New Long-Range Undersea Robot Goes the Distance

Over the past decade, the under-sea robots known as autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) have become increasingly important in oceanographic research. Today's AUVs fall into two groups: 1) pro-peller-driven vehicles that can trav-el fast and carry lots of instruments, but are limited to expeditions of only a few days; and 2) "gliders," which can stay at sea for weeks or even months at a time, but cannot travel very quickly. MBARI engineers re-cently demonstrated a new super-efficient AUV that combines the best of these two approaches. This new long-range AUV (LRAUV) can travel rapidly for hundreds of kil-ometers, "hover" in the water for weeks at a time, and carry a wide variety of instruments

Huzur (atba) gave a discourse on spending for the cause of God in his Fri-day sermon today. He began by reciting the following Quranic verses:“They who spend their wealth for the cause of Allah, then follow not up what they have spent with taunt or injury, for them is their reward with their Lord, and they shall have no fear, nor shall they grieve.’ (2:263)‘Those who spend their wealth by night and day, secretly and openly, have their reward with their Lord; on them shall come no fear, nor shall they grieve.’ (2:275)The Holy Qur’an recurrently draws the attention of believers towards spend-ing in the way of God with the condition that it is solely to attain the pleasure of God, as stated: ‘…while you spend not but to seek the favour of Allah…’ (2:273). Monterey Bay as part of MBARI's CANON experiment. Oceanogra-phers used Tethys to track patches of microscopic algae that were carried around the bay by currents. During this experiment, the robot showed that it could travel fast enough to buck the currents, but could also go into "hover mode" to drift with the currents when needed. In "high-speed mode" the LRAUV can travel up to one meter per sec-ond (2.25 miles an hour) -- about four times faster than most under-water gliders. However, it can also travel long distances at around half this speedAfter spending four years design-ing, building, and testing Tethys, MBARI engineers were happy to see it working out in the real ocean. In fact, the AUV performed even better than expected. The AUV completed a four-day science run with plenty of battery power remaining, using relatively low-power rechargeable batteries. Based on these promising initial results, the researchers hope that the little robot will eventually be able to travel from California to Hawaii using high-power dispos-able batteries.

Tethys is the brainchild of MBARI's Chief Technologist, Jim Belling-ham, who has been designing cutting-edge AUVs for almost 20 years. Bellingham says, "In design-ing this AUV, we were actually try-ing to make a fundamental change in how we do oceanography. In the past, if we wanted to study some-thing like an algal bloom, we could either put out a mooring and hope that the bloom would drift past it, or we could schedule a research cruise and hope that the bloom would hap-pen while we were out on the ship. Tethys can travel to a spot in the ocean and 'park' there until some-thing interesting happens. Once a bloom occurs, Tethys can move fast enough to follow the bloom and watch it evolve, the way a biologist on land might follow and study a herd of deer."

AMA NEWCASTLE FIRST QUESTIONS & ANSWER SECTION

ily mindful of seeking God’s pleasure. If this point is understood, it leads to communal as well as spiritual development; in addition it removes domestic problems, daily complaints from husbands and wives. Husbands complain that the undue demands of their wives put them in debt whereas wives com-plain that husbands do not fulfil their wishes. Daily quarrelling wrecks peace in family homes and has an adverse effect on children. Women complain that whatever husbands earn, they spend out with their friends or spend on them-selves. This causes anxiety. If money is spent to seek the pleasure of God, domestic peace is maintained, upbringing of children is on the right lines, the family income is blessed and one is drawn towards the spirit of sacrifice. Doubtlessly, one’s family is entitled to one’s wealth, however, if moderation is maintained, all the dues are paid and one is also drawn to spend in the way of God. Read Full Summary
