Mululmba. Chepareria, which is about 100 Km

from Kitalke town and St. Peter’s Lorugum

Parish which is situated about 60km from

Lodwar town. The Chairman of the Community

is Fr. Dharmu Daniel who was re-elected on the

15/10/2016. The Community comes together in a

rotational mode, three times a year. They discuss

issues affecting their specific parish

communities, express their suggestions to the

Regional Council, and encourage one another

through advice and celebrations. This year they

met at. Peter’s Lorugum, Parish and they were

hosted by Frs. Ephrem Kway and Rayappa

Gumala. We wish to thank the hosting fathers for

they made the desert look like any other place.

Present in the Community meeting were Frs.

Pascal, Amal, Dharmu, Rayappa, Ephrem and

Thaddeus.

Ngong-Nairobi SMA Apostolic Community

Ngong-Nairobi SMA Apostolic Community

comprises of St. Monica, Nonnkopir, Kitengela

Parish, Mary Mother of God Catholic Parish, and

St. Joseph’s Jericho Parish. It also brings

together, Great Lakes District-in-Formation

(GLDF), the Regional House, the Formation

House and Shalom Centre for Conflict

Resolution (SCCR). The Regional House is

situated along Bomas-Rongai Road, while the

Formation House is situated along Bomas-Karen

Road, opposite the Catholic University or the

Apostles of Jesus Shrine. Some 8 kilometres

from the Formation you will find the Great Lakes

and four Kilometres from Great Lakes you will

find Mary Mother of God Embulbul Parish.

Shalom Centre for Conflict Resolution is found

in Westlands near the Roundabout. The Ngong-

Nairobi Apostolic Community meets rotationally

three times a year. This year they met at the SMA

Regional House in which they elected Fr.

Bernard Asuka SMA as the new Chairman taking

over from Fr. John Mwangi SMA. They also

elected Fr. Ashok Saminathan SMA as their new

Secretary taking over from Fr. Donald Mulenga

SMA. Among the issues they discussed include

updates from different ministries and missions,

sharing and encouraging one another. Present in

the meeting were Frs. JeanBaptiste, Musa,

Thaddeus Mokaya, Ashok Sminathan, Mohan

Divya, Anthony Kelly, John Mwangi, Donald

Mulenga, Bernard Asuka, Edwin Mmasi, and

Deacon Hippolyte. Both apostolic communities

emphasized on the need to promote unity not

only in communities, but also among parishioners

especially when approaching 2017 elections.

Parishes

St. Peter’s Lorugum Parish

St. Peter’s Lorugum has been run by the SMA

Fathers for long. The current fathers are from

young entities of GLDF and India. Despite their

limited resources, they are making tremendous

impact on the locals. Thanks to the support

received from donors of different sources. Today,

the Parish enjoys continuous flow of Water from

boreholes and electricity from the County

Government. Recently, the just built guest-house

the Parish was opened by Bishop Kimengich.

Other initiatives taken by our confreres include,

building of the nursery school which will become

primary school in the near future in distant

villages. There are plans of opening a new Parish

Page 3: MMASI Edwin SMA · 2017. 1. 9. · Amal worked mainly with the youth and children. Up to the 30th November, we had Frs. Pascal Emong Ekisa SMA as the Parish Priest assisted by Amal

at Namoroputh, some 60 kilometres from

Lorugum towards Uganda-border. The presbytery

of 3 rooms, the Kitchen and the sitting room and

water tank are already constructed. Soon there

will be connection of electricity. We congratulate

Frs. Ephrem and Rayappa for their efforts and

pray that God may continue to strengthen them.

Despite the success, there are challenges of roads,

cars and upkeep as the local resources are

basically nothing.

Holy Trinity Catholic Parish Kakakemga

Holy Trinity was erected a Quasi Parish on the

17th

December 2013 pioneered by Fr. Pascal

Emong SMA as Parish Priest. After many

struggles in building the Church and the parish

community, they now have a beautiful Church.

They also have a beautiful presbytery with four

self-contained rooms. Further they have

responded to the Pope’s encyclical Laudato Si, of

the 24th

May 2015, by planting different types of

traditional /indigenous trees and grass. This has

spread to the surrounding communities who are

now engaged in caring for the environment and

keeping it clean. They also have small projects of

chicken and vegetables. Apart from that, Frs.

