from the Editor

I recently saw a graph that purported to represent the end of the world.

There were three bars, the fi rst labeled “number of world end warnings in the last century.” The bar soared up the graph into the zillions. The next bar was labeled, “number of people who believed the warnings.” That bar reached to the billions. The third bar was labeled “number of times the world ended.” Of course it rested at zero. The caption under the entire graph was “But this time….this time they are more sure than ever!”

This reminded me that my attitude about the end of the world needed a tune up. I have preached for years that Christians ought to live as if the world could end this after-noon. We preachers do that because it could! The Bible is clear that God can pretty well do anything He wants. He has certainly bound Himself by rules that He has established, but nowhere has He said that he is waiting on anyone or anything before he says “the end.” I am glad that is up to Him and not us.

But while I have no doubt that He really is coming sooner or later, this graph refl ects what most of the world thinks. Their idea is that if we can keep those with nuclear bombs from blowing us all up, the world will keep on spinning ad infi nitum. Their idea

of the future extends on into the distance with no foreseeable end. They plan and work and save and live as if this is all there is. Their concept of a soon coming King is non-existent. As far as they are concerned, those of us who preach that the end is near are crazy. We might as well be walking the side-

walks with signs proclaim the fact. They have become so entrenched in this world they do not understand that there is another one coming.

Aren’t you glad you know the truth! I know, we don’t all agree on the method or the timing or the circumstances that will surround His anticipated appearance. We have argued for years about the details, but none of us are ques-tioning whether He will come. It

always amuses me when someone not familiar with Free Will Baptists asks what our offi cial position is on eschatology. With a smile I usually say we are in favor of His coming. I hasten to explain that while half of our brethren may be confused about the theology of the event, we are all in agreement that He

is coming and that we must be prepared when He does.

Of course, God has a habit of making the whole question moot. I recently attended the fu-neral of a man who was saved at age 78 and died at age 80. It was great to get to hear the preacher tell his family where he was. He doesn’t have to worry about whether there will be a rapture of not. If God wants to bring him back to earth for a thousand years, I am sure he will be glad to come. He has escaped the trouble and woe we face daily. His concept of eternity is perfect now.

I said earlier that my attitude about the end of the world

needed a tune up. I am prone to get too concerned about the politi-cal and fi nancial state of this world. I can get excited talking about what the government is doing wrong. I feels good to be reminded that it is all futile pursuit. None of it is eternal. No matter what the world says or thinks, He’s coming and I’m ready. Until He gets here my job is to keep on telling this confused world the truth about what really is about to happen. Graph or no graph.

Get Ready, Here He Comes!Get Ready, Here He Comes!

by Frank WebsterMissouri Missions

Director

Although most of the news for the past two years has been about economic de-cline, 2009 has had some good news too.

To start with, there were six groups, which I know of, that went on short-term mission trips. We also had several from our state take part in E-Team or the College Missions Program. This, of course, allowed the high school or college-age groups to go on international mission trips with our Internation-al Missions Department in Nash-ville. There were several through-out the state of Missouri that made fi rst time commitments in 2009 to begin supporting Free Will Baptist missions. Some more began pray-ing regularly for missionaries and that the Gospel would spread further through their efforts.

The good news continues for 2009. The congregation in Greensburg, PA experienced a move from a hotel to a building. Also, they bap-tized fi ve while almost doubling in number through the year. Nate Altom and Tom Jones can’t wait to see what good things the Lord has in store for 2010!

If you begin to think that the Gospel is falling only on deaf ears in our country, then just give Jeff Cates a call and let him tell you about what is happening in Canyon, Texas. He won’t have any bad news to discuss. The same can be said of Scott Cheatham

in Thornton, Colorado. When I give Scott a call, he wants to share his worry of having to go to two services.

Then we can take a look at our Missouri State Mission Projects. In 2009, they saw at least 35 come to know the Lord through their outreaches. Let me explain the “at least.” The times we are in have led to many having to move from one place to another so the “at least” is due to some commitments that were made, but they were unable to stay in the area for discipleship afterwards. So instead of touting numbers of over 60, the fact is that we just don’t know for certain how many more than 35. Isn’t that great! We praise the Lord for them all and pray for their continued spiritual growth wherever the wandering ones are. We do know that some of the wandering ones are in Mexico and Guatemala, still involved in protestant churches and praying that a Free Will Baptist pastor will make his way to them in the future.

