Laila Biali is an award-winning Canadian jazz pianist, vocalist and songwriter who has toured with Suzanne Vega, Chris Botti and Paula Cole and recorded with and supported Sting. A Banff Centre alumna, she has been awarded a JUNO nomination for “2011 Best Vocal Jazz Album of the Year” for her latest studio recording Tracing Light, in addition to the “SOCAN Composer of the Year” and “Keyboardist of the Year” at Canada’s National Jazz Awards. Laila is also a member of the all-female New York-based neo-Classical crossover quartet Rose & the Nightingale whose members tour with Grammy award-winner Esperanza Spalding.

k.d. lang has won eight JUNO awards and four Grammy awards over her 30-year career. A recipient of the Order of Canada, an inductee in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, and a Banff Centre Fleck Fellow, lang has appeared alongside such musical luminaries as Tony Bennett, Roy Orbison, and Elton John. Her stirring performance of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” at the opening ceremony of the 2010 Olympics is now legendary. “She’s the best singer of her generation,” says Tony Bennett.

Indigenous Arts Residency: Renowned for her passion, commitment, and leadership in the arts, The Banff Centre’s Director of Indigenous Arts, Sandra Laronde is highly accomplished as a director, producer, choreographer, and creative leader. Along with top dancers from around the globe, Laronde will lead an innovative dance residency this summer, featuring the cutting-edge new Indigenous dance creation Backbone.

Classic Music Residency: Our classical music residents are among the most promising anywhere. They have been coming here for decades to access our distinguished faculty and collaborate on interpretation, creation and performance. Several talented pianists will be collaborating and performing for Ball guests as part of this years’ Midsummer Residency. Like so many of our alumni, their Banff Centre experience will be a catalyst for their artistic careers.

New Visions in Dance Residency: Emily Molnar is an internationally respected and critically acclaimed director, choreographer and dance artist, and has been appointed Artistic Director of Dance at The Banff Centre. Named The Globe and Mail’s 2013 “Dance Artist of the Year”, a graduate of the National Ballet School and a former member of the National Ballet of Canada, Molnar will lead some of Canada’s most interesting and versatile dancers in a Midsummer Residency that explores new ideas about dance creation and performance.

MIDSUMMER RESIDENCYThrough the Midsummer Residency, a number of artists will have the opportunity to spend time at The Banff Centre this summer and to perform on the Midsummer Ball Weekend.

12:30 – 5:00 p.m. Séance Fiction Walter Phillips Gallery May 2 – July 26, 2015

Nestled among common terms found in literature sits the imagined term séance fiction. This exhibition suggests “séance fiction” as a way in which to understand how artists act as mediums to the past and future. Inserting themselves into histories that are elastic, artists speculate on the past and future in a way that complicates the present. The works in Séance Fiction include stories, histories, correspondence or narratives that are real or imagined, conjured or summoned, fragmented or provisional. Artists include Hannah Doerksen, Maggie Groat, Tamar Guimarães with Kasper Akhøj, Soda_Jerk, Guy Maddin, Heather and Ivan Morrison, and Shana Moulton.

5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Visual & Digital Arts Social Jen Mizuik

Indulge in this delectable and eclectic social hosted by Jen Mizuik, Director of Visual & Digital Arts. We invite guests, artists, and faculty to enjoy a spectrum of artistic activity while partaking in light snacks and cocktails. Meander through open studios, sip whiskey from handmade ceramic cups, or warm up to the fire pit on the ceramics deck. Experience a retreat from the ordinary with a private viewing of Séance Fiction, the inspired group exhibition in the Walter Phillips Gallery, or even get your palm read. Take your time in this self-paced social before you make your way to Friday Night LIVE!
