Dear MMT Members and Friends,

“Another Opening, Another Show”…….

Can’t believe the shows are over and we are on to the next!

Well Done Everyone on the success of “Kiss Me, Kate”

and to the MMT Juniors

for their successful “Joseph” production!

“Kiss Me, Kate” We’ve had a great time making this show and the feedback from the public who kindly supported

us, is phenomenal. They are still talking about all the slaps and spanks, laughs and drama

exhibited on stage, much to everyone’s delight! Previously this was a relatively unfamiliar

musical amongst the town’s folk of Monmouth, but they were intrigued to find out what it was all

about! Based on Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew”, this play within a play, proved to be a big

hit with those who attended.

Jane Bryant, ably assisted by her husband Graham, skillfully directed the Monmouth Music

Theatre performances, as she enthusiastically participated in the chorus line up as well. Graham

took the male lead as Petruchio / Fred Graham and he proved to be an equal match for the fiery

Katherine/ Lilli Vanessi, brilliantly portrayed by our Chairperson, Andrea Pole. Well done to new

recruit Rachel Parker who won over the audiences as Bianca / Lois Lane in her debut

performance.

The comedy duo of Brinley Morgan and Tony Hardy (gangsters) just got better and

better……”heartiest felicitations” to them and Mr Gumpy! They had you “crying like a baby” at

their hapless antics. Nick Thompson played a great Bill Calhoun straight from the chiropodist

whilst Adrian Bevan proved to be “Too Darn Hot” as Paul, Fred’s dresser! Margaret is still

experiencing palpitations up her right leg!

If you ever need two Professionals, Bodie and Doyle look alikes, Jess Martin and Jess Netherway

are ready at your service! Likely to disperse any social gathering with revolvers at the ready! Just

run it past the General first though………….Tom Rigby may have exclusive rights to their

appearances! What a convincing Harrison Howell he was! Louise Miller not only shone as Sally

the stage Manager but she choreographed all the dance scenes most skillfully for our varied cast!

All flower girls, grape treaders, suitors, dancers, peasants…….played their part in the production

with enthusiasm but all would not have been possible without our loyal team of backstage crew,

lighting, sound, makeup, props, prompt, costumes, front of house and orchestra. Without every

single member of those teams and their valuable contribution we would be high and dry! They

are ALL integral to our success and the members are very grateful for their support, enabling us to

put on such a high rating performance.

Alastair Cameron led a fine orchestra. Lynda Foster as always the society’s “mission control”,

proved to be the most reliable commander, remaining ice cool through all adversities! I am

already missing those varied, amusing and unrelenting subject titles to the KMK emails!

Mr Richard Bond, ably controlled our Front of House with Dulcie and David Cantrell. Steve

Brettle’s expert team provided added entertainment with the complicated and sometimes

“unreliable scenery” changes which were extremely challenging for them this year to say the

least! Safe to say Graham has returned all stray knobs!

Our beautifully produced programme details all our acknowledgements, our committee, our

patrons and our gallant production team who made this show possible. Many thanks one and all.

We’re now……….“Off to see the Wizard”, via Penzance!

Message from Jane and Graham

“Kiss Me, Kate” Directors

Kiss Me, Kate

Gosh, ‘Kiss Me, Kate’ seems a long time ago, (and since then we seem to have been almost

constantly ill), but, actually, it is only 10 days since that great last night!

Directing is very hard work, with many hours of preparation going into rehearsals, staging

and performances, but directing MMT in this show was a joy, (as it was when we directed

‘It’s A Musical World’). This is a difficult show, both musically and dramatically, but every

member of the cast came up trumps! The chorus numbers were full of energy and you

made all Jane’s brilliant, sometimes whacky, ideas come to life, and all the principals gave

consistently excellent performances. Everyone who worked behind the scenes also played a

full part in ensuring that this show was a huge artistic success. And what can we say about

Alastair? It was a pleasure working with such an exceptional Musical Director.

Rehearsals were great fun, although much of the fun seemed at Graham’s expense,

(especially the slapping scenes!), and the performance nights were emotional as we watched

with pride all our ideas come to fruition. You are unique and we love each and every one of

you!