As I continue to point out the good things that happened in 2009, I want to show the good side of the fi nancial crisis. Is there a good side to fi nancial crisis? Well, I always feel that when a crisis comes, God has the answer to it within reach. We see that throughout the Bible. Abraham and Isaac had a ram that was walking up the hill on the other side of the situation. On more than one occasion, all the disciples had to do was to go fi shing to fi x their problems. And we all know that resurrection was a big reason behind crucifi xion. God always has a fi x; we just have to have the faith to see it.

With all the fi nancial problems you and I have been hearing about in missions, I believe that our Show Me Plan being changed and put in place at this time is our answer to this crisis. Because today when a church or individual gives to the Show Me Plan, the money goes to help all three mission areas.

Sixty percent of your gift will go to International Missions, and that, along with the World Mission Offering and the GO10 event, will greatly help in their money crisis.

Thirty percent will go into Missouri State Missions. We closed 2009 with a bit of a fi nancial crisis of our own, so increased Show Me giving would greatly help us too.

Then the remaining ten percent is split between our three national missionaries to give them a small boost in their time of need.

There were some great things that happened in 2009. Several were saved, many different witnesses went out from many areas of Free Will Baptist missions and the Show Me Plan was designed prior to a crisis to help the crisis. So I say that even in the midst of continually bad news, we can all see that God is always God, all the time and in any time.

Bailey Bulletin from Tokyo January 2010

Greetings from the Land of the Rising Son!

Much has been happening at Kamifukuoka Christ Church since our June E Teamactivities. In July, our son Benjamin returned to do research for his Master’sdegree in Teaching English as a Second Language (TOESL), and was involved inleading English and Bible classes at the Iriso and Kamifukuoka Churches until hisreturn to the States in December.

In October we hosted the 55th Anniversary Celebration of Japan Free Will Baptist Missions. Veteran missionary Fred Hersey andhis wife June returned to speak to us, and Fred’s son, Paul, was the featured pianist at a special concert to celebrate the 40th

Anniversary of Iriso Church the day before the Association meeting.

We’ve had several guest speakers in the past few months: Dale Bishop and his wife, Sandra, visited before beginning Statesideassignment in August, Kenji Hosokawa, Hokkaido Pastor Hirabuki, new missionaries Rusty and Brenda Carney, along with Joshand Alicia Crow, former Missionary Affiliate Jon McNay and Brandon Reiersion from Hillsdale College. We have been blessed tohear so many speak at our young church.

We held a special Christmas Outreach Party for Children at our local train station on December 12th, with 34 people from ourcommunity attending. We are grateful for the opportunity tobecome better known in our neighborhood and using this timeof year to spread the Gospel to these unsaved children andparents.

Our church rejoiced in witnessinga baptism on December 27th.Tatsuya M. (who’s wife Kimberlyis originally from the GenerationsChurch in Joplin) was baptized byKen the last Sunday of 2009. What a wonderful sight to see this young man dedicate himself tofollowing Christ’s example! Please pray for Tatsuya and Kimberly in their growth as youngChristians. Please keep our group at Kamifukuoka Christ Church in your prayers in 2010; pray forspiritual growth among our members, more to fill leadership positions and for us as we ministerto the flock God has given us. Pray for the salvation of the unsaved connected to our church.

Here to serve Him in Japan, Ken and Judy Bailey

Antioch, TN—The Board of Free Will Baptist International Mis-sions met December 9-10, 2009, in the Antioch, TN, offi ces. All board members were present: Danny Wil-liams, Randy Wilson, Tom McCul-lough, Paul Creech, Nelson Hend-erson, Sherwood Lee, Jeff Manning, Rob Morgan, and Jerry Norris.

