ASPAN National Conference in Indianapolis was fabulous. We started our week out with a full day at the representative assembly meeting. It was here where Peggy Forstner, President elect, and myself were able to hear the latest news from the ASPAN Board. We heard candidate speeches and discussions on proposals for changes in the standards. It was truly the highlight of my week being a part of our national society. We attended the President’s luncheon and were honored to receive recognition for MNDAKSPAN’s 35 th birthday. There have been many changes for our component and best of all that we are strong and growing. Happy Birthday MNDAKSPAN! The component night was a fun time with many costumes and interactive tables. At this event, each component has a table and usually the focus is to sell raffle tickets for items that are from their home state. This year it was not allowed to sell raffle tickets as Indiana sees this as gambling. This forced many to find other fun ways to create an atmosphere of celebration. For MNDAKSPAN, we created a Jeopardy game that had five categories of questions: Minnesota, North and South Dakota and CPAN and CAPA questions. This was a big hit and we challenged many with some great questions. We even had some contestants return and compete in many rounds of the game. We awarded our winners a special black and white checkered bandana to get them into the Indy race car mood. ASPAN National Conference in Indianapolis was fabulous. We started our week out with a full day at the representative assembly meeting. It was here where Peggy Forstner, President elect, and myself were able to hear the latest news from the ASPAN Board. We heard candidate speeches and discussions

on proposals for changes in the standards. It was truly the highlight of my week being a part of our national society.

We attended the President’s luncheon and were honored to receive recognition for MNDAKSPAN’s 35th birthday.

For MNDAKSPAN, we created a Jeopardy game that had five categories

of questions: Minnesota, North and South Dakota and CPAN and CAPA questions. This was a big hit and we challenged many with some great questions. We even had some contestants return and compete in many rounds of the game. We awarded our winners a special black and white checkered bandana to get them into the Indy race car mood.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE (CONT.)

Spring 2017 Volume 44 Issue 2 2

The best part of the week was our MNDAKSPAN meet and greet dinner. There were about 20 of us that walked to the restaurant where we had made reservations several weeks in advance. As the leader, I can now chuckle but to tell you the truth when we checked in and they said to me that there was a mistake and that they were closed for a private event, I was freaking out! Yikes! Well it turned out that we were blessed by a sweet angel of a manager and he fixed us up. Let me tell you it was a true example of excellent customer service. He set us up to eat at the fine dining restaurant across the way, took care of ½ of our total bill and provided our group with 6 bottles of wine! We had a fabulous meal, all laughed and most of all made some great new friends.

Planning for our Fall Conference and getting our new board members up and running has been my focus now that the National Conference is done. As always there is room for you if you are hoping to get involved. We would love to hear from you!

MNDAKSPAN MEMBERSHIP (CONT.)

Greetings from the longstanding MNDAKSPAN member who was lucky enough to win $1500 towards attending the ASPAN 36th National Conference in Indianapolis, IN from April 30th - May 4th, 2017. There have been 5 nurses who have attended all 36 ASPAN National Conferences! I have attended 3 other ASPAN and 1 ASPMN (American Society for Pain Management Nursing) National Conferences. I love to learn…and when you're in a room with 1650+ perianesthesia nurses there is an energy and excitement instilled upon you regarding our

practice. It motivates you to be a better nurse, more specifically a better perianesthesia nurse.

There were times when I wanted to attend classes that were scheduled in the same break out sessions - so thank heavens many speakers had a complete outline available on the ASPAN website so I could get some of information presented. It was also fun to talk to other perianesthesia nurses throughout the country about their practice, what they are doing that is working well for them and to learn of opportunities on how we can all grow. I wished I would have scheduled some more time for sight seeing in Indianapolis. I did eat and experience the famous Saint Elmo's fire shrimp and sauce. Wow, where's the ice water?

We were encouraged to own a copy of the ASPAN Standards 2017-2018 book. We were asked if your place of employment has this book on your unit, have you read it and do you know what the ASPAN standards are? I was proudly able to answer yes to all three. Another book I fell in love with was the 2015 Redi-Ref for Perianesthesia Practices. It is the best condensed

perianesthesia pocket sized book every nurse can use. Also, we were all encouraged to get our CPAN and/or CAPA certifications. ASPAN has many resources available to support preparing for exams and to earn CEU's - some are online. Yes, they talked about text anxiety. I feel extremely blessed to be working in a Minnesota hospital that supports ASPAN standards and is represented by our MNA RN union - we have negotiated a $400 bonus for up to 2 certifications a year and some tuition/educational money for advancing our careers. Several nurses at the conference had a fully paid conference, hotel and flight, and paid education days by their employers. I wished more employers would support their employees this way. Are you an ASPAN and MNDAKSPAN member? Have you thought about attending the ASPAN conference and advancing your practice? I thank the MNDAKSPAN Board for supporting members to attend this conference. I look forward to attending more ASPAN seminars in the future. My only regret is not having attended more conferences in the past.