Till the next time...

Jane and Graham xx

Just take a look at the fab review below………………………..

MONMOUTHSHIRE BEACON REVIEW OF “KISS ME, KATE” (next week’s edition!)

Monmouth audiences were treated to a production of Cole Porter’s timeless musical ‘Kiss Me Kate’, the

latest offering from Monmouth Music Theatre, at HMSG over four nights last week. The show, which

follows the staging of a production of The Taming of the Shrew plagued by off-staged dramas, is widely

regarded as Porter’s finest, with equal measure of romance, conflict and comedy as well as an array of

memorable musical numbers, such as Too Darn Hot, Always True to You in My Fashion and Brush Up

Your Shakespeare.

The undoubted stars of the show were its two leading ladies, with Andrea Pole as Lilli Vanessi and

Rachael Parker, making her MMT debut as Lois Lane, showing incredible vocal and acting talent. They

were ably supported by the male cast, notably Graham Bryant as Lilli’s long-suffering (and much slapped)

co-star and ex-husband, Fred Graham; Nick Thompson as Lois’ love interest, Bill Calhoun; and Tom

Rigby as Lilli’s second husband-to-be, General Harrison Howell. Comedy was provided by Brinley

Morgan and Tony Hardy in the form of two hapless gangsters trying to reclaim a gambling debt and

ending up in Shakespearian costume.

The supporting cast all turned in excellent performances and the musical backdrop was provided by the

outstanding MMT chorus and an orchestra conducted by Alastair Cameron. The numerous dance routines

were choreographed by Louise Miller. The show was directed by Jane and Graham Bryant and stage

manager Steve Brettle and his team made sure everything ran smoothly off-stage.

MMT’s next production is Pirates of Penzance in September followed by The Wizard of Oz in April 2016.

MMT’s youth section will be staging Bugsy Malone in October.

For more detail please visit www.monmouthmt.co.uk.

7

Memorable KMK Moments for the Cast!

Andrea adlibbing so well when the door and knobs misbehaved! “Such a cheapskate theatre you’ve hired!” Cedric’s classic line “How goes it with my daughter?” Louise, Terry and Gareth miming to “Always True to You” in the wings! Alastair’s warm ups and an acting sitzprobe! Adrian cheekily sliding up Margaret’s leg in “Too Darn Hot”. Steve Brettle on headset giving calls 20 mins too early! Andrea hitting Graham so hard that his hat flew off! The bra attached to the sausages did it for me! Brinley losing his trousers and Gareth splitting his trousers on stage! Cedric with his upper plate wobble!

Sian on sound trying to tell the crew how to adjust corridor cloth…to the left, to the right….. and when the cloth got stuck and the crew had to hang on to it for ages before the end of the scene! Laughter! Both in rehearsals and on stage and the entire crew cutting some shapes at the very end on stage. We were all really going for it, great ending!!

All that slapping and spanking!!!! It was just “Too Darn Hot”!

A Few More “Behind the Scenes” Moments…..

News on the Street……………………………………

It is with regret that Alastair Cameron, our Musical Director, will be leaving us. He will be greatly missed by the society not only for his persuasive tactics in quelling the swelling noise levels in rehearsals but for his fun, humour, professionalism and dedication. Alastair appeared with us first as a member of the orchestra for “Me and My Girl”. He then became our piano accompanist when we performed “Trial By Jury – The Untold Story” followed by “Anything Goes”, “It’s a Musical World”, “Oliver!” and he also musically directed our last autumn show, “When Two Worlds Collide”. We thank him for his loyalty over the years and wish him well in his new venture in Hungary.

Dear All,

I'd just like to say a massive thank you to you all for an absolutely

fantastic show. It has been a fabulous week and every single member of

the cast and crew were brilliant.

It has been an absolute pleasure working with you all and MMT are a

fabulous society with a great deal of talent; I'm sure you will continue

to put on tremendous shows. I will miss you all and whilst I am very sad

to be leaving you, I am also immensely proud to have finished on such a

high note (both metaphorically and literally!).

I would also like to thank you all for the very generous gift, I was

very touched.

