Objective of the activity: 1-verify their understanding of the story, especially if they remember the characters.2-Make links with the story and their prior knowledge of the food animals eat.
Suggested steps to follow:
1-Read the story to the students.2-Ask them which animal they remember.3-Distribute the sheet.4-Explain that they have to draw a line from the
animal to its favourite food.5-The teacher can draw an example with them
on the board.6-Students do the activity individually.7-Teacher asks students to say their answer by
using the sentence: “The (animal) eats (food)”.
8-The teacher can finish by asking if they know other animals, and more advance, if they know what they eat.

NOTE : The teacher should read the story as a beginning for the long-term project.
Activity # 1Knowing the members of a family
Level: grade 3 ESL students
MELS Competency: “To reinvest understanding of oral and written texts”
Objective: Give the students a list of words about family members
Steps suggested for the activity:
1-Ask the students which family members are described in the story.
2-Ask the students if they know other family members
3-Distribute the sheet no 2 and ask the students to cut the squares.
4-Distribute the sheet no 1 5-Explain the activity
a. The teacher will say a word and the student has to place the word on the right illustration.
b. The activity can be done in teams of 2 or 3c. Explain how they can have a bingo (vertically,
horizontally or diagonally).
6-Start the bingo. The teacher can help for the first time. The teacher can do it several times and make it more difficult each time (say the words faster for example).
7-Pick up the bingo sheet and the words and ask the students to name the different words they learned. Write the list on the board for visual.
Activity # 2 Build a family tree
Level: grade 3 ESL students
MELS competency: “To write texts”
Objective: Have the students use the family words to build their own family tree.
Steps suggested for the activity:
1-Give the students the list of words they saw on the last activity. (Brother, sister, cousins, father, mother, grand-father, grand-mother).
2-Distribute the sheet on which they will write their family tree. A cardboard is suggested.
3-With the list of words, students write them where they think they go. Mention that one word can go in more than one place.
4-Correct with the students.5-Ask the students to put colours on their sheet.
Homework
The students have to bring their family tree sheet home. They have to ask their parents the names of their family members and write them on their family tree
The students are asked to use sentences like:

Activity # 3 Presenting my family tree
Level: grade 3 ESL students
MELS competency: “To interact orally in English”.
Objective: Have the students speak in English in front of their classmates and present their family.
Steps suggested for the activity:
1-The teacher could start by presenting his/her family tree.
2- In groups of four, students present their family each in turn at the other three students.
3-Teacher moves around the class to verify the oral presentation of the students.
4-The teacher can select the two best students and ask them if they want to present in front of the class. The teacher could also ask for volunteers to present in front of the class.
5-To conclude the long-term project, students can hang their project on the walls of the classroom or in the corridor.
