MitosisA model demonstration of this part

of cell division.

Page 2: Mitosis1

PreparationStart by laying the string circle flat on the table in a “cell like” shape.

Page 3: Mitosis1

PreparationAdd the chromosomes – 1 yellow string and 1 red string(note – there are more than this, but for explanation purposes, we shall keep it simple)

Page 4: Mitosis1

PreparationAdd the Centrioles(note – these are MUCH LARGER than normal for demonstration purposes)

Page 5: Mitosis1

INTERPHASE The cell remains in this phase as it carries out normal life processes. DNA is replicated before the division process begins. Chromosomes change to sister chromatids at the end of this phase.

Page 6: Mitosis1

PROPHASESister Chromatids are present. Centrioles appear and begin to move to opposite ends of cell. Spindle fibers form between the poles.

Page 7: Mitosis1

METAPHASESister chromatids line up along the center of the cell. They attach to the spindle fibers.

Page 8: Mitosis1

ANAPHASESister Chromatids separate and are pulled toward cell edges. They move toward the opposite ends of the cell.

Page 9: Mitosis1

TELOPHASENew nucleus forms at each end of the dividing cell. Mitosis is ending.

Page 10: Mitosis1

CYTOKINESISThe rest of the cell contents divided between 2 daughter cells. Cell membrane moves inward to create two cells, each with its own nucleus and identical chromosomes.

Page 11: Mitosis1

New cell is formed and the process begins again.