Thank you all once again, and if you ever find yourselves in Budapest be

sure to get in touch :-)

You are unique. I love each and every one of you.

Alastair

We are pleased to announce that Gareth Williams has agreed to become our new Musical Director for “Wizard of Oz” in 2016. We welcome him into his new role and look forward to working with him from October. We also welcome the return of Jane Rodgers who will stage direct this production. This autumn, we will be working with Ian Russell to stage a performance of “Pirates of Penzance” at the Savoy Theatre in Monmouth on 23rd – 25th September. Kate Downes will direct the rehearsals which commenced on Wednesday 29th April. We look forward to working with them both. Please bring along any scores you may have and join us on our next swash buckling adventure. “A rollicking band of pirates we, who, tired of tossing on the sea…. .”

MMT Youth’s “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor

Dreamcoat”

Well done to our MMT Youth!

What a fabulous show they produced in February – two performances

of “Joseph” at St Mary’s Church, Monmouth.

Andrew Griffiths (Youth Director) has found some

superb young talent, keen to complete all aspects of

stage design, painting and construction, programme production in

addition to acting/performing. All credit to Andrew on motivating these rising

stars! The roles of Joseph and Pharaoh were shared over the afternoon and evening

performances by Oliver Riba-Fookes and Harry Sully and Jacob King and Josh Morgan respectively.

Strong performances were also given by Jay Hardy as the Narrator/Potiphar and Josh Ellis as Jacob.

These leading principles were supported by an enthusiastic chorus. We look forward to their next venture!

NODA REVIEW OF “JOSEPH”

MONMOUTH MUSIC THEATRE YOUTH

JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOUR DREAMCOAT

ST MARY’S CHURCH MONMOUTH

MUSICAL

REVIEWED BY DEE Mc ILROY

21 02 15

DIRECTOR ANDREW GRIFFITHS

ASSISTED BY LIZ GRIFFITHS & JOSH MORGAN

The thirty young people who took part in Monmouth Music Theatre Youth production of Joseph and The

Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat had also taken part in the society’s production of Oliver They had

enjoyed the experience so much they had arrived at the adults Kiss Me Kate rehearsal with a desperate

request to stage a youth show! Top marks for persistence!

The dedicated and enthusiastic Andrew Griffiths took the challenge and his excellent production of Joseph

was the result and Monmouth Music Theatre Youth was born!

With help from everyone including all the youngsters and Christchurch Musical Society who travelled

from Newport, the show was on schedule and played to packed houses

With so much talent and enthusiasm the cast of Joseph have a dedicated team, the costumes were

incredibly well researched and created Headed by Oliver Riba Fookes and Harry Sully as Joseph both

giving excellent performances assisted by Pharoahs Jacob King and Josh Morgan with Narrator Jay Hardy

and Jacob, Josh Ellis who impressed with clear diction and good stage presence A spirited cameo

performance by Angus Keown Boyd as Benjamin The Ensemble moved so well skilfully dancing on

difficult levels

With Director Andrew Griffiths at the helm who deserves the accolades along with Liz Griffiths and Josh

Morgan and all who helped to make this possible a young company that will go from strength to strength.

12

Message from Andrew Griffiths Youth Director

What a day! What performance!

As I’ve been working with these youngsters for what seems a long time, it is easy to forget that “Joseph”

was our debut production and what a debut it was! A packed out church and a standing ovation -

something I haven't achieved in over forty years on an amateur dramatic stage.

My first thought on entering the church for a rehearsal on the Monday was, what a daunting venue this

was going to be but once the youth got over their surprise at being in a different venue they rose to the

occasion and filled the church with enthusiasm and skill.

There were some excellent performances. The part of Joseph can be a bit one dimensional at times but in

the talented hands of Oliver Riba Fookes and Harry Sully they demonstrated both the joyful and the

vulnerable sides to the character. The scene in the jail for both of them made the hairs stand up on the

back of your neck!

They were both ably supported by Jacob King and Josh Morgan as the Pharaoh. They gave very different

performances but showed what excellent entertainers they are. They are becoming more confident in their

singing and were excellent at bringing out the comedy in the role.

