    WEEKLY NOTESINTERNATIONAL CALLUPS

Sounders FC announced today that three players are being called up to for international duty: Xavier Arreaga (Ecuador), Raúl Ruidíaz (Peru) and Gustav Svensson (Sweden). The call-ups coincide with Group Stage matchups in the Qualifying Round for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Arreaga continues his recent stretch of national team appearances for Ecua-dor, having been first called up for a friendly in 2018 and tallying six caps to date. La Tricolor takes the pitch for its qualifying match against Argentina on October 8 before hosting Uruguay on October 13.

Ruidíaz, Sounders FC’s leading goal-scorer on the season, gets the nod for a pair of qualifying matches. Peru will first face Paraguay this Thursday, October 8, followed by a matchup against Brazil on October 13. Ruidíaz previously has 43 caps for La Blanquirroja dating back to 2011, getting 17 starts and scoring a total of four goals in the process.

Svensson rejoins Sweden, where he has 28 caps and was a part of the team’s quarterfinal run during the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Sweden faces off against Russia on Thursday, October 8 in a friendly before UEFA Nations League fixtures against 2018 World Cup runner up Croatia on October 11 and Portugal on October 14.

    LEIWEKES JOIN OWNERSHIP GROUP

Seattle Sounders FC on October 5 announced the addition of Tod and Tara Leiweke to the club’s Ownership Group. The Leiwekes join the Rave Green’s Seattle-focused family of team owners, bringing their rich knowledge and experience from the world of professional sports, as well a special passion for the greater Seattle community and Puget Sound region.

No stranger to the Emerald City, Leiweke’s roots in Seattle sports run deep. The St. Louis native led the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks from 2002-2010 as Chief Executive Officer, during which time he spearheaded the re-invention of the “12s” concept, still celebrated and synonymous with Seahawks support across the globe. Leiweke also oversaw Sounders FC’s expansion into MLS in 2009, helping the club make its wildly successful jump into the top tier of American soccer.

Following his first stint in Seattle, Leiweke served as CEO of the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning from 2010-2015 before joining the National Football League as Chief Operating Officer, the righthand position to Commissioner Roger Good-ell. Leiweke returned to the Pacific Northwest in 2018, hired to serve as CEO of the then-unnamed Seattle NHL expansion franchise.

Now dubbed the Seattle Kraken, Leiweke is set to lead Seattle’s newest pro-fessional sports team as it hits the ice in 2021. Alongside wife Tara, the sea-soned sports executive further deepened his Seattle sports roots earlier this year when deciding to rejoin Sounders FC, this time in an ownership capacity.

“As a family, we have been privileged to enjoy an incredible journey through the professional sports world, but anyone that knows us understands that Seattle is home, and our fondness for Sounders FC runs deep,” said Tod and Tara Leiweke. “Our friendship with Adrian dates back to a time when the idea of launching Sounders FC in Major League Soccer was just beginning. The launch of the club was a truly special moment in our lives, and seeing the organization thrive from the very beginning is something we take a lot of pride in. In our time away from Seattle, we always followed this great club, and to be able to return to it now is significant for us.”

With their previous experience assisting Sounders FC in its initial launch, the Leiwekes have a strong foundational knowledge of the club’s close ties to the community and its fans. They join the rest of the Rave Green’s ownership contingent with a passion for continuing to build a successful franchise that represents the city and wider region.

Last summer, Sounders FC announced the addition of 11 families to the team’s Ownership Group. The new investors were led by former Microsoft executive Terry Myerson and his wife Katie, and included Seattle icons such as Ciara and husband Russell Wilson, Macklemore and wife Tricia Davis, and many more, creating a diverse roster of partners with direct ties to Seattle and a wealth of experience in sports, entertainment, technology, broadcast, finance and beyond. Following that initial news, the club then announced the addition of a 12th family to the Ownership Group, as current President of Business Operations Peter Tomozawa and wife Donna LeDuc officially joined the organization.

The Leiwekes join this group of diverse partners, adding to Sounders FC’s longstanding ownership contingent of Adrian Hanauer, Lenore Hanauer, Drew Carey, Jody Allen and Paul Barry. More information on the club’s full Owner-ship Group can be found via SoundersFC.com.

LAST MATCH AT RSL (9/2/20)Playing its first road match since the MLS is Back Tournament in Orlando, Sounders FC earned a point in a 2-2 draw at Real Salt Lake on September 2 at Rio Tinto Stadium, with Nicolás Lodeiro and Yeimar Gómez Andrade scoring for the visitors.

Lodeiro put the visitors up in the 29th minute via penalty kick, converting his chance past RSL goalkeeper Andrew Putna for his second goal of the season. Moments earlier, RSL was whistled for a hand ball inside the area attempting a clearance.

After RSL equalized in the 50th minute via defender Justen Glad, Yeimar gave Sounders FC the lead less than 20 minutes later with his first goal in Rave Green. Alex Roldan provided the service, beating a RSL defender on the right flank and finding Yeimar at the far post for a header. The home side equalized again in the 85th minute, earning a point for RSL and snapping Seattle’s three-match winning streak in regular season play. Follow-ing a corner kick, Pablo Ruíz collectied the clearance and smashed a bending ball from 25 yards out that took a deflection and found its way past Stefan Frei.

