The Mitzvot of the Land

• The Torah describes Mitzvot (Commandments) to perform on the land and on produce of the Land of Israel

• Mitzvot of the Land were kept for thousands of years while Jews worked and lived in the Land of Israel

• G-d promised bountiful abundance and wealth to those who keep the Mitzvot and those who Tithe the produce of the Land

• The Mitzvot are performed on a constant, continual basis by farmers, vintners and landowners

Importance of the Mitzvot

• Our Sages say, "Tithes [Maaser, generally, the Mitzvot of the Land] are a Protective Fence for Wealth" (Avot 3:17)

• One who performs the tithing of produce of the Land (in addition to tithing of income) will merit to receive even greater fortune, as the Talmud expounds on the Torah statement:– – Devarim / Deuteronomy 14:22 [Transl. "Tithe shall you tithe, the entire crop of your planting, the

produce of the field, year by year."].

• "Give Tithes so that You Will Become Wealthy" (Talmud Taanit 9a)• In the merit of Jews keeping the Shmittah (the Seventh Year, or the Shabbat of the

Land) laws, G-d’s abundant blessings are promised in the subsequent years• In the merit of keeping Shmittah and other Mitzvot of the Land, the Jewish people

receive G-d’s reward of remaining in the Land of Israel amidst abundance• The Torah singles out the laws of Shmittah of the land because failure to keep

them causes exile from the land" (Seforno 25:1)

Historical Perspective

• The Talmud states that Moshe Rabbeinu (Moses our Teacher) begged G-d to allow him to enter the Land of Israel and to perform the Mitzvot that can only be observed there.

• The Mitzvot of the Land have been performed in an unbroken chain since Joshua and the Jewish people entered the Land of Israel over 3,400 years ago

• Jews who keep the Mitzvot of the Land are called “Mighty Men of Power” – the only other time this term is used is when the Jewish nation accepted G-d’s Torah at Mount Sinai

• Just as Shabbat (Sabbath) is the weekly cycle through which we demonstrate our complete trust in G-d, so too, from the blessings of the Land He gave us, we Tithe, we give to the poor and we keep His Shabbat of the Land holy (Sefer HaChinuch 84)

• The Land of Israel is the “King’s Palace”. The produce of the King’s Palace is special – and just as our sustenance is derived from His produce we grow in the Palace, we must ensure that it is kept holy and portions are separated appropriately – so that we benefit from the blessings of His handiwork (Sefer HaChinuch 385 & Sefer Chareidim)