Pascal and Amal offer spiritual and pastoral care

to the parishioners. They have three major

Outstations which receive Mass every Sunday and

some selected weekdays. Fr. Pascal has been the

overall administrator of the Parish, while Fr.

Amal worked mainly with the youth and children.

Up to the 30th

November, we had Frs. Pascal

Emong Ekisa SMA as the Parish Priest assisted

by Amal Raj Lawrence SMA. After the end of the

First tour Fr. Amal Raj Lawrence was appointed

to St. Matthias Mulumba Parish in Kitale Diocese.

We wish God’s blessings and successful mission

in Chepareria and thank Fr. Dharmu for

welcoming him. The Council is still working on

the possibility of having a second priest to assist

Fr. Pascal soon. Some of the challenges spotted in

Soy Parish include limited resources to support

the upkeep of priests, water which is a major

challenge, and debts to the Diocese, and

personnel.

St. Mathias Mulumba, Parish, Chepareria

On the 14th

December 2016 Fr. Amal Raj

Lawrence left Holy Trinity Parish, Soy for St.

Mathias Mulumba Parish in Kitale where he was

warmly received as an assistant Parish Priest by

the Parish Priests and the Parishioners. Fr. Amal

was escorted by a big group of parishioners from

Soy. The Pastoral activities in Chepareria include

rural primary Evangelization especially at the out

stations. This parish covers quiet huge area. The

last out station is about 58 kilometres rough road

travel. This time they have been busy blessing the

primary and secondary school students as they

were preparing for exams. At this time there are

programs for young boys as they are initiated to

adulthood. The challenges for this parish include

personnel and upkeep for priests. Nevertheless

there are many pastoral needs like literacy and

catechesis. Baptisms take place every year and

still a good number is under catechism.

Polygamous marriages are also rampant making

it difficult for many good people to practice their

Christianity. Further it is a patriarchal society

where women have little or no say. They are

however, rich in love and care for their people.

Mary Mother of God Catholic Parish, Embulbul Mary Mother of God Catholic Church, Embulbul

Parish is located about 4 kilometres from Karen

and about 4 kilometres from Ngong Town. The

Parish was created by the SMA Fathers in 1997

and officially opened in 2003. Since 2013, there

have turbulence in administration, but since

2014, there seems to be some stability. The

Parish today is run by Frs. Ashok and Thaddeus

(recently appointed the Regional Superior of

Kenya). Administrative structures have been put

in place necessitating spiritual and developmental

services to the faithful. Masses are offered to the

main parish and the two outstations every

Sunday. Also Masses are offered to sisters and

parishioners daily. Developmentally, a perimeter

was just erected along the recuperated portion of

land. Further, the outstation, Our Lady Queen of

Peace has been built and was consecrated on the

18th

December 2016, by Bishop John Oballa

Owaa. On the same day, CMA was officially

welcomed in our Parish. Then, a tabernacle was

also purchased, fixed and blessed in the

Embulbul Church. Further a Church crucifix was

erected. The challenge is the financial constraints

and personnel.

St. Monica Noonkopir, Kitengela Parish

From left Fr .Bernard, Deacon Armad, The Regional

Superior of Kenya Fr.Thaddeus Ogato and Fr.Edwin

Mmasi

St Monica Catholic Church Noonkopir Kitengela

is under the SMA Fathers Bernard Asuka assisted

by Edwin Mmasi SMA. Kitengela Parish is not

far from Jommo Kenyatta International Airport.

Kitengela is a fast growing town in Kajiado

country under Ngong Catholic Diocese. The

Parish has a population of about 5000 Catholic

Christians. They have four masses every Sunday

at the main Church plus one mass at each of the 5

outstations. They have also morning and evening

weekly masses. As the population is growing, the

main Church is getting congested. As a result the

parish administration and the SMA Fathers

decided to put up a Shrine at Acacia called St.

