The Gallery: Kristin Musser Story by Nell Musolf
Architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe once famously said that “God is in the details.” It’s a
sentiment that might be shared by all architects; the notion that the details are what make something not only interesting but also memorable. Silversmith Kristin Musser has a degree in architecture so she knows more than a thing or two about details.
She grew up in Lamar, Colo., and went to college at Kansas City University in Manhattan, Kansas, where she received a degree in architecture. She worked in the architectural field for several years before moving to Minnesota with her husband, Rob, when he began working at Hubbard Feeds in Mankato.
After having two children (sons Georic and Ryan), Musser traded her drafting table for mothering. The desire to create, however, remained.
In 2010, Musser approached Patty Conlin, goldsmith and owner of the Stones Throw Gallery, and asked if Conlin taught any community education classes. Conlin offered to take Musser on as an apprentice. At that point Musser decided to work with silver instead of gold, and there were two reasons for that. One, gold is very expensive to work with. And two, there are very few silversmiths in the area.
“I leave the gold to Patty,” Musser said with a laugh. “I’m very happy working with silver.”
Musser credits Conlin with helping her grow as an artist while being not only a mentor but a friend as well.
“Patty is wonderful,” Musser said. “I have learned so much from her. I still go to her when I’m having trouble with a piece. She has a much lighter touch with the torch than I do.”
As a silversmith, Musser has learned how to work with a wide variety of tools including torches, handsaws, files, hammers and anvils. She works out of a studio in her home and said that working with silver can be quite noisy at times.
“I’m often banging on things and hammering and making all kinds of noise,” Musser said.
Musser sells her pieces at the Stones Throw and creates jewelry for clients who come to her, often bringing stones they want her to use in a piece. She has worked with all kinds of stones and has made many mother’s rings and pendants.
“People have an idea or have seen something that I’ve done and want something along the same lines,” Musser said. “I had one client who wanted a mother’s pendant using the birthstones of her three children along with a piece of Hawaiian lava stone. That was a little tricky but when I was through the birthstones actually had the same colors that were in the lava stone so it turned out very well.”
Musser also removes stones from settings and puts them into new settings. She enjoys being a silversmith, especially working with her hands and being able to create something new out of something old.
“I like what I do,” Musser said. “I loved being an architect but I didn’t like computer graphics which was a big part of the job. Now I’m doing something where I am still creating and making something that has permanence. I apply the same principles of design with my jewelry that I use as an architect. It’s very satisfying.”
Musser is always willing to take on challenging projects and likes getting to know her clients and learning about what they want her to create. She has worked with many different materials including quartz, agates and petrified wood. Once she has finished a piece for a client, it is delivered along with a few caveats.
“I do tell my customers that they should remove their jewelry before gardening, doing the dishes, taking a shower and sleeping,” Musser said. “People think that since jewelry is made out of silver or gold that it’s indestructible, but it isn’t.”
For now Musser terms her artwork as a hobby that is turning into a career.
“I’m happy because I’m making things that are unique and artful,” Musser said.
Unique and Artful

Sometimes it can be the smallest things that catch a person’s attention, like a small bit of red peeking out from a stark white landscape.
Sometimes a unique shape or pattern reveals itself at just the right moment as you walk past. Maybe you didn’t see it at first, but at just the right angle … it’s there.
Many of the people that submitted photos for this month’s issue managed to capture that experience. Maybe they sought out that special moment. Maybe they happened upon it with camera in hand and captured it before it was gone.
Either way, that small, brief moment is now theirs to share with others, and us. MM

Wysi-what?Last January, sitting in my house during a few vacation days
with my family, we got lost in a series of documentaries about health, the food industry and eating in general.
I got so caught up in getting healthy that I vowed to join my daughter as a vegetarian. I also vowed — after watching “Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead” — to try juicing. Trying it, though, reminded me that a few folks in town were starting up a juicing venture with a funny name. Whatchamacallit? No, that’s a tasty candy bar. Whodini? No, that’s a misspelled version of a famous magician.
Then our food writer informed me she was writing her March food article on something walled Wysiwig. Then I remembered. That’s the new juice bar in town, run in part by Kristi Schuck, whose essay you may have read on the pages of Mankato Magazine’s November issue. Wysiwig is an adorable addition to the downtown scene. You should check it out, you guys. And definitely check out Sarah Johnson’s piece on the next page.
Also, if you were wondering how our wine writer, Leigh Pomeroy, qualifies as an expert, read his column. His tale of dropping everything and trying to find a job in the wine industry is an entertaining one.
And hey, smile everyone! It’s getting warmer ... Barbecue season is just around the corner, although I’m not sure how a vegetarian tackles it. Guess I’ll ask my daughter.
Enjoy!— Robb Murray, Associate Editor, Mankato Magazine

work: You select a juice flavor and they add spinach and your choice of a protein, seeds or fruit. Their signature Smoothie Bowl is similar to a yogurt parfait: Select a flavor, add granola and choose three toppings (roasted sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, salted pecans, walnuts, seasonal berries, pineapple, shredded coconut). It’s beautiful and silky smooth and tastes like a dream. But it’s 100 percent good for you. How’d they do that?
The juice machines are also great at pressing nut milks, so look for freshly squeezed almond milk, almond-cacao milk and a to-die-for chai-cashew milk. And there are hot coffees and teas galore. In the grab-and-go section you’ll find salads, wraps, quinoa bowls, hummus, energy poppers, parfaits and desserts.
Mankato Magazine talked with longtime-juicer/owner Kristi Schuck who, with business partner Marie Farley Christiansen, felt that the time had come for a cold-pressed juice bar to thrive in Mankato. And thrive it has: They’ve had to stay juicing 24 hours a day to keep up with the demand.
“Both Marie and I got into juicing and nutrition because of health crises with our husbands being diagnosed with cancer,” Schuck explained. “Our journeys with them through cancer were so enhanced by nutrition and watching them thrive. Both our families embraced juicing. We just live it.”
The two met last year as LiveStrong instructors at the YMCA, a program to help cancer survivors regain their strength, and decided to share their juice passion with the community.
The shop has been busy with folks coming in to check out the highly visible corner location of Cherry and South Second streets. “It’s been beyond our wildest dreams,” Schuck said. “We have the most grateful hearts!”
One of the best parts has been seeing local youth frequenting the store. “And they’re bringing their parents!” Schuck said. Mankato has some pretty smart kids, apparently.
And if you’re a home juicer, it’s always nice to have a place to run to when you need a respite, Schuck added. “You deserve a break from juicing, too.”