Financial Crisis

The board reviewed fi nances and an analysis of those numbers. As a result of four months of sig-nifi cant giving shortfalls and two years of brutal currency exchange rates, the Mission is facing a dire fi nancial situation. Donor income for the months of August through November fell well below budget and income goals. As of Novem-ber, year-to-date receipts are more than 8% below 2008 receipts. In addition to the income shortfall, we have fought a valiant two-year battle with the ongoing devalua-tion of the U.S. dollar against other major world currencies. Mission donations are received in dollars, but most spending is in Euros, yen, rupees, and other currencies that continue to escalate against our currency, infl ating ongoing “fi xed” expenses.

Missionaries and stateside staff cut expenses, spending much less than budgeted amounts to lessen the impact of currency exchange rates. Yet, over the last two years cur-rency exchange rates infl ated the amount of money needed to oper-ate overseas to more than $630,000 additional U.S. dollars. The Mission was holding its own in the face of the recession and these drastically increased exchange rates, however

the unparalleled drop in donor income has pushed the Mission to take unprecedented action to avoid compromising the fi nancial integrity of the Mission. Even though spend-ing across the Mission has been held in check (more than $250,000 below 2008), the Mission is likely to suffer a signifi cant net asset loss for 2009.

Stateside Staff Reductions

The board approved a budget of $7.2 million for 2010, well below the $8.5 million initial framework budget approved in April and adopted by the National Associa-tion in July. To cut the budget to this degree, painful spending reductions were necessary. While nearly all spending areas were reduced, the following specifi c and extremely dif-fi cult stateside personnel decisions were made

The position of communications project coordinator will be elimi-nated for 2010. Elizabeth Willhite, who has resigned to pursue another career, fi lled this full-time role. She will not be replaced.

IMpulse and other video programs will be suspended. This decision terminates our contract relation-ship with Brian Ellison, our video producer, in March.

The part-time position of video assistant will also be eliminated for 2010. Victor Albright served in this role.

The director of member care posi-tion held by Dr. Neil Gilliland will be eliminated as a full-time staff role beginning in January. To continue serving the needs of our missionary

family, the Mission will enter into a contract with Dr. Gilliland to pro-vide some services as a consultant.

Salary and Benefi t Cutbacks

In addition to the specifi c positions eliminated, all IM employees have been affected by the following ad-ditional tough decisions:

All IM personnel, both stateside and fi eld-side, will experience a 5% reduction of their base salaries in 2010. The board froze salaries and issued no raises in 2009.

For the second year, retirement contributions for all personnel (home offi ce and fi eld) will be reduced from 5% to 3% of base sal-ary. This is the minimum required by the Board of Retirement to maintain an active account status and retain the life insurance provi-sion.

75th Anniversary Celebration Scaled Back

The fi nancial crisis facing FWBIM will also affect plans for the cel-ebration of the 75th anniversary of the Mission in 2010. IM recently announced the decision to cancel the missionary Gathering in Tulsa. Further painful decisions were fi nalized in the board session:

The plan for all missionaries to return to the States to participate in the celebration has been cancelled. Only those missionaries scheduled for stateside assignment will be

brought home at Mission expense in 2010.The annual Celebrate! banquet is cancelled for 2010.

The museum and gift shop planned for the National As-sociation in Oklahoma City will be pursued only if sponsorship funds underwrite the costs.

Only international guests whose travel and expenses are provided by donors, or who are paying for their own expenses, will be able to attend the celebration.

Additional Board Decisions

The board approved a revised handbook outlining policies and procedures of the Mission and personnel. The extensive changes refl ect the Mission’s newly adopted purpose statement and core values (approved at the April 2009 meeting), as well as the restructured funding system.

The board reappointed the fol-

lowing workers to their assignment locations: Dale and Sandra Bishop, Mirial Gainer, and Debbie Griffi n to Japan; Robert and Judy Bryan to France; David and Annette Aycock to Brazil; Molly Barker to Uruguay; and Clint and Lynette Morgan to Creative Access.

The board accepted the resigna-tions of Paige Autry and Cindy Hall. Previously appointed to Brazil, the young women had been unable to obtain visas and are cur-rently enjoying successful service in St. Croix, Virgin Islands.

·The board granted affi liate status to Rachel Dennis who will be sec-onded to ELIC for a two-year term.