As the narrator, Jay Hardy had excellent diction and controlled the action with great maturity and Lydia

Harding was more than a match for the difficult part of Potiphar’s wife and showed what a good sport she

was.

Excellent cameos were provided throughout the cast. Josh Ellis seemed to be born to play Jacob, Angus

Keown Boyd was the “smiliest” Benjamin Canaan and Rebecca King and Beth Crossley performed with

skill as the Butler and the Baker, the latter overcoming nerves to give a great performance. My favourite

though had to be the hairy Ishmalites!

A huge thanks to Mary Morris for playing the piano. It is good to see her where she belongs, playing in a

Monmouth Music Theatre show.

Massive thanks to all the parents and adults who helped during this production, especially Liz. My final

thanks go to ALL the youngsters.

You did yourselves and your parents proud.

CONGRATULATIONS.

The Youth Team wish to thank Liz Griffiths, Eve Marie Bond and Myra Bowen for their

constant support Also special thanks to Mary Morris who is their accompanist.

Rehearsals take place at 7.10 pm for an hour and a half

on Monday nights

in the Methodist Hall, Monmouth.

Do you know any budding youth musicians wishing to join up?

MMT Youth is hoping to do “Bugsy Malone” with a youth orchestra.

Spread the word to those who may be interested in joining……………..

There’s no stopping these guys!

13

The youth group has continued to grow since “Joseph”. We did lose a couple of the younger boys who

have decided to take a break after the rigours of three shows in a row but the parents assure me they will

be back for “The Wizard of Oz”. Thanks to a recruitment drive by our older members, for which I am

grateful, we have attracted eight or nine slightly older girls and two boys from different ends of our age

range. One of them is a tap dancer - MMT ladies eat your hearts out!!

We welcome all these young people to the group. We are getting close to thirty members.

MMT Youth will be performing “Bugsy Malone” on Friday 23rd October (evening performance) and

Saturday 24th October (matinee and evening performances.)

Thanks to some excellent work from Rachel Sully, we will be performing in Monmouth Girls' School

which is really exciting.

We are hoping to use a small orchestra for the production of “Bugsy Malone” - you need to use live

musicians. We cannot afford to pay individuals but if you know anyone who will be prepared to play free

of charge please let us know asap. Mary has very kindly agreed to be our pianist.

I am pleased to say that Harry Sully and Josh Morgan have both agreed to build on their excellent

production skills with the former continuing his art skills and the latter his dance skills.

It is quite comforting as a producer that when you have production problems, you have two teenage voices

that invariably come up with a solution. We are hoping to extend this scheme to incorporate more

children. There has already been a positive response to this.

Finally, I want to thank member Vittorio and his family. His family is moving out of Monmouth and he

will be sorely missed from the group. A huge thanks to his mum Sarah who has been a really useful

contact in the Beacon Office.

Best of luck to all of you.

Andrew

Monmouth Music Theatre Youth Posted on April 20, 2015 by epicawards

An amateur group providing young people in Monmouth and district with an opportunity to take part in performing arts, giving them confidence and improving their stage craft

Monmouth Music Theatre and Monmouth Music Theatre Youth are amateur musical theatre groups based in

Monmouth. The Youth Group was formed to bring the performing arts to young people in Monmouth and surrounding area, giving them confidence and improving their stage craft.

Monmouth Music Theatre performed the musical ‘Oliver!’ in May 2014 and many young people enjoyed taking part.

Although the next production did not include young people in the cast, they were undeterred: they came along to

rehearsals to watch and expressed an interest in having a group of their own. Monmouth Music Theatre Youth was

formed to meet the demand.

The first rehearsal saw thirty young people turn up and the group has not looked back. Andrew Griffiths became

Director and they rehearsed at a local Methodist hall. The atmosphere at rehearsals and performances was co-operative, full of energy and encouraging.

Monmouth Music Theatre Youth performed their first musical, ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat,’ in February 2015.

It’s hoped that the group will also provide young people with further opportunities to take part in musicals, revues

and plays, giving them a chance to socialize and make friends and provide opportunities for them to take

responsibility for running their group. They have already taken responsibility for designing and producing posters and programmes and painting scenery for one production.