    SMITH RETURNS TO SEATTLE

Sounders FC on September 17 announced that it has signed defender Brad Smith. The Australian returns to Seattle after making 35 MLS appearances (in-cluding postseason) for the Rave Green from 2018-2019, tallying eight assists and helping the club to the 2019 MLS Cup title. Smith made his 2020 MLS debut as a substitute in last week’s 3-1 road win over the LA Galaxy.

Smith started 32 of his 35 MLS appearances (including postseason) with eight assists for Sounders FC in his time with the club on loan from August 8, 2018 through the 2019 season. After recording one assist in six matches during the homestretch of the 2018 campaign, Smith ranked third on the team with six as-sists in 25 regular-season appearances (22 starts) in 2019. He then started all four of Seattle’s postseason matches, including the club’s 3-1 win over Toronto FC to claim the 2019 MLS Cup. Smith’s loan concluded following the 2019 MLS campaign and he returned to AFC Bournemouth, where he was loaned to Cardiff City for the remainder of the 2019-2020 English Championship season.

Smith has 22 caps for the Australian National Team, including a pair of appear-ances in 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifying. After making his senior debut in a 2-0 loss to Belgium on September 4, 2014, Smith made 12 appearances for the Socceroos in 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying. The son of English parents, Smith played extensively at the youth levels for England, including represent-ing the England U-17 side at the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup.

    SEATTLE TRADES FOR TORRES

Sounders FC on September 28 acquired defender Román Torres from Inter Miami CF in exchange for a conditional first round selection in the 2021 MLS SuperDraft. The Panamanian returns to Seattle after making 80 appearances (including postseason) for the Rave Green from 2015-2019, helping the club to three MLS Cup appearances and two titles. Torres can join Sounders FC in training and matches upon completion of any mandatory quarantine period under local government and MLS health and safety protocol.

Torres made 80 MLS appearances (including postseason) for Sounders FC from 2015-2019, as the club captured three Western Conference champion-ships and two MLS Cup titles. He started and played every minute of the Rave Green’s three MLS Cup appearances and scored the match-winning penalty in 2016 MLS Cup against Toronto FC. In his 80 MLS appearances, Sounders FC held a 45-18-17 record, including a 11-2-1 mark in the postseason. Torres has started four of his five appearances this season with Miami.

Torres originally joined the Rave Green in 2015 following 11 professional seasons in South and Central American topflight football, including nine campaigns in Liga Àguila, Colombia’s top division. Prior to his time in MLS, the Panama City native amassed 331 career appearances and 32 goals dating back to 2004. A three-time Liga Àguila champion, Torres won 2010 and 2011 Apertura championships with Atlètico Junior and Atlètico Nacional, respec-tively, before leading Millonarios to the 2012 Clausura crown. After beginning his career with hometown side Chepo FC in 2004, Torres moved to fellow Panamanian club San Francisco FC in 2005, winning a pair of Panamanian First Division titles before transitioning to Colombia in 2006. A longtime captain of the Panamanian National Team, Torres has 119 career international caps since his debut in 2005. His historic 88th-minute match-win-ning goal against Costa Rica in a FIFA World Cup Qualifier on October 17, 2017 clinched Panama’s first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance in 2018, where Torres captained and started every match. Torres featured for Los Canaleros in seven Concacaf Gold Cups (2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2019) and was a member of the squad that won the 2009 Copa Centroamericana and finished runner-up in 2007.

    WEEKLY NOTESSOUNDERS ON PRIME VIDEO

In a groundbreaking media rights agreement, Sounders FC and Amazon Prime Video on August 18 announced a new deal that sees the iconic Seattle-based brand become the official video streaming partner of the Rave Green. Prime Video is now the sole digital streaming destination for all non-nationally tele-vised Sounders FC matches throughout the club’s home broadcast territory, marking just the second time Prime Video has reached a streaming agreement with a sports franchise, and the first deal with a professional soccer club. Starting with Sounders FC’s August 26 match at the LA Galaxy, the three-year agreement is set to run through the 2022 Major League Soccer season.

“At Sounders FC, we often refer to ourselves as a family, and that notion extends to the greater Seattle community. When I think about our hometown, few brands are as closely associated with Seattle’s sense of innovation and ingenuity as Amazon,” said Sounders FC Owner Adrian Hanauer. “This is a proud day for our club, as we’re now able to bring our fans Sounders FC matches on the world’s premier video streaming service through a company that is synonymous with our city’s culture. On behalf of our organization, I am thrilled to welcome Amazon and Prime Video to the Sounders family.”

