The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Program Coordination conducted a national survey via Google Forms aiming at collecting information regarding the impact of the program among MLK alumni nationwide. It focuses on their current academic and professional status, as well as on their participation in leadership initiatives and community service experiences after their graduation.

This survey was sent to 725 former MLK fellows who have participated in the program since it started to be implemented in 2006, and until the very last cohort that graduated in 2020 and

2021 in the cities of Apartadó, Barranquilla, Bogotá, Buenaventura, Cali, Cartagena, Medellín, and Quibdó.

The analysis shown in this annex provides information based on the 380 responses collected from March to May 2021. Likewise, this information is presented in seven different sections: Personal information, higher education opportunities, Fulbright opportunities, community service, leadership, academic opportunities overseas, employment-related information, and program impact.

The following graphics show information about the cities where participants completed the program and the year when they graduated. Historically, the cities with more graduated MLK students per cohort have been Medellín and Cali. Consequently, these two cities register the highest participation of respondents. Opposite to it, Buenaventura and Quibdó show a lower percentage of participation, perhaps due to internet connection constrains in the regions where these two cities are located

Likewise, most students who responded to this survey graduated between 2018 and 2021. Three cities were incorporated to the program during this period: Bogotá, Buenaventura and Apartadó.

As shown in the graphic below, 287 former MLK students hold undergraduate degrees, while the other 93 students have already completed postgraduate programs; 23 of them have studied specialization programs, 36 have obtained a master’s degree, five have studied a PhD, and 29 have completed different graduate certificates. It is worthwhile to remark that a big portion of the survey participants, 80 of them to be exact, are alumni who completed the program in 2020-2021, which means that most of them have not finished their undergraduate program yet.

As for the last section of this survey, former MLK students were given an open-ended question to describe how their participation in the program had contributed to achieving their academic and professional goals. The answers obtained constitute evidence of how meaningful the leadership component was in helping students become more active members in social and cultural contexts, by creating and participating in social initiatives to address issues and problematics faced by vulnerable communities.

“The Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Program has been and will always be a great tool for my professional and personal development. The opportunity I had being a beneficiary of this program has allowed me to become a leader, I learned to work in a team, to work in pro of the development of my community and I also got to connect my passions on one side, architecture, and helping my community on the other side. Thanks to this I now have this sense of social responsibility of helping others, and I look for helping my community with each of the projects I carry out, I foster their participation in all the processes because everything goes around them, anyways.”

Yeison Andrés Mosquera Mosquera. Former MLK fellow from Quibdó, cohort 2017.

Likewise, the answers collected show a positive impact of the program in the academic and professional development of all respondents, former MLK students have described the academic component as an effective and constructive process that has provided them with the tools required to access better study and job opportunities in Colombia and abroad.

My participation in the program has contributed to applying the knowledge acquired in leadership in my organization. I have got to boost the internal processes of the group so that last year (2020) I won a grant from the Ministry of Culture. Thanks to this benefit we worked on a very valuable research process with the indigenous community Embera Chamí from Karmatarua. Likewise, my studies in English have been considered when participating in the labour market.

Marisol Calambás Soscué. Former MLK student from Medellín, cohort 2012-2013

Page 13: MLKMARTIN LUTHER KING JR

Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship Program changed my life. Participating in this program made it possible for an Afro-Colombian woman from the department of Chocó, like me, to study a master’s program in the United States and to graduate with a PhD in Sociology at 25, returning to her country to create a research center in the fields of the African diaspora and to be currently starting a postdoctoral position at Harvard University. This program shows society how much a person can do when they are offered this kind of opportunities. Thank you to all the team that made and keeps making education possible for people with life trajectories like mine. The legacy you leave in our lives is immense. Thank you for contributing to the equity and social justice with this type of initiatives.

Aurora Vergara Figueroa. Former MLK fellow from Cali, cohort 2007

I keep promoting projects from AfroBello, the organization I have belonged to even before joining the program. Currently, I oversee shipping processes of COVID vaccines from North America to South America in an airline. This would have not been possible without the English component from the MLK program.

Jadith Guevara Moreno. Former MLK fellow from Medellín, cohort 2017-2018

According to the information collected from this survey, the program has had a positive and significant impact in the participants’ academic and professional development. The academic component has become an important tool and platform for MLK fellows to be able to access scholarship and internship opportunities in Colombia and abroad, allowing them to obtain graduate and postgraduate certificates that have taken their carrier plans further. As previously mentioned, the language component has highly benefited MLK fellows in terms of study and job recruitment processes; many former MLK fellows currently hold bilingual positions in the fields of education, marketing, and management.

13

Page 14: MLKMARTIN LUTHER KING JR

14

Likewise, it is essential to highlight that the leadership component has had a meaningful and substantial impact among former MLK fellows and their communities. This component served as a first step for many MLK alumni to undertake social initiatives to better the quality of life of their own communities.

The National Coordination of the program has made a special effort to build a solid alumni community by sharing information about academic and professional opportunities via email and social media, and by inviting them to actively participate in different local and international academic events.
