Mission of the Missouri Western State University FoundationThe mission of the Missouri Western State University Foundation is to inspire a lifelong passion for learning and to empower a diverse population of students to succeed as citizens in a changing world. The Foundation exists to foster partnerships and vital connections by encouraging gifts and stimulating investments to further the cause of Missouri Western State University.

On the cover: Missouri Western State University is celebrating its Centennial in 2015.

Dear Friends, I am privileged to be serving as president of Missouri Western State University as we celebrate our centennial this year. Our centennial theme is “100 Years of Transforming Lives,” and we know we could not have transformed the lives of our 28,000 alumni without your support. Our centennial year began with a kickoff of Missouri Western’s Centennial Capital Campaign and the announcement of a $20 million initial celebration goal. That campaign has been an outstanding success, as you will see in the following pages of this report. Between July 1, 2014 and June 30, 2015, we received several gifts and pledges to grow our endowment, including a $10 million deferred gift from a St. Joseph alumnus who wishes to remain anonymous. Additionally, Mosaic Life Care pledged $1.5 million to endow a professorship in the field of population health. We have also received several gifts to support the Spratt Memorial Stadium renovation project that is currently underway, and we continue to seek funds for our Potter Hall project. This past year, our generous donors supported students and faculty as they presented their research at national and international conferences; guest scholars who visited campus and met with students; and innovative programs that helped prepare students for their careers. Missouri Western has a lot to celebrate this year, and we truly appreciate your steadfast support. Thank you for all the ways you have helped Missouri Western transform lives.

Robert A. Vartabedian President, Missouri Western State University

The quotations throughout the 2015 Annual Report were taken directly from thank you notes sent to the Foundation from recipients of scholarships for 2014-15.

Dear Friends, Happy 100th anniversary to Missouri Western! It is with great excitement that

we publish the Annual Report of the Missouri Western State University Foundation during this centennial year. We have had a great year so far of celebrations and ceremonies, and 2015 will long be remembered as a stellar year in this institution’s history. As you will see in this report, we have received some incredible gifts to our Centennial Capital Campaign that kicked off in January 2015, and we are so grateful to each and every one of you for your support. But as we celebrate the past, we are also looking to the future. The Centennial Capital Campaign is a five-year effort, and although we have had great success so far, there is more work to be done and more dreams to be fulfilled. In the Missouri Western State University Foundation, we will continue our efforts to give our students and faculty that extra edge of excellence, and make their experience at this great University even better. This is the perfect time to tell you that we truly appreciate all you have done for Missouri Western in the past, and we look forward to the University’s future success. Because of our generous donors, Missouri Western can be assured a great second century.

Thank you,

Jerry Pickman ’85Executive Director, Missouri Western State University FoundationVice President for University Advancement

Foundation Highlights July 1, 2014 – June 30, 2015

• Missouri Western received the largest gift in its history in 2015 – $10 million from an alumnus who lives in St. Joseph and wishes to remain anonymous.

• Contributions received by the Foundation for FY2015 totaled $5,562,914, which included $282,490 in gifts-in-kind. Net assets grew by $3,138,404 in FY2015.

• The Foundation awarded scholarships totaling more than $789,673 to 433 students.

• The Foundation’s Student Excellence Fund awarded 134 students a total of $40,000 so they could attend and present their research at national and international conferences.

• Additionally, the Blake Scanlon Applied Learning Grant awarded $16,976 to 18 students.

• Three new scholarships were established in FY2015:

- Jane and Lyman Frick English Scholarship

- Algalee P. Adams Elementary Education Scholarship

- President’s Legacy Scholarship in memory of First Ladies Dorsey Looney and Lauren Scanlon.

• The fourth annual Engineering Technology Awards Banquet was held in March, honoring student Lauren Fletcher and community member Joe Gray ’42. The banquet, which supports the Department of Engineering Technology, is funded by generous sponsors, thanks to the efforts of the Engineering Technology Advancement Committee.

• The Missouri Western Ambassadors raised more than $11,000 at its 2015 Night at the Ritz – Centennial Garden Night at the Ritz – in May. All proceeds go to scholarships for nontraditional students.

• The 2014 R. Dan Boulware Convocation on Critical Issues featured Cronkite biographer Dr. Douglas Brinkley and the 2015 R. Dan Boulware Convocation on Critical Issues featured Tom Ridge, the first Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

· The Foundation received $553,055 on behalf of Missouri Western

Athletics from Gold Coat members, corporate sponsors, contributions and fundraising activities.