The board received a report of the progress of the Go10 Walk for the World and commended Joe Wilson (project manager) and his volun-teer administrative partners Bill Ezell (TN) and Jim Daniels (GA). The board, particularly impressed by the website (www.go10 walk.

com), expressed amazement and excitement at the progress achieved since the walk was ap-proved in April.

The board commended Neil Gilliland for “the amazing work of ministry he has accomplished among us” and for the work he will continue to do.

“The board dealt with many heavy issues in an extremely short period of time. I speak for the whole IM leader-ship team,” stated James Forlines, general director,

“In expressing great appreciation for the board’s diligence in advance of the board meeting, as well as their thoughtful, thorough, and prayerful approach throughout the two days. Please pray for all of us as we seek to continue to work on tight budgets. Ask God to provide all our needs ac-cording to His riches in glory.”

ognized at the De Soto First Free Will Baptist Church for over fi fty years of service as a Sunday School Teacher! Mrs. Anita Ruble was presented with a plaque and fl owers and was thanked for all the time and love she has given to her Sunday school classes over the years.

When Anita’s stepfather, Henry Mur-ray, was alive, he used to be the Assist-ant Sunday School Superintendent at the De Soto Church. All the children loved him, and Anita picked up on that same love and caring for children. She and her husband, Paul, often in-vite children from their neighborhood to come to church, and many times you see them sitting beside Anita in the church pews. Anita encourages them to go to church, and cares when they are missing. When her Sunday school class is low in numbers, she is look-ing for ways to fi nd more children to bring in!

Paul and Anita work with Contact Food Pantry in De Soto. They often visit those in the hospitals and are faithful members of the De Soto FFWB Church. They are a great witness and example as a husband and wife as to the love they have for one another and for our Lord, Jesus Christ. They are loved and appreciated by their church family and all who know them.

How often today do we take for granted so many things that cost so much to others in years gone by? Stop for a moment & consider those Pilgrims stepping off of the Mayfl ower onto Plymouth Rock.

What we see today is Boston; tall buildings & modern highways along with historic buildings that speak to the Birth of our great Na-tion. What they saw was a wil-derness with many obsta-cles; yet, full of opportunities. The stories told of how we got to where we are today from that time period are stories of great cost and sac-rifi ces. Stories of people who had a vision of what could be someday and were willing to sweat & give what ever it took to get it done.

Camp Niangua has a similar story to tell. What you see today is not what was here sixty years ago. Back then, a man of God (Bill Reeves), brought his family to what was very much a wilderness. Believing what God could do, he started cutting down trees and moving rocks and building a place

for kids to come during the sum-mer and have ‘youth camp’ type fun and hear about Jesus.

Bro. Bill and his family were the fi rst of many in our state who gave their time & money to build what we have today. Every year since 1949, the youth camp has

had needs. Stop and think about that. Not one single year when the need for laborers and their gifts was not great. Not one single year our amazing God has not met those needs. The pictures on this page allow you to see the positive changes that have taken place at Camp Niangua over the past sixty years.

What they do not show is all the time & money given so that these changes could take place. Long hours of hard work & people us-ing their vacation time so that the young people of our state could have a place to escape for a short time and experience God in their

lives.

The history of Camp Niangua is glorious for our God and precious to the souls who have been saved. There are no years in the his-

tory of Camp Niangua of inactivity – standstills – in a rut. It is very much like revival time every

year and we are moving forward today with the same zeal that those behind us have displayed.

The great need of the camp this year lies in two main areas:

1. Workers: From teachers to sponsors and everything in between, the camp needs those who will round the kids up and bring them. If you are willing to teach or help in other areas, please contact one of the board members and let them know. Caring people

will always fi nd a place of service at Camp Niangua.

2. Finances: It’s an old need that will never change until our Lord returns. Maintenance is a high priority along with equipment. The youth camp is always expanding. Right now we’re in the process of building the new girl’s dorm. Many churches have the camp included in their yearly budget while others give special offerings each year. Whatever you do, it will not be wasted and will be greatly appreci-ated.

Pre-teen camps are: Group I: August 1-6 & Group II: July 25-30 with pre-registration being July 5th.

