing as this is predominantly used by staff and is not a patron concern
Award Notes• From tag 586 in the MARC record
Language• From the 008 in the MARC record
• If no 008, then comes from the 041