With the 2020 MLS regular season resuming, all regionally televised Sounders FC MLS matches will now be available on Prime Video with a Prime mem-bership. Sounders FC’s regional broadcast territory extends throughout the entirety of Washington State - inclusive of the traditional Seattle-Tacoma-Ever-ett television DMA and key population centers like Spokane, Yakima, Tri-Cities and Vancouver, Wash. Simply put, fans everywhere in the Evergreen State are now able to watch the Rave Green via Prime Video. Fans can watch at home or on the go across hundreds of compatible devices, including smart TVs, mobile devices, Fire TV, Fire tablet, Apple TV, Chromecast, game consoles, Comcast X1, or from the web. JOEtv continues to be the regional television home of the Rave Green, alongside radio partners Sports Radio 950 KJR AM and El Rey 1360 AM.

Joining Prime Video’s robust collection of Amazon Originals, TV shows, mov-ies, sports and more, Sounders FC is the first team with club-specific content available via their dedicated team page, which will house live and archived regional Sounders FC matches, highlights, player interviews, press confer-ences and more.

    RAVE FOUNDATION TEAMS WITH STORM

On Thursday, September 3, at 10:00 a.m. PT, Seattle Sounders FC’s charita-ble arm, RAVE Foundation and the Seattle Storm, together with the City of Des Moines, hosted a virtual grand opening celebration for the newly completed mini pitch and basketball court at Midway Park.

Des Moines Deputy Mayor Matt Mahoney was joined at Midway Park by repre-sentatives from Sounders FC and the Storm - including former Sounder Lamar Neagle - where the group addressed the Des Moines community via Zoom. Neagle was joined by a selected few local youth to take part in the ceremonial first goal kick and first basket.

Announced earlier this summer, the multi-purpose recreation space at Midway Park is a donation to the community from RAVE Foundation and the Storm, with generous support from Symetra Life Insurance Company. Together, the trio collaborated to invest in this new court intended for free play, meaning that the courts are unrentable by groups or teams, ensuring they remain open at all times for the communities they serve. Situated just east of Pac Highway in a green space desert, Midway Park provides a crucial safe place to play for nearby youth. The new dual soccer and basketball court will be free to all who visit and serves to inspire play and community pride. More information can be found at RaveFoundation.org/Midway. Sounders FC and the Storm are members of the King County Play Equity Coa-lition, which is aimed at bringing access to sports and recreation regardless of zip code, language or race. The King County Play Equity Coalition was formed in direct response to results of a 2019 study by the University of Washington’s Center for Leadership in Athletics, in partnership with King County Parks and The Aspen Institute, which found that less than 19 percent of young people in the region get the amount of physical activity recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Coalition is committed to implement the report’s recommendations to remove barriers to physical activity for more kids throughout King County.

Now completed, the court includes specially designed soccer goals and bas-ketball backboards, with artwork that was contributed by students at Midway Elementary as part of a virtual Goals & Hoops For Art event earlier this year. Sounders FC Brand Ambassador and former player Brad Evans and Seattle Storm Associate Head Coach Noelle Quinn joined students as they put imag-inations to paper in the art event, led by Midway Elementary Principal Debbie Ellis and Highline Public Schools teacher Marianne Schneeman. The artwork from students was used to add bright and personal touches on Midway Park’s goals and hoop structures at the new court. Youth from the Midway commu-nity also participated in a virtual soccer and basketball clinic, hosted by Brad Evans and Seattle Storm’s Sami Whitcomb.

    “WE ARE ALL SOUNDERS”

On Tuesday, August 25, Sounders FC announced its ongoing commitment to substantive social justice and reform with the launch of We Are All Sounders, an official club framework, rooted in core beliefs and focusing on four core arenas of change, that is set to guide organizational action now and in the future.

In the wake of the important awakening that the past months have brought to the surface of the country’s collective consciousness, Sounders FC has dedicated itself on every level of the club to work toward change that will have a real and lasting impact. Players, staff and club leadership, together with community partners, spent time this summer discussing issues and how to position the Rave Green to be part of positive change.

The outcome of these discussions has been the development of an official social justice framework, We Are All Sounders, which focuses on four arenas for change: fight racism, defend the right to play, stand for LGBTQ+ equality and protect our planet.

Sounders FC is dedicated to remaining consistent and accountable to the com-munity as it follows this new framework, and, as such, the organization recognizes that much of the comprehensive work will take time and continued discussion and development.

However, the Rave Green are still eagerly taking action more immediately, with a focus in the coming months on encouraging action surrounding voting and the cen-sus as well as the work of RAVE Foundation, the team’s charitable arm, in service of BIPOC youth in historically marginalized communities.

The club is partnering with external local and statewide partners to collaborate with now and into odd-year elections, including Seattle Unite, the Washington Office of the Secretary of State, King County Elections and United Way of King County. Sounders FC will work with these partners, leaning on them for expertise in their areas while also utilizing the club’s platform for additional reach on these crucial topics.

Through RAVE Foundation, Sounders FC is focusing on assisting youth in BI-POC communities, where the systemic, intergenerational effects of racism have resulted in fewer safe places to play, making physical activity and healthy habits a challenge, and one that is further compounded by the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on these communities.

RAVE will open four new mini pitches in local BIPOC communities, removing barri-ers to participation by providing spaces for youth to play freely and safely.