• The Missouri Western State University Foundation was notified that it was the recipient of approximately $260,000 from the estate of Dr. Algalee Pool Adams. The gift is designated for scholarships for elementary education majors. Dr. Adams was a 1939 graduate of the St. Joseph Junior College. She established a Charitable Remainder Unitrust before she passed away in 2002, and the Foundation received the funds after Dr. Adams’ daughter passed away last year.

• Drs. Robert and Laurel Vartabedian pledged $144,000 last year to create the President’s Centennial Circle, and this year, they designated $100,000 of that gift to establish a permanent, endowed fund to support the Walter Cronkite Memorial. The memorial, the vision of Dr. Robert Vartabedian, opened in 2013.

• Brent Collins, internationally known “mathematically driven” sculptor, notified the Missouri Western State University Foundation that he intends to gift his entire artist’s estate to the University.

Centennial Capital Campaign focuses on University’s future

2

Missouri Western’s Centennial Capital Campaign, which kicked off in January 2015, is the centerpiece of the University’s vision for the next 100 years. “As we celebrate the University’s Centennial this year, we have an opportunity to reflect on the past 100 years and the nearly 28,000 students who have benefited from earning a Missouri Western education,” said Dr. Robert Vartabedian, Missouri Western president. “But we also have the opportunity to plan and build support for the next 100 years. Our mission compels us to continue transforming lives.” Campaign co-chairs are Dr. Mark and Mary Margaret Laney, and Dan and Dale Boulware. Steve Craig is honorary chair. The five-year campaign focuses on three areas: investment in facilities,

investment in endowments, and investment in academic and co-curricular programming. A $20 million initial celebration goal was set, and more than $16.8 million was raised

in the silent phase of the campaign before the

kickoff. Jerry Pickman ’85, vice president for

university advancement and executive director of the Missouri Western State University Foundation, noted

that the campaign is a comprehensive, donor-centered effort, and the University will always honor donor-designated gifts. Donors may also leave their gifts undesignated. “I believe we are at a critical juncture in our history, and I am excited to plan for our future,” Dr. Vartabedian said. “Since our founding in 1915 as the St. Joseph Junior College to our evolution as a modern, vibrant campus that offers undergraduate and graduate degrees,

our commitment to improve and transform the lives of students has never changed.”

Goal 1: Investment in Campus Facilities: Spratt Memorial Stadium and Potter Hall Renovations to Spratt Memorial Stadium began in May 2015. Phase I was completed in time for the 2015 football and soccer seasons, and Phase II will be completed in Spring 2016. The project is funded by private donations and bonding. Phase I included new turf for the field; removing the track that currently surrounds the field; moving the visitor side closer to the field; and improving the seating on the home side. Phase II work includes a video scoreboard and an approximately 25,000 square-foot three-story building. The first floor will feature a new concourse area with a ticket office, team store, two concession stands and larger restrooms. The new Stadium Club, which more

than doubles the current space, will also be on the first floor. The second floor will house 14 individual suites with indoor and outdoor seating and a full kitchen, and a hall of fame room that will seat 175 people and be available for community rentals. The third level will include a control room for the video board, a coaches suite and a press box. It was announced in August 2015 that Steve Craig pledged $1.1 million to help fund a video board that is the largest video board in any Division II stadium. Because of Craig’s substantial support of time and resources since 2008, including a $5.5 million pledge that grew to nearly $7.8 million, the field was named Craig Field at Spratt Memorial Stadium. The $1.1 million pledge was the largest individual gift to Athletics in its history. Fundraising continues for Potter Hall, which houses the Department of Music; Department of Theatre, Cinema and Dance; and the Department of Art.

A Centennial Arts series was held in 2015 in an effort to raise funds to address several of the hall’s needs. “Dare to Dream” was held at the Paradox Theatre in downtown St. Joseph in March, and a Melissa Manchester concert was held in June at the Missouri Theater. The vision for Potter Hall includes a new performance hall, lobby and gallery space to showcase the artwork of internationally known sculptor Brent Collins, graphic design labs, additional studio space, a new black box theater and upgrades to the hall’s infrastructure. Last year, reserve funds were used to renovate restrooms and office space in Potter Hall, build a percussion room, and add a circle drive on the west side the building. Pickman noted that the project will proceed as funds are raised.