John and Silvia. Plans are underway also to build

another Church at the Prisons area. Trip to

Komarock: The altar boys of St. Monica

Catholic Parish made a trip to Komarock on the

14th

December, 2016. The trip which was

organized by the Parish Priest Fr. Bernard Asuka

and their Patron Fr. Edwin was appreciated by

parishioners. Among the activities during the

visit were; the divine mercy prayers, the Stations

of the Cross and reciting

the Holy Rosary. The

trip inspired the

young who wished

to remain at the

spiritual site for some

time. The main

challenge for the Parish

of St. Monica is lack

personnel. The current

relief is received from

the visiting priests who

come from the Great

Lakes District-in-

Formation (GLDF) and

Page 5: MMASI Edwin SMA · 2017. 1. 9. · Amal worked mainly with the youth and children. Up to the 30th November, we had Frs. Pascal Emong Ekisa SMA as the Parish Priest assisted by Amal

other places. In response to our Charism, the

SMA Fathers over there conduct prison

apostolate; visit the sick at homes and hospitals;

and offer inclusive services to the mentally and

physically challenged. For instance sign-language

has become so meaningful for many.

St. Joseph’s Jericho Parish

St Joseph parish-Jericho - Nairobi, has come

along way. Initially it was in the hands of

Maryknoll fathers up to Year 1986 when the

diocesan fathers took charge. Later on the

Society of Divine Word (SVD) took charge until

1988. In 1992 the Parish was handed over to the

Society of African Missions (SMA) who are still

in charge until to date. The Father-in-Charge of

the Parish is John Mwangi Kuria SMA assisted

by Frs. Larence Ongoma SMA and Donald

Mulenga SMA. As the wise man says that "A

journey of a thousand miles must begin with a

single step", St. Joseph Parish-Jericho has

experienced great growth both spiritually and in

terms of structures. Today, thanks to the efforts

of parishioners who have made it possible to

progress in constructing a spacious chapel of

adoration. Further, necessary procedures are

underway in order to improve the only

kindergarten and primary School in the Parish.

For the time being, the parish hopes to capitalize

on the hard work and the generosity of

parishioners. Men and women of good are also

invited to come and sponsor these projects and

others in the pipeline. Thanks the predecessors,

the entire SMA confraternity and the parishioners

for the continuous support and encouragement.

The priests in the Parish have endeavoured to

nourish parishioners spiritually through the

different sacraments, the channels of life - giving

grace of Jesus Christ. They hope to continue

journeying together by sharing their talents, time

and energy. Merry Christmas and Happy New

Year 2017.

whom 11 are doing Philosophy Course and 22

are doing Theology. There are 11 nationalities in

the house currently. (4) from D.R.Congo, two (2)

GLDF, Karen

The Great Lakes District-in-formation held its

mid-mandate assembly from the 24th

- 27th

October 2016 at the headquarters in Karen. The

participants included Frs. Jean Baptist MUSA,

Superior of the GLDF, Julius Chelanga, Vice

Superior, Thaddeus Mokaya, the Regional

Superior of Kenya, Janusz Machota, the Regional

Superior of Tanzania, Ceferino Cainelli, the

Superior of Angola, Gustave Mukosha, the

Regional Superior of Zambia, Severin, the

Superior of Democratic Republic of Congo

(DRC), Pius Afiabor, the Regional Superior of

South Africa, John Dunne, the Moderator and

Rev. Hippolyte Buhika who was assisting at the

Secretariat. In his opening speech, Fr

JeanBaptiste pointed out the importance of the

assembly which was to evaluate the past three

years spent together and to plan for the next three

years to come. He also sketched out the basic

lines on which the participants were to focus

throughout the assembly. These basic lines are as

follows: Mission, Administration, Finance,

Spirituality and Lifestyle and Initial and Ongoing

formation. The moderator, Fr John Dunne, using

the image of the wheel, reminded the participants

that they were the centre-leadership of the

administration of the Great Lakes District-in-

formation, and that whatever they decide and

plan for is what is going to happen in the next

three years. Divided in two small working

groups, the participants came up with different

priorities mainly based on mission,

administration, finance, spirituality and life style,

initial and ongoing formation. To implement all

this, a great responsibility has been put on the

regional superiors who manage the day to day

life of the SMA in their regions. They are to

establish proper plans to ensure that all these

matters are implemented during the next three

years, and they are to see to it that the Great

Lakes District Superior is regularly informed.

