Why i am thankful.....

Just a few weeks ago, we celebrated the festival of Sukkot during which each day we would sing songs of praise and thankfulness during the Hallel portion of the morning service. In a few weeks from now we as

Jews and Americans we come together at tables of family and friends to join all Americans in a day of Thanks-giving, patterned on our own holiday of Sukkot by the Pilgrims after a bitter winter, almost 400 years ago.

From my place in the MJCBY building (or from the cat bird’s seat for those of you that remember Red Barber) I was a witness and participant in two vignettes that epitomize our theme for this year.

WE aRE MJCBY

Our 18 month to 5 year olds, students in our Shalom Yeladim – Judie Gerstein Early Learning Center, go outside the building into a world that transcends time and space. They stand for the first time under the Sukkah and are taught the meaning of the fragile structure and the lulav and etrog in their hands by our Rabbi and their teachers. They take the leaves of the lulav and yellow etrog and shake and waive in all directions. Their eyes gleam with excitement and their faces shine with pride. This moment is Priceless!

A copy of a bible comes into the building in a box with other books destined for the trash or a genizah (burial site for sacred texts). I tend to look at these before allocating them for disposal and see inside an inscription. “To Myron, on the occasion of your Bar Mitzvah from your Grandmother (name written in Hebrew). As it turns out, Myron is Dr. Myron Friedman, z’l, our long time member. The date was 1933 and the grandmother was Sarah Friedman, wife of one of the founders of MJCBY in 1899, Meyer Friedman. Needless to say, this bible was not leaving my possession until it was returned to its rightful family. During Sukkot, Lola Friedman, Myron’s widow and her two daughters came into my office as I handed to them this precious remembrance. From Sarah to Myron and now to his daughters, 5 generations all together bound by this bible. Their eyes also gleamed with tears of joy to hold this piece of their family. This moment is Forever!

ThEY aRE MJCBY! WE aRE MJCBY! ThE FUTURE iS NOW!

We at the Morristown Jewish Center Beit Yisrael are the present recipients of this special heritage. We have been given a unique opportunity by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation to help to guarantee and sustain MJCBY as a synagogue, a home of learning and a Jewish family in the heart of historic Morristown for generations to come. Everyone can be part of the Create a Jewish Legacy program whether you are just starting a family or are welcoming great-grandchildren into you homes and your hearts. All you have to do (may you live to 120) is declare that you have included MJCBY in your estate plans. By doing so, you the members of MJCBY today are setting the stage for the next and future generations of MJCBY. In addition, by doing so, MJCBY is eligible for a monetary grant from the Grinspoon Foundation for our use.

So, from Founders (Meyer and Sarah Friedman) to Future (my daily stars of brightness at Shalom Yeladim).

WE aRE all MJCBY!!

This why I am thankful and this is why I am joining those who choose to Leave a Jewish Legacy to our Future. Ask me, the Rabbi, Robert or Fern how you can join the CJL (Create a Jewish Legacy) generation.

So join us all in Living a meaningful Jewish life and choose to Leave a Jewish Legacy for the generations to come.

Similar to their moms and like many other members of their

families, Hannah Benton and Alison Fleischman, both high

school juniors, traveled to Israel this past summer. Their trip,

not unlike the one their moms took when they were teenagers,

resulted in many new friends, a richer sense of their own Jewish

identities and a deepening of their very own special friendship

bond.

Karen and Heidi had the same experiences on their teen trip to

Israel many years ago. But after had lost touch. It was only a

chance meeting at an ice skating rink over a decade ago when

they reconnected and realized they were both members at MJCBY.

Soon after their daughters Hannah and Alison met in Hebrew

School and the families became close.

“At first Alison and Hannah were in different classes and didn’t

know each other,” the moms share. Hannah and Alison chime in,

“But spending a lot of time together at shul brought us closer and

as we got older we discovered we had a lot of similar interests.”

When the families decided to send their two daughters on their

summer trip together they were excited to know that their

children were going to have similar experiences to what they had

as teenagers. For Hannah and Alison, it was comforting to know

someone who would be on the trip and during their time away,

they leaned on each other for comfort during the stress of the

bombings.

“L’dor v’dor,” says Heidi, “It was actually a dream that I always

had for Alison to be able to go on similar trip that I was able to

and for the girls to be able to solidify their friendship and build

their Jewish identity together.

“For us,” adds Karen, “the seed was planted long ago, but it was

watered here at MJCBY.”

We are MJCBY. To learn more about Hannah and Alison’s trip to

A fond Memory….

Julie and I were at a shiva home in Ocean County this week.

