Playing ExperienceEastern Kentucky

Blake Starkey is the Head Tennis Coach for the University of Missouri. His an-

ranked team, as well as ranked singles and doubles players, and making the NCAA tournament. Another goal of his is turning a group of individuals from many different backgrounds into a true “team”.

Starkey was born in Palestine, Texas, and has been involved in tennis his entire life. He attended the John Newcombe Tennis Academy as a junior, and was a mainstay on the Texas junior circuit throughout his junior years.

He played collegiate tennis at Eastern Kentucky University under legendary coach Tom Higgins, where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

developing junior players led him back to Newk’s (Texas) where he worked with the Academy’s Junior Development and Competitive Edge program.

In 1992, he was named the Assistant Coach at the University of Maryland.

berths.

Starkey came to Columbia in 1998 and inherited one of the weakest teams in the nation. At the time, the Tigers had not won a Big 8 or Big 12 team match since 1981. Similar to what occurred at Maryland, Starkey’s Tigers have enjoyed a big turnaround and his teams have been the strongest in program history. He credits this to his teams being true “teams”.

He is pursuing 200 team wins and is the winningest tennis coach in Mizzou pro-gram history. The Tigers have become a dangerous squad posing a threat to any team in the Big 12, as well as any in the country.

His ladies have defeated every Big 12 team with the exception of Baylor. In 2003, the Tigers were unique in pulling off the NCAA trifecta - they sent an individual to the NCAA’s in singles, a doubles team to the NCAA’s, and the entire team competed for the NCAA Team Championships.

This is a difficult feat, and has only been achieved by a handful of coaches.

in Missouri program history. The Tigers reached their highest national team ranking in program history that year at No. 32 (out of 314 teams nation-ally) following their win over the Texas Longhorns.

While he has coached a doubles tandem that reached a No. 3 national ranking and won the Big 12 twice, his ultimate coaching goal is to win a Big 12 team title.

What occurs off the court is also very important to Starkey. His Tigers have

athletic teams in the conference and are one of the brightest of all sports teams at Mizzou.

The Tigers have been an Academic All-American Team for numerous years, and his players are regulars on Missouri Dean’s lists and on the Big 12 Commis-sioner’s Honor Roll. He keeps the Tigers active in numerous community service

children.

In 2009, Starkey was honored as the USTA Missouri Valley Coach of the Year. Through the USPTA, Coach Starkey is a USPTA P-1 instructor. He recently par-ticipated in a USTA High Performance program in Berkley, California this past year, and has been selected for the upcoming High Performance program in Florida. As Mizzou’s coach, Starkey is actively involved in numerous tennis efforts in Columbia, and throughout the state of Missouri.

Starkey’s wife, Julie, is the Assistant Dean for Campus Life at Columbia College. They have two children; Emily (15) and Samuel (12).

When Starkey is not on or near a tennis court, he enjoys biking, cooking, playing chess and other strategy games, spend-ing time with his kids, writing, photog-raphy and technology gadgets. Among other community organizations, he is a member of Columbia’s Northwest Rotary.

She played college tennis for Texas Christian University. Sheis arguably the best player to ever play for TCU. Besovicwas ranked as high as No. 6 in the nation her senior year, was a regular at the NCAA Tournament, and was a two time All-American for the Horned Frogs.

Upon graduation, Besovic initially accepted the assistantcoaching position at Penn State University. After a year she left Penn State to attend graduate school at Mizzou and is assists Head Coach Blake Starkey in his 13th seasonwith the Tigers.

Clearly coming from a stellar playing background, Besovic is very excited to be in Columbia for her second year, and simply wants to do whatever it takes to help the Tigers become a better team.

Missouri showed marked improvement under Head Coach Blake Starkey in 2008-09, as the Tigers improved by two victories in Big 12 play, enjoyed back-to-back weeks in the national rankings, toppled rival Kansas twice and advanced to the second round of Big 12 Tournament action.

Starkey has begun to focus recruiting in the United States and his time paid off in double during 2008-09. Adding two Florida na-tives to the roster proved to be just what Starkey and the Tigers were looking for. Freshman Jamie Mera joined the Mizzou line-up in the fall and wasted no time recording wins. Mera and sophomore

-petition of the season the ladies claimed the doubles championship, beating fellow Tigers Jessica Giuggioli and Kaitlyn Ritchie for the title at the Mizzou Invitational I.

Mizzou’s talent shined during it’s fall campaign, which consisted of four tournaments. The ladies racked up six individual bracket championships along with one doubles title over their fall season. The Tigers’ success carried over to their spring season as they kicked things off in Florida at the Johan Kriek Classic. With the ad-dition of their second Florida-native, Danielle Day, the Tigers went undefeated during their stay down south. Day also went undefeated while in her home state and continued to roll winning nine of her

Knowing to be the best you must compete with the best, Star-key lined up four opponents from the highly competitive Big Ten conference before beginning conference play. the Oklahoma Sooners since 2001, just the second victory over OU in program history. (Both wins were recorded under Coach Starkey.) The Sooners jumped out quickly taking the doubles point and took a 2-0 lead after an undefeated Ana-Maria Constantinescu recorded a victory over Weber at No. 1. But those would be the only wins going OU’s way as Missouri rallied back to take singles matches No. 2 through No. 6, and the meet, 5-2. “This is why we played such a tough pre-season schedule,” Starkey said following the win. “Everything is starting to pay off.”