Furthermore, there were some other important

issues which were brought out: the issue of

safeguarding children and vulnerable adults and

the issue of restructuring the administration in

Africa. On the safeguarding, it was unanimously

agreed that the District Superior and all the

regionals will ensure that the Safeguarding policy

is documented and implemented. On the

restructuration of the administration in Africa, it

was recommended that the GLDF Superior and

Council will initiate the consultation process;

they will also outline the method to be used and

the timelines to be followed during the

consultation process. Because, he explained, the

understanding of the SMA by other people

depends much on what they do and how they

shape their life as SMA leaders. In his closing

speech, Fr Jean Baptist thanked all the

participants for the work accomplished during the

assembly, and put an end to the mid-mandate

assembly 2016.

Project Centres

Shalom Centre for Conflict Resolution (SCCR) Shalom was founded in 2009 by Fr. Patrick

Devine, SMA, a priest with 25 years of

experience helping to mitigate conflict and

poverty in Africa. Since January 2016, Shalom

has been training the Kibera Influential Opinion

Shapers. The training has primarily been on

conflict prevention and management. The intent

of these series of workshops is to build the

capacity of the residents in managing impending

and even ongoing conflicts in places of residence.

These skills are timely especially due to the

upcoming 2017 general elections, which often are

characterized by political tensions. The training

culminated in the drawing of an action plan. The

group also agreed to contribute in eradicating

negative ethnicity and landlord-tenant conflict by

sensitizing communities through Pamoja FM, a

local radio station in Kibera. Other initiatives have

taken place at ASAL places of Kenya like among

Turkana, the Pokot and the Samburu areas. These

efforts aim at reducing or eradicating persistent

inter-ethnic conflict among the pastoralist

communities which has seen the loss of many

lives, destruction of property, abandoned

villages, loss of hundreds of livestock, insecurity

in the connector roads, disruption and closure of

schools, markets being inoperable and enormous

negative impact on development projects

initiated. Since 2013, SCCRR has been

intervening in this conflict area by equipping the

selected key influential community leaders, both

men and women, with analytical skills and

techniques of peace-building. These community

leaders have since become the pillars of peace

contributing immensely in making their

communities the architects and drivers of their

own destiny. Moreover, by recognizing and

acknowledging that peace and development are

inseparable, SCCRR has been supporting more

than ten inter-ethnic schools in this area by

supplying building materials, sanitary supplies,

access to clean and safe water, desks, tables, solar

panels, text books and other necessary learning

materials. This has gone further in promoting

and stabilizing the inter-communal learning

process in the area. In less than four years of

intervention, SCCRR’s effort has registered

significant results witnessed through increased

interaction between the two rival communities

from Tuum and Parkatti; operational markets;

undisrupted learning process in schools;

improved security and transport in the connector

roads; and the general de-escalation of inter-

ethnic raids and counter-raids between the two

communities. After taking the selected key

influential community leaders through a series of

intensive and progressive trainings over the last

three years, separately, SCCRR brought together

the nominated representatives for the first time in

a face-to-face community dialogue and trust-

building peace meeting in Tuum on 30th

November – 1st December 2016. The two-day

meeting was aimed at laying down the foundation

for the problem solving workshops between the

two communities from Parkatti and Tuum. Courtesy: http://www.shalomconflictcenter.org/seeking-peace-in-

Message from the Superior

General 5th

December 2016 Message for December

8th

, 2016. December 8th

,

2016 marks the 160th

anniversary of the

founding of the Society

of African Missions. On

that day Mgr Melchior

de Marion Bresillac, with his companions, went

to the Shrine of Our Lady at Fourviere, Lyon to

ask the protection of Mother Mary for his new

Society. We do well to remember that our

Society continues under the protection of Our

Lady. We do well, too, to continue on a daily

basis to pray through the intercession of Our

Lady that our Society remains faithful to the

Mission entrusted to it by God.