We spoke of the death of Julie’s aunt occurring on Yom Kip-

pur. Another visitor reacted strongly when she heard I was from

Morristown.

She attended Drew University and was not able to go

home for the High Holidays. All the Jewish students were

invited to the Conservative synagogue in Morristown. She

remembers someone invited her back to their home for the

break fast. The people there were so warm and inviting.

“It was such a lovely experience which I will never forget.”

I told her that we still invite students from Drew and

Fairleigh Dickinson universities to our services. The

only thing that makes this story a bit unusual is that

the story teller was 85 years old, thus making her fond

memory of MJCBY’s hospitality a 65-year-old memory!

This is who we were; this is who we continue to be.

Dear Families,

Welcome back to a new school year with the new theme... Or Hadash!

Or Hadash means new light, and it is our goal this year to infuse a special light into our school and program.

First, help me welcome Morah Mimi Zukoff to the position of Assistant Director of our School. Mimi is thoughtful, well-regarded, diligent, compassionate and creative - all traits that will serve her and us well. I am excited to work with her.

As a reminder, please make sure your child has been registered on our new ACTIVIT-E web site, so we can be in contact with you throughout the year. You can select the School Information tab and download a multitude of forms, including the Education Handbook.

I am so looking forward to our Family Fun Day Opening Day of school which will be held at Stonybrook Day Camp in Succasunna. Every child should attend with at least one parent (unenrolled siblings and prospective families are welcome). It will be a wonderful way to meet your teachers, share in learning and keep summer camp going for onemore day.

Meet Mimi ZukoffOur New Assistant Religious School DirectorMimi Zukoff (Assistant Principal and 6th Grade Teacher) has been working at Morristown Jewish Center – Beit Yisrael since September, 1999. After completing Project Moreh (a religious school teacher training program sponsored by Federation), she began as a 4th grade teacher. In subsequent years, Mrs. Zukoff moved up first to 5th grade and then to 6th grade, where she found her niche! She loves teaching 6th grade for many reasons, mainly that the children are mature enough to study complicated and challenging material while still needing to have fun and play a little. In fact, Mrs. Zukoff has a vast collection of various games and approaches, which she employs to make learning fun. Over the past several years, Mrs. Zukoff has worked with Melissa and Rabbi Nesson to strengthen the Pre B’nai Mitzvah component of the 6th grade curriculum, leading the students to examine and embrace the “Mitzvah” in the bar/bat mitzvah. She assists students in finding or designing meaningful Tikkun Olam projects to start training them in the lifelong charge of fixing the world one little bit at a time. This year, Mrs. Zukoff is stepping up to a newly created Assistant Principal position in which she will assist Melissa in numerous areas including curriculum and staff development, class services, and general administration.

Men and women are invited to join a new multi-level yoga class. This class is designed to develop balance,

Natasha encourages everyone to step onto the mat and open themselves up to the possibility of becoming stronger, more flexible, confident, balanced and compassionate towards themselves. Set in the summer of 2000, Mona (Clara Khoury), a

young Druze woman living at Majdal Shams in the Golan

Heights, is about to marry a successful Syrian actor. Follow-

ing the hostilities between Israel and Syria, there is now

the demilitarized UNDOF zone between occupied Golan and

Syria observed by United Nations staff. Crossing of the zone

is extremely rare as it is only granted by both sides under

special circumstances. It has taken six months to obtain per-

mission from the Israeli administration for Mona to leave the

Golan. When Mona crosses, she will not be able to return to

her family on the Golan even to visit. Mona is a bit hesitant

also because she doesn’t know her husband-to-be. When the

family gathers for Mona’s wedding, an insane bureaucracy

jeopardizes the ceremony.

The film has garnered critical acclaim and has won or been

nominated internationally for several notable awards.

We’ve been busy sprucing up over the summer. Wait until you see our newly painted rooms, refinished floors and new carpeting. Everything looks fantastic and so clean for the New Year.

Thank you to all those who joined us for Summer Fun. What a great time we had with Morah Sharon, Ivy and Alisha. Special thanks to Judy Josephson for volunteering her time this summer at camp and Rick Barkauskas for his painting expertise. We would also like to thank J&S Carpets for donating the carpet and area rugs.

Please make sure all of your paperwork is returned before the start of the school year. We are very excited about our new ACTIVIT-E website. We will be posting messages, weekly blurbs, school calendar (with updates and changes) and lots more. Please be sure you are registered.

I am looking forward to a wonderful year with our nurturing and creative staff. Family News

Julie and Aaron Perlow happily in-vite family, friends and the congre-

gation to join us as our son, Lance, is called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, November 22, 2014. Thanks to the ongoing support of both the synagogue and religious school as well as the encouragement of his family, Lance has embraced and enjoyed the process of becoming a Bar Mitzvah.

