Segregation on History ● Civil war: Northern States vs. Southern

States due to the conflict of the abolishment of slavery.

● Northern States won and 14th amendment was passed and slavery finished.

Separate but equal ● This legal doctrine meant that colored people

had the same rights but they couldn't mix with white people.

● Really, colored people were treated as if they were a lower class.

Non-conformist ● Silent Parade in 1917: movement protest the

violence on anti-black riots in Illinois ● Bus boycott in 1955: protest the segregation in

public transport. ● Washington March in 1963

Standing up by sitting

● Rosa Parks refused to leave her seat to a white man and she went to jail.

● Civil rights demonstrators started a bus boycott that lasted 381 days.

Step by step ● Because of these movements, the Supreme

Court declared the segragation in public transport unconstitutional.

● This was an important steps to reach equality, regardless color.

Discovering a national hero

● He was born in January,15 1929 in Alabama, on the southeast of the United States

His models ● He was the first son

of Martin Luther King Sr and Alberta Williams King. His father was a baptist

pastor and his mother was schoolteacher.

Living segregation ● In his youth, he

experienced the segregation himself.

● At six , two children told him that they couldn’t play with him because he was

colored.

Formation ● He started school at

5, at 18 he entered at Morehouse College. He studied theology

and sociology. He also obtained the doctorate in Philosophy.

Baptist Minister ● In 1954, he became

pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist

Church in Montgomery,

Alabama. ● He's been always a strong fighter for civil rights for members of

his race

August 28th, 1963 ● I have a dream that

my four little children will one day

live in a nation where they will not

be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their

character.

April 3rd, 1968 ● Because I've been to the mountaintop.

I don't mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life; longevity has

its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will.

And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And

I've seen the Promise land.

King and Gandhi ● He fought for the

human rights. He inspired in Mahatma

Gandhi and about the civil disobedience

of Henry David Thoreau.

Enemies ● Because of the

Boycott, the situation became so tense that King's

house was bombed. He was arrested during

this campaing.

Shotdown ● At 6:01 p.m., April 4, 1968, a shot rang out as

Martin stood on the motel's balcony. His

murder was James Earl Ray, a white segregationist.

Nobel Peace Prize ● On October 14, 1964, King

became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize, which was awarded

to him for leading non-violent resistance to racial

prejudice in the U.S

Leaving a mark ● After Martin

Luther King's death many people were

shocked and blacks started riots in many

American cities. ● Nowadays, colored

people live in complete equality.

MLK day ● Martin Luther King

Jr.'s day is celebrated to honour this

national hero and the labour he did fighting for Civil

rights and equality.