It seems needless to remark that the world has

experienced enormous and profound change in

Page 8: MMASI Edwin SMA · 2017. 1. 9. · Amal worked mainly with the youth and children. Up to the 30th November, we had Frs. Pascal Emong Ekisa SMA as the Parish Priest assisted by Amal

8

these intervening 160 years. Every part of our

world has experienced change and Africa is no

exception. Our Society, too, has been marked by

profound change. The early years of solid and

then rapid growth in Europe, followed by

extension into the Americas, has given way to

diminishment and ageing in these parts. Few if

any vocations are now coming from the older

Units of our Society. This is in contrast to the

rapid growth in membership in Africa, Asia and

Poland in these last thirty years. The active

participation in our mission by lay associates

from different Units is a welcome development.

Reflection continues on how we might best

develop a broad „charismatic family‟ for the

African mission. Our recent Assemblies have

pondered the question, does the SMA charism

remain valid in this very changed environment?

The best we can say is that the Assemblies have

answered with a tentative ‘yes’. GA13 noted,

“There is a lack of clarity and common

understanding of mission and charism in the

SMA”, and requested the Superior General and

Council to continue promoting reflection and

building consensus on SMA mission across all

Units/Regions. To this end the General Council

has planned that the year 2017 will be marked in

a special way by a Society-wide reflection on this

theme. This reflection should take impetus from

the SMA/OLA colloque at Nocetta in November

2016, where we teased out the common spiritual

patrimony of our two congregations during the

first fifty years of our existence. The year of

reflection will conclude with a seminar in which

members in different centres throughout the

world will react interactively on this theme.

[More information on this reflection process will

come in the coming weeks].

Towards this year of reflection and concluding

seminar we do well to recall again the words of

Pope Francis in Evangelii Gaudium.

222. A constant tension exists between

fullness and limitation. Fullness evokes the

desire for complete possession, while

limitation is a wall set before us. Broadly

speaking, “time” has to do with fullness as

an expression of the horizon which

constantly opens before us, while each

individual moment has to do with

limitation as an expression of enclosure.

People live poised between each individual

moment and the greater, brighter horizon

of the utopian future as the final cause

which draws us to itself. Here we see a first

principle for progress in building a people:

time is greater than space.

223. This principle enables us to work

slowly but surely, without being obsessed

with immediate results. It helps us patiently

to endure difficult and adverse situations,

or inevitable changes in our plans. It

invites us to accept the tension between

fullness and limitation, and to give a

priority to time. One of the faults which we

occasionally observe in sociopolitical

activity is that spaces and power are

preferred to time and processes. Giving

priority to space means madly attempting

to keep everything together in the present,

trying to possess all the spaces of power

and of self-assertion; it is to crystallize

processes and presume to hold them back

giving priority to time means being

concerned about initiating processes

rather than possessing spaces. Time

governs spaces, illumines them and makes

them links in a constantly expanding chain,

with no possibility of return. What we

need, then, is to give priority to actions

which generate new processes in society

and engage other persons and groups who

can develop them to the point where they

bear fruit in significant historical events

without anxiety, but with clear convictions

and tenacity.

Our task, then, is, over the course of the year

of reflection, to avoid the temptation to focus

Page 9: MMASI Edwin SMA · 2017. 1. 9. · Amal worked mainly with the youth and children. Up to the 30th November, we had Frs. Pascal Emong Ekisa SMA as the Parish Priest assisted by Amal

9

only on immediate problem solving to open

our minds and imaginations to new horizons

and new possibilities. In this vein, too, the

General Council is studying a different

approach to General Assembly 2019. The

approach is called affirmative discernment.

Broadly speaking, this methodology focuses

on the positives, the abilities, the gifts

available and the dreams rather than on

problem solving. Once the General Council

has studied it some more it will be in a

position to make a proposition to Plenary

Council 2017 for ratification or rejection.

A recent visit to our missions in Benin and Niger

convinces me that our charism remains valid. I

had the blessing of visiting all our missions in

Benin. There I witnessed our missionaries

struggling to evangelise the most abandoned,

often in contexts of extreme poverty and

heightened insecurity in an increasingly more

hostile Islam environment. I met also thirty five

young men at Centre Bresillac who wish to

dedicate their lives to mission ad extra. Why

would the Holy Spirit call such young men to this

vocation if the charism of SMA were no longer

valid?