Currently, Lance is a seventh-grade student at The Pingry School in Basking Ridge, NJ. He plays football, travel basketball and both travel & recreational baseball for Randolph Township. Additionally, he plays middle school football, basketball and baseball at Pingry. Lance also has been a participant in the Jr. Maccabi Games for basketball for the past three years. Like in the classroom, he puts 100% effort on the fields and courts and plays with an intense effort to be both the best athlete and team player.

Christel and Walter Lewis invite the congregation to share in their joy when their son, Charles Ian, is called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on November 15. Charlie is a 7th grader at Gill St. Bernard’s School in Glad-stone, NJ. He is an Honor Roll student, ex-celling particularly at Math and History. He is an avid soccer player, participating both in Morris County and Gill St. Bernard’s teams. He enjoys hanging out with his friends, playing floor hockey and video games. For Charlie’s Mitzvah project, he has com-bined his love for soccer with his outgoing personality and compassionate nature. He participates in S.N.A.P. (Special Needs Ath-letic Program) serving as a mentor to special needs children during sports activities. He plans to continue his participation in this program for a least two more years.Charlie’s parents, his siblings, Genevieve and Mark, and his grandparents are very proud of Charlie’s accomplishments and look forward to celebrating this milestone with family and friends.

For his Mitzvah project, Lance has been working weekly as an assistant at the Randolph YMCA in two children’s exercise classes. Lance helps with signing them in at the beginning of the classes and engages them quickly in the class activity. He hopes to help them begin to love exercise and just feel good about themselves. Throughout the experience, he will also work with kids who are challenged by the activity to prevent them from becoming frustrated. It is very fulfilling for Lance to be part of these children’s lives as he enables them to have fun and enjoy themselves. Lance hopes to give back to his community by working at the YMCA and wants to continue volunteering there after his Bar Mitzvah.

Lance, we are so proud of the young man you have become! Your parents, along with your older brother, Shane, join the many family & friends in wishing you a heart felt Mazal Tov. We can’t wait to share this special day with you.

talented board that wants to see

the chapter grow in its numbers and

enrich its membership with great pro-

grams. This month we are focusing on

Israel and Israeli culture. On November

16, from 6:30-8:30pm, we will host an

Israeli Movie Night. The board President,

Josh Usiskin, and Israel Awareness Ex-

ecutive Vice President, Elias Neibart, are

teaming up to create an educational eve-

ning to help Morristown USYers connect

cious graham cracker sukkot. At our Iron

Chef event we had a great time using

crazy ingredients. We can't wait for our

first outing of the year as we go bowling

as I walk through the halls of our nursery school, I am al-

ways greeted with hugs, smiles and even songs. From our

youngest families that come to Me & My Shadow to our oldest

children in our kindergarten class, there is always so much to

see and be a part of. We want to thank Harriet Sakofs and the

Sisterhood for making the SY children the most delicious squash

& banana muffins. The squash was picked by the children in the

nursery school from our garden.

Help spread the word about the amazing things we do here

at Shalom Yeladim. Our doors are always open and would love

to show you around. October has been a very busy month,

including:

• Field trip to Alstede Farms in Chester.

• Sunday In The Sukkah, with The Partnership of

Jewish Learning & Life.

• Fire Prevention Month, with our neighbors at the

Morristown Fire Station.

I am looking for high school students who need community

service credits to volunteer one day a week in our nursery

November is a time for reflecting on what we have.

It is a month in which people count blessings and

take the time to acknowledge and appreciate the good-

ness in the world. It is a time during which, despite

everything that is happening in the world and despite

the news that is constantly bombarding our lives, we

get to share time with our families and we stress the

importance of compassion and giving.

Second grade students and parents met together to

learn about Maimonides Ladder of Tzedakah. They

learned that while all tzedakah is a mitzvah, some

ways of giving are considered more holy and spiritually

higher. Toward the top of Maimonides Ladder is giving

to a stranger anonymously, who has not asked for help.

As part of second grade parent day, the second grade

students have begun a warm clothing drive – hats, gloves,

and scarves for students in a school in New York City

located in an economically challenged area. They will be

collecting in boxes around the building until November

22. Please take time to donate new or clean, gently used

warm weather gear for needy school children. The donation

will be given anonymously, but we will know in our hearts

that we are helping keep children warm this winter.

What a wonderful way to teach our children to be

the mensch we want them to be, to reflect on the

important things in life. We need to constantly remind

our children that gratitude is key to appreciating

life. It is the constant thanking and appreciating

what will eventually teach our kids to celebrate life.