ONE MEMBER’S TALE……

ASPAN NATIONAL CONFERENCE

Opening Day at ASPAN’s 36th

National Conference

Spring 2017 Volume 44 Issue 2 7

One of the highlights of the

conference for me was the opening keynote speaker -Marcus Engel : The Other End of the Stethoscope (the title of one of his published books). He has a masters degree in narrative medicine. His Web site is narrativenursing.com. Narrative medicine is stories in healthcare. He encouraged us to write and journal. Marcus said “Simple human presence is the very foundation of our humanity". He talked about the 3 healthcare workers that made a huge difference in his life when he was in critical condition with a major facial injury that left him blind. His recollection of events, the description of the incredible care he received and his story were very moving. There weren’t very many dry eyes in the room. Marcus returned to college, has written several books, is an national speaker, started a 503-c,

got married a few years ago, has 3 teenage step children and a service dog. His newest book is "Everyday Inspiration" to be published soon. Marcus challenged us to ask ourselves - "What can I do so the patients and their families know I care?" In Marcus’ words—“give the gift of human presence".

Thank you again MNDAKSPAN for the ASPAN conference support.

MNDAKSPAN's quarterly newsletter, PAR EXCELLENCE, was recently presented the ASPAN Component Newsletter 2017 Contest award in recognition of outstanding presentation of information to our Component. We are truly grateful for

all the awesome article submissions, informative write-ups, and photos received that made this award possible. PAR EXCELLENCE has

been an evolving entity that has tried to give its members the latest news, relevant happenings, an all other interesting things in between--and even beyond. But, we can't stop there. PAR EXCELLENCE is about you! We want way more content from YOU the readers. MNDAKSPAN is currently looking for any "want-to-be" writers, former year book editors, poets, those hiding under rocks with creative ideas waiting to be unleashed, or whatever the case may be to contribute an article once or even articles on a regular basis. Let your voice be heard! BE THE NEWS!

WE WON!

ASPAN NATIONAL CONFERENCE (CONT.)

As another National Conference has come and gone, I am reminiscent of what an amazing experience it was once again. I am so grateful to have the privilege of attending an event centered around our nursing specialty while surrounded by so many talented leaders from across the country. Furthermore, it is such a great opportunity to meet up with many old friends and find some new ones along the way! This year’s theme for ASPAN’s 36th National Conference in Indianapolis was “Energizing Generations: The Race to Distinction!” …and energizing it was!

If you have not yet had the opportunity to attend a National Conference, I would highly encourage you do so. It is an experience that you will neither regret, nor soon forget. Next year’s conference will be held in Anaheim, California. I am already making my plans; it would be awesome to see you there too!

One of my highlights this year, as your Director of Certification, was to be able to attend the CPAN/CAPA Celebration Luncheon and receive the Shining Star Award on behalf of MNDAKSPAN! This award is offered to all components who meet eligibility requirements. This is the fourth consecutive year that MNDAKSPAN has received this award! It is evident that MNDAKSPAN holds certification in high esteem as two-thirds of our members hold CPAN and/or CAPA certifications (and that’s not to mention those who are certified in other areas)! As a component, we aim to support CPAN/CAPA certification by providing certification information and updates,

offering scholarships for certification/recertification fees, having Certification Coaches accessible, providing contact hours, and recognizing newly certified.

On that note…congratulations to all those who took their CPAN/CAPA exams this Spring! APBANC will soon release the list of all newly certified. These names will then be posted to our website and I will send out congratulatory letters shortly thereafter; so, watch your mailboxes.☺ The names of the newly certified will also be listed in the next issue of JoPAN. For those who may not know, the JoPAN (Journal of PeriAnesthesia Nurses) is our national journal which is published quarterly and free to all ASPAN/MNDAKSPAN members. This is just one of the many perks of being a member!

The next testing cycle will begin this Fall. Registration opens July 10th until September 25th. Then the testing examination window is October 2nd to November 20th.

GOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS

Happy belated nurses week to all of you. If anyone is interested, you can follow the link to view the video of Governor Mark Dayton’s proclamation proclaiming May 6-12 nurses week on the MNA website. (www.mnnurses.org)

The 2017 ASPAN National Conference in Indianapolis was full of opportunities to learn and network. This year I attended my first government affairs SWT group meeting (strategic work team). This is a team that meets annually at the national conference to discuss issues surrounding advocacy and nursing. We networked, discussed some current issues, and joined together on a group e- mail list that is headed and coordinated by Donna Goyer. I will be getting updates on current issues and events from this group that can be shared and passed along to MNDAKSPAN members as need arises. Recently an email was sent out from this group detailing issues and associated concerns with the proposed administrations budget. The resources are directly from The Nursing Community's website, who's purpose is to promote America’s Health Through Nursing Care (www.thenursingcommunity.org). This is in reference to the administrations budget blueprint released in March and the proposed cuts. The current budget proposal is suggesting cuts that affect the Title VIII Nursing Workforce Development Programs primarily. This is a program that was created over 50 years ago by President Johnson. The program funds institutions educationing nurses in rural and underserved communities. It provides for loan forgiveness for those willing to serve in these areas. Over the years Title VIII has invested in the nursing workforce to care for all Americans.

The current budget proposal recommends a 24% reduction in funding these programs.

The Nursing Community is busy on the Hill educating Congressional staff about the

importance of this program and they plan to continue to champion to fund these programs.

During this busy time I will be watching for updates from multiple websites and resources so we all can stay up to date on the changes affecting health care in this country. Enjoy the warmer weather, I feel like we deserve it.

Spring Update:ASPAN Region 3 DirectorSpring is always a busy time! We transition from cooler late winter/early spring to warmer breezes and longer days. We get geared up to clean cobwebs from corners of our rooms and minds after slowing down over the long winter months.

ASPAN has geared up too. National Conference was a resounding success (again!). Many components completed Gold Leaf Applications. Several members were acknowledged for going “Above and Beyond” as well as those applying for “Excellence in Clinical Practice” and “Award for Outstanding Achievement” awards. Component Night was fun as old friendships and acquaintances were renewed and other relationships initiated. It was a busy week! If you were not able to join us in Indianapolis this year, make plans to attend next year in Anaheim, CA. Start saving now!

ASPAN will be busy updating Standards and Policies throughout this upcoming year to keep us vibrant, geared up and growing (professionally and in membership). The Clinical

Practice Committee will be busy answering new questions posed by Perianesthesia nurses from across the country and globe. ASPAN’s Education arm is busy reviewing, updating and providing you with easier means of gaining the education that will keep you current: look at these offerings and take advantage of them. ASPAN’s Research Committee is busy moving forward on our work of acuity in perianesthesia practice: opportunities are readily available for you to take part in research that promotes and supports the care we deliver.

Thank you, to the RA and Board of Directors for the vote of confidence and a second term as your Regional Director. I look forward to the next two years so we can help ASPAN/MNDAKSPAN grow! I will be attending one of your meetings soon so you will have a connection to ASPAN.

One of the latest initiatives the RDs have undertaken is to develop presentations to provide Components during their meetings. I am happy to present at your meeting; your President/VP have information on this. We have three topics that virtually all perianesthesia nurses can relate to: “Obesity: Why Size Matters”; “How Easy Can Your Life Be? Using ASPAN Standards to Make it the Easiest”; and “ASPAN:101”.

Please let me know what I can do to promote you, your involvement and understanding of ASPAN. I am here for YOU!

Respectfully,

HEALTH AND HAPPENINGS

Spring 2017 Volume 44 Issue 2 14

HEALTH AND HAPPENINGS

While many people think that you need to eat a diet low in fat to lose weight or be healthy, this notion is actually false! The low-fat diet craze that started in the 1980’s caused food manufacturers to produce a variety of low-fat and fat-free foods… but we didn’t lose weight! In fact, our waistlines have been expanding ever since! Research shows that we need fat in our diet. The right kinds of fat can improve metabolism, reduce cholesterol, help you feel full, protect against heart disease, and allow your body to process certain vitamins. The following high fat super foods are packed with health benefits but remember… everything in moderation!

1. Avocado- protein, fiber, and antioxidants!2. Coconut- improves cholesterol, sparks your

metabolism (studies have shown reduced abdominal fat with the supplementation of coconut oil), and boosts immune system.

3. Whole Eggs- egg yolks can actually help reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol. They are also a good source of choline. This nutrient prevents the body from storing fat around your liver.

4. Nuts- reduce fat storage and improve insulin metabolism. While all nuts are good sources of healthy fats, walnuts and almonds are among the best.

5. Olive Oil- Studies show that diets rich in olive oil result in lower BMIs due to increased amounts Adiponectin, a hormone that breaks down fats in the body.

6. Flax and Chia seeds- an easy addition to yogurt or smoothies, these seeds help to maintain a healthy weight, reduce heart disease, and reduce inflammation.

7. Fish such as Salmon and Tuna- full of omega 3’s that can help prevent abdominal fat cells from expanding in size.