Goal 2: Investment in Missouri Western’s Endowment This goal will fund scholarships, programs and general operations of the Foundation, and the University has already received several pledges and deferred gifts to increase the endowment. Below are some of the gifts we have received. An alumnus who lives in St. Joseph and wishes to remain anonymous has pledged $10 million, the largest gift in Missouri Western’s history.

Wayne ’90 and Nanette Chatham, of Kansas City, Missouri, notified the Foundation that it would be the beneficiary of 10 percent of their estate, which is estimated to be a $500,000 gift. Wayne Chatham played basketball for Missouri Western as a student. Ralph ’77 and Norma Hiller pledged $200,000 to Missouri Western for scholarships for nontraditional students. The Hillers, who live in California, have supported Missouri Western scholarships for nontraditional students for several years through the Hiller Family Foundation. The family recently dissolved the Foundation and notified the Missouri Western State University Foundation that it would receive $200,000 for an endowed scholarship fund. With a pledge of $200,000 and a gift of nearly $50,000, Dr. Jane and Lyman Frick established the Jane and Lyman Frick English Scholarship. Dr. Jane Frick is a professor emerita of English and the former director of the Prairie Lands Writing Project. “We are so grateful to our generous donors for their support. Their gifts are essential to the growth and success of Missouri Western and its students,” Pickman said. “It is endowment funds that will generate sustaining support for the next 100 years and beyond.”

Mosaic Life Care endows professorship for population health A Centennial Capital Campaign leadership gift of $1.5 million from Mosaic Life Care has created the Mosaic Professorship for Population Health, the first endowed professorship

in Missouri Western’s history. Missouri Western’s Bachelor of Science in

Population Health Management was first offered in fall 2015, becoming Missouri’s first undergraduate degree program in population health. Population health is an approach to health that expands beyond the individual-level focus of traditional clinical and preventive medicine by addressing a broad range of factors that impact health on a population level. “We are extremely grateful for Mosaic’s generous gift which will enable us to recruit and retain a highly qualified faculty member in this growing field,” Dr. Vartabedian said. “In turn, we envision tremendous strides in population health outcomes for our region and beyond. I believe this gift has the potential to produce truly pioneering work and be a ‘game-changer’ for Missouri Western.”

Goal 3: Investment in Academic and Co-curricular Programming This focus of the campaign will support programs, equipment and emerging needs. Currently, many of these needs are met with donations to the University’s Annual Fund. Pickman said he hopes donors will continue to contribute to the Annual Fund and consider an additional gift to the campaign. “Our donors have always been phenomenal,” he said. “We truly understand that the support we receive from our alumni, our friends and the community is vitally important to our future, and we greatly appreciate it.”

While many gifts to the Foundation are designated for a particular project or scholarship, many gifts are undesignated, which provide outstanding “extras” for students that may not otherwise be available. Each spring, faculty members and staff across campus submit requests for funding from the Allocation Committee of the Foundation Board of Directors. For the academic year 2014-15, the committee allocated $49,200 for 20 projects and programs. Some of those that were funded are listed below.• GEMS Program Facilitators The Foundation funded a

presenter from GEMS, Girls Educational and Mentoring Services, organization to visit campus and meet with student groups and faculty members to discuss their experiences and what can be done. The visit was planned by the Organization of Student Social Workers and the Student American Corrections Association.

• Eggs and Issues Speaker Series featured Patt Lilly, president and CEO of the St. Joseph Chamber of Commerce, “The Rise of the St. Joseph Economy;” and Tim Crowley, “The Power of Intentional Leadership: Everything is Possible When You Connect, Collaborate and Lead by Example.”

• Galileo’s Legacy Conference The annual conference in April 2015 hosted two presentations on systemic inequalities that were funded by the Foundation: Steven Bryant, director of the Office of Intercultural Affairs in the Intercultural International Center at Northwest Missouri State University,

Undesignated gifts fund special allocations

and Dr. Sikivu Hutchinson, an American feminist, atheist and author. The 2015 theme was, “Intersectionality and the Sciences: the Effect of Kyriarchy on the Natural and Social Sciences.”

• Funds provided from the Foundation for the Annual Child Abuse Investigator Conference helped offset costs to bring in national speakers and trainers, including speaker fees, travel expenses, room rentals on campus, cost of facilities, cost of food for attendees, name tags, folders, programs, advertising and printing speaker materials.

