If you have managed to recycle more than your mixed recycling bin can hold, please contact Zero Waste Western Isles to discuss further options which may be available.

Most of us know that we should recycle more to protect the environment and to meet Government targets but do you know the true financial impact on everyone in the Western Isles if we are not able to reduce what goes to landfill?

Despite a population of less than 30,000 we send well over 15,000 tonnes of household waste to landfill each year – the equivalent of more than half a tonne of waste produced by each person each year!

For each tonne of waste going to landfill the Comhairle currently has to pay £56 in Landfill Tax - the equivalent of more than £840,000 each year which could be spent on much better things, such as education and homecare or even sport and leisure facilities. This tax is on top of the ever increasing costs of developing landfill site capacity to comply with new European standards.

So the real costs are even higher.

And of course, Landfill Tax does not remain at the same rate every year. It is currently on an £8 “escalator” taking it up to £64 from April 2012 and £72 from April 2013 and so on.

Each of these £8 increases represents a quarter of a million pounds in Landfill Tax charges each year.

This means that almost £100,000 has to be cut from other services each year.

By using the Mixed Recycling, Glass Only and your existing Organic Bin it should be possible to reduce the amount of waste that cannot be recycled to a minimum. We hope that this service will encourage householders to recycle more, reducing the waste that they send to landfill and reducing the severe financial impact of Landfill Tax on other services.

Benefits of service for you:

• No need to separate cans, plastic and

paper

• Recycling bins provided at your door

• Time saving

• Reduce waste going to landfill

• Help the Western Isles meet Scottish

Government targets

• Protect local services by saving Landfill Tax

What can you do to help protect your local services?

Mrs Jessie MacDonald

of Anderson Road,

Stornoway, with her

new bins, who said:

“It is handy having the recycling bins outside my door. It’s a lot quicker than the old system—no need for bags, or blue buckets . You can put so much more into the blue bin. I understand why the council are doing this.”