Plenary Council 2016 made the following

statement: “At the heart of our missionary

activity, we find Africa and the people of African

origin. As mission in Africa is far from over, the

continent remains at the heart of our mission,

with still vast areas of primary evangelisation”.

In order to sustain our mission in areas of

primary evangelisation the PC agreed to establish

a new Mission Fund. This Fund will become

operational in 2018, and Provinces and Districts

are invited to contribute to it.

PC16 also noted that we also have mission

commitments in Units outside Africa. “We want

to ensure continuity of the SMA presence in these

Units and do mission with a style that is

particular to us”. We now have missionaries

from the younger Units working in all older

Units. Shortly we will open a new mission in

Maastricht, Netherlands, with one member from

Benin/Niger DF and one member from India DF.

The challenge is to ensure that the mission style

in all these newer mission is in line with the

charism of SMA. The opening chapter of our

Constitutions & Laws, quoting from the Founder,

states, “[we] use methods nearest to the simple

Gospel preaching of the Apostles while not

abandoning the folly of the Cross”.

De Bresillac faced many daunting challenges in

1856. His Society today faces different but no

less daunting challenges. We need to sustain the

growth of the younger Units while also doing our

utmost to sustain the SMA in our older Units.

This is not an easy task – balancing the needs of

one against the other, prioritising mission while

also ensuring resources are adequate to train new

members and to support Units who experience

increasing fragility. Bresillac was a man of

tremendous faith. We, the inheritors of his dream,

are called to approximate this level of faith in our

own lives and in our missionary vocation.

May this 160th

anniversary of our foundation be

the spur that pushes us to ever greater levels of

commitment to being “missionaries from the

bottom of our hearts”.

Vocations The Vocations is Kenya is booming so to say.

While challenges of determining which is the true

vocation in the society characterized by

unemployment and poverty, it is important to

note that many have demonstrated their call to

serve as missionaries. The accompaniment period

Page 10: MMASI Edwin SMA · 2017. 1. 9. · Amal worked mainly with the youth and children. Up to the 30th November, we had Frs. Pascal Emong Ekisa SMA as the Parish Priest assisted by Amal

for young men wanting to join the SMA ranges

from one to six years. Consequently, every year

we have three to six joining the preparatory

program. The categories range from students in

secondary school to the first degree in the

University. As of now we have 5 in secondary

school and 6 in the Universities who come during

the organised workshops. This year from the 14th

to 16th

October, we had for the first time a

workshop in the Most Holy Trinity Parish Soy.

We had five candidates among whom three are in

the University. This was to help aspirants to cut-

down costs of travelling. Fr. Edwin Mmasi SMA,

has just been appointed as the Vocations

Director. We wish him the best as he helps the

young to discover their vocation with SMA. The

offices and orientation program take place at

Embulbul Vocation Centre. Our formators from

the formation house come and orient our

aspirants for six months. There are other inputs

from different people during that time.

Nevertheless the major challenges for this

program are finance and full time Director. The

Region is struggling to pay the upkeep of

students, transportation and school fee. This has

constrained the exercise of recruitment and the

number of potential missionaries.

Mission Animation In Kenya we have six parishes three of which are

in the rural places. The most active Mission

Animation takes place in the three urban

parishes. The Parishes of St. Joseph’s Jericho and

Mary Mother of God Embulbul have had groups

of SMA Supporters for long. Recently, the three

parishes came together to launch another group in

St. Monica Kitengela Parish. Also there is a plan

having a single group for mission support in

Kenya while specific groups maintain their

identity. Their contribution has greatly helped the

Region to raise funds for the upkeep and part of

the school fees of the limited number of

candidates from orientation to 3rd

year

philosophy. We thank the SMA Supporters for

their generous participation in our missionary

activities. They also raise funds for our difficult

Missions in Kenya. Fr. Anthony Kelly SMA has

been appointed to accompany these groups. He

will be assisted by Fr. Edwin Mmasi to ensure

proper care attention to their operation. We wish

Frs. Kelly and Mmasi for accepting this task.