Next Mizzou dropped a 4-3 heartbreaker to Oklahoma State before spending a weekend in Kansas as they faced rivals Kansas State and Kansas. The ladies beat the Wildcats in Manhattan 4-3 on Saturday before traveling to Lawrence on Sunday for a dual with the Jayhawks. Mizzou snagged the doubles point and jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead once Day took down her opponent at No. 5. The Jay-hawks tied the team score with singles wins at No. 3 and then No. 1, but it was all Missouri after that. Weber earned the match-clinching fourth point for the second consecutive meet and led Missouri to it’s second win in as many days, marking it’s third in Big 12 play.

The ladies then hosted two Texas schools, Texas Tech and Bay-lor, before traveling to the Lone Star state themselves for more conference competition against Texas A&M and Texas. Mizzou came up short in each match against the southern opponents, but not

State, Mizzou came out quickly sweeping the doubles matches and taking a 1-0 lead. The Cyclones earned two singles victories but Mera took down her opponent at No. 2 to tie the score at two. At No. 4 Marie Chartier and Day went into three sets. Chartier edged

Missouri would need both to pull off the win. Ritchie wasted no time putting her opponent to rest with a 7-6, 6-1 victory before Ayala sealed the win for the Tigers with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6. At home Missouri sported a 4-7 record, 4 of those losses determined by a 4-3 score.

With a 4-7 conference record the Tigers headed to Norman,

Missouri faced No. 9 Kansas. After taking the doubles point the Tigers quickly grabbed three singles wins to earn a 4-1 victory. In the second round of the tournament Mizzou would face No. 1 Baylor, then ranked No. 4 in the country. Baylor took a 4-0 win over Mizzou ending an exciting season for the Tigers.

Two seniors will leave but not before making their mark in pro-gram history. Giuggioli competed at the No. 1 position for most of the season demonstrating hard work and leadership for the Tigers throughout. Ayala recorded 24 wins over the 2008-09 campaign placing her tied for 13th on Mizzou’s all-time singles wins list. Mera

Great TeachingWith the Green Tennis Center’s opening in 2002, Missouri Tennis now boasts one of the nation’s elite teaching facilities for tennis.

Head Coach Blake Starkey has taken Mizzou Tennis from three consecutive winless seasons in the Big 12 to one of the nation’s more competitive programs.

Steven Stuckenschneider (pictured) is the head instructor and manager of the Green Tennis Center. Stuckenschneider is one of the top teaching instructors in the state of Missouri.

The Green Tennis Center is named after the father of the late Jerry Green, who donated $500,000 for the construction of this spectacular facility. Green died in 2007, but his impact on Tiger Athletics will live on due to his generosity and passion for collegiate sports.

Michael AldenDirector of Athletics - 12th Season - Evansville, 1980

Coming off the most success-ful season in school history, complete with Big 12 titles in

Men’s Basketball, Softball and Soccer and a second consecutive Big 12 North Division crown in Football, Mike Alden enters his 12th year as the Director of Athletics for the University of Missouri.

The 2008 NACDA Athletics Director of the Year has developed into one of the nation’s most respected administrators during his time in Columbia. In

history of the Big 12 Conference to compete in the title games for Football, Men’s Basketball and Baseball in the same academic year and the Tigers’ four Big 12 championships in 2008-09 were the most in school history.

The third-longest tenured Athletics Director in Mizzou history behind only Don Faurot and Chester Brewer, Alden took over an athletics department that barely ranked among the Top 100 of Division I athletics programs and now has Missouri poised to achieve its highest end-of-season ranking in the

Since his arrival at Missouri, the school has rou-tinely led the Big 12 Conference in graduation and Academic Progress Rates, while the overall health of MU’s athletics programs is at an all-time high. The Tigers ranked as the nation’s leader among BCS public institutions in Academic Progress Rate in 2008 and has consistently ranked in the Top 25 nationally, alongside the likes of Harvard, Yale and Stanford for overall APR success among all Division I programs. Mizzou has also led the Big 12 Conference in Academic Progress Rates each of the past four years.

Athletically, it’s hard to argue Mizzou’s advance-ment on a national level. The Tigers saw 15-of-20 sports qualify for postseason competition during the 2008-09 academic year, highlighted by Big 12 championships in football, basketball, softball and

Highly-regarded by his peers, Alden’s success at Missouri has earned him national notoriety amongst the NCAA hierarchy and garnered him the Athletics Director of the Year Award for the Central Region presented by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics in 2008. A mem-ber of numerous NCAA committees, including the NCAA Management Council, NCAA Championship/Competition Cabinet, NCAA Division I Leader-ship Council, Division I Athletics Directors Board of Directors, National Association of Collegiate

NCAA Oversight and Monitoring Group, Alden has

helped to drive policy that has not only shaped the current landscape of intercollegiate athletics, but has paved the way for the future growth of college sports as a whole.

Alden and his family have also been heavily in-volved in the Columbia community, working with lo-
