In 1819, Missouri requested statehood

Threatened to upset the slave state balance Until 1818 there were 10 slave states and 10 free

states Illinois was admitted in 1818 as a free state Southerners expected Missouri to enter as a slave state

Tallmadge Amendment Created by NY Congressman James Tallmadge Changed Missouri’s statehood bill

Missouri would be admitted as a slave state, but would gradually free all of its slaves Southerners blocked the bill’s passage

While Missouri’s fate was being debated,

Alabama was given statehood as a slave state This again balanced the states at 11 free and 11 slave

Southern states accused Northerners of trying to end slavery

Northerners accused southerners of trying to extend slavery into the west

Both sides threatened civil war Prelude to what was to come

Maine would be admitted as a free state and

Missouri would be admitted as a slave state This would keep the numbers in balance

Louisiana Territory Divided at the 36º30’ north latitude

North of the line, (except Missouri) slavery was banned South of the line, slavery was legal

A temporary fix that would later lead to conflict