• Funds for members of the award-winning Fountain City Brass Band to offer a concert and masterclasses for students was also approved. The Band, founded by Department of Music chair Lee Harrelson, has won six U.S. Open Brass Band championships and four North American Brass Band championships since its first competition in 2004.

• The Foundation also helped fund the Department of Music’s opera workshop, “The Tragedy of Carmen,” which was held in at the Restoration Church in downtown St. Joseph in May 2015. The cast included six students and a member of the music faculty. It was directed by Dr. Susan Carter, associate professor of music.

Dear Friends, On behalf of the Foundation, I want to thank you for your support of the University. This annual report is a testament to the outstanding support that Missouri Western receives from its donors. As Missouri Western celebrates its centennial, we have spent a lot of time looking back on the institution’s past 100 years. That 100-year history is filled with examples of how this community and region strongly support Missouri Western. This institution’s success and growth over the past century would not have been possible without our community and regional support. As the chair of the Foundation Board of Directors, I can tell you that Missouri Western is at a very exciting place in its history and poised for a great second century. Your support in the past has brought Missouri Western to where it is today, and your support in the future is needed more than ever. As you read through this annual report, I hope you realize what a crucial role you play in students’ lives, and the lives of everyone in our community and region, when you contribute to the Foundation. You are very important to Missouri Western.

Thank you,

Jason Horn ’95Chair, Foundation Board of Directors

“ By awarding me this scholarship, you have lightened my financial burden, which

allows me to focus more on the most important aspect of school – learning. Your generosity has inspired me to help others and give back to the community. I hope one day I will be able to help students achieve their goals just as you have helped me.”

“ Your generous gift to my education is greatly appreciated. I do not take it lightly when

people invest in my life and in my future. With your investment in my education, I know your gift will go beyond my final year of schooling. I love to serve and help people and that is what your gift allows me to do. Thank You.”

Cash Gifts Cash contributions are the most frequent charitable gift. Checks should be made payable to Missouri Western State University Foundation. The most frequent contributions are to the Annual Fund.

Gifts of Securities – Stocks, Bonds & Mutual Funds Charitable gifts of stocks, bonds or mutual funds that have been held for at least one year and have appreciated offer special tax advantages. You will receive a tax deduction for the full market value of the gift, but you will not have to pay capital gains tax on the appreciated amount. If you sell depreciated stock and contribute the proceeds, you will receive both a tax deduction for the charitable gift and a deduction for the capital loss.

Gifts of Real Estate Donations of appreciated homes and other real property are entitled to an income tax deduction equal to the full value of the property and no tax on the capital gain. If debt-free property is donated, the gift is deductible at the property’s appraised value. It may even be possible to make your gift of property now but still maintain the right to use the property. By making this gift

now, rather than in your will, you can realize an immediate income tax deduction.

Memorial Gifts Any gift may be given in memory or honor of a friend or family member.

Gifts-in-Kind Tangible personal property can be given to support Missouri Western. These gifts may be eligible for a deduction of the item’s fair market value, if the gift is related to the charitable purpose of the university. All personal property gifts must be approved by the Foundation.

Corporate Matching Gifts A matching gift program provided through your employer or board membership may allow you to increase the value of your gift. Many companies match charitable gifts made by their employees, retirees or board members.

Deferred or Planned Gifts Deferred gifts help insure Missouri Western’s future. A deferred gift through an estate plan or life income gift offers you the ability to support Missouri Western but retain the income from those assets during your lifetime.

Will or Revocable “Living” Trust A bequest contained in a person’s will or revocable “living” trust is the most common form of planned gift.

Charitable Remainder Trust This gift allows you to irrevocably place cash, securities or other property in a trust but keep a specified income for life. This can be done by an annuity trust or unitrust.

Gifts of Life Insurance Missouri Western can be named as primary or contingent beneficiary of a life insurance policy. Life insurance gifts are simple; just ask the insurance company for the appropriate forms to make the Foundation the owner and beneficiary of a policy. Gifts of a policy are tax deductible, as are future premium payments.

Gifts of Retirement Plans Naming Missouri Western as a primary or contingent beneficiary of a retirement plan (i.e. IRA, 401(k)) can benefit both Missouri Western and your estate. Your retirement account’s plan administrator can help you designate Missouri Western as a beneficiary.

There are many ways you can make a difference through gifts to Missouri Western. From outright contributions to planned giving, there are many opportunities for you to get involved. As a public charitable organization, gifts to the Missouri Western State University Foundation are deductible at the highest limits allowed for federal income or estate tax purposes.