Bro. Augustus Herbold was ordained to be a deacon at the Thayer Free Will Baptist Church on Sunday night, January 10, 2010. Pastor Richard Robinson offi ciated the service and welcomed the visiting members from several of the area’s churches.

The congregation was led by Song Leader Dan Wrenfrow and Melinda Denton presented the special music. Bro. August’s former pastor, Bro. James Hamlett, from the Sunnyvale Church, in Malden, MO, preached a very stirring message from Acts 6: 1-7 on the duties and obligations of a deacon. Pastor Richard Robinson gave the qualifi cations for a deacon and his wife from I Timothy 3 :8-16. Prayer was led by Bro. Ed Taylor.

The Chairman of the Cave Springs Association’s Ordination Council, Bro. Dennis McGinley, spoke of the Council’s meeting with Bro. August. The Council found him “highly qualifi ed” for the offi ce of deacon. The other members of the Council present were Bro. Darrell Mitchell, Bro. John Bar-ton and Bro. Ralph Douglas. The Council and all of the ordained present gathered at the altar for the laying on of hands and prayer for Bro. August and his wife Sis. Dorothy. The prayer was led by Bro. Darrell Mitchell. Bro. Dennis McGinley presented a Certifi cate of Ordination to Bro. August Herbold on behalf of the Council.

Bro. August spoke a few words of thanks and accepted the challenge of the offi ce of deacon. He asked for the help and prayers of the church. The closing prayer was offered by Bro. Ralph Douglas. A fellowship followed with many saying that it was the best ordination service they had attended.

COUNTRY CHAPLAINCOUNTRY CHAPLAINTwenty BelowBy J. Mark Vandivort

The thermometer plunged to 20-below zero, present-ing a challenge which my boss, Zeke, had planned and prepared for by building a plastic tent over our construction job site. This site had a fuel oil heater equipped with a powerful blower. Our crew was building concrete block walls for a new, custom-built house.

Zeke had piled sand for the mortar over a metal tube, a culvert, which had been packed full of fi rewood. A fi re was then started at one end of the tube. In a similar way, a 55-gallon water barrel was propped up on concrete blocks, and a wood fi re was built under it. The water contained a weak solution of calcium chlo-ride, which helped prevent the mortar from freezing before it properly cured. (Had the mortar frozen, the walls of the house would not have been strong.)

My job was mixing the mortar, carrying concrete blocks to the block-layers (masons), and keeping the fi res burning. Yes, it was extremely cold, but the chal-lenge was exciting!

During this time, my wife and I were living in New Hampshire’s White Mountains where I served as bi-vocational pastor of a small church.

Zeke was a native of the area. And he knew the steps to take, and necessary preparations for keeping his small crew working.

Likewise, planning and preparation must be made in moral and spiritual matters. The Apostle Paul wrote, “…take thought for what is honest and proper and noble—aiming to be above reproach—in the sight of every one” (Romans 12:17, Amplifi ed Bible).

If a young man plans to date a girl, the Bible can pro-vide him guidance for making provisions to protect her purity and integrity—which may take some planning and preparation ahead of time. “Run from anything that gives you the evil thoughts that young men often have, but stay close to anything that makes you want to do right….” (2 Timothy 2:22a, Living Bible).

Should an IRS auditor decide to audit your annual tax report, receipts for your deductions will be requested. Plan and prepare ahead of time.

Being a member of Zeke’s construction crew helped to prepare me for many tough and challenging experi-ences later in life.

The Apostle Paul wrote that followers of Jesus Christ can expect to face troubles, sufferings, pressures, and hardships. Endurance of such experiences helps produce character. Through it all, you can anticipate an outpouring of God’s love through His Holy Spirit, Who brings abundant peace, joy, and hope of eternal salvation. Forgiveness of our sins was planned ahead of time through the pouring out of Jesus’ blood in His death on the cross (Romans 5:1-11; compare: 1 Peter chapter 1).

Like constructing concrete block walls at 20-below zero, life sometimes presents complicated circum-stances. Plan ahead and make provisions. Don’t let your mortar freeze.
