ROD PATERSON: Rod Paterson is probably the finest Scottish folk singer of his generation, celebrated as a performer of traditional song, notably for his unequalled interpretations of the works of Robert Burns and the songs of Scotland generally. He has a marvellously expressive voice and is an impressive guitarist. He was first discovered in the ‘folk scene’ as the principal singer with Chorda, and Jock Tamson’s Bairns, and rapidly moved on to play with The Easy Club the most influential Scottish band in the mid to late eighties. He toured widely with Ceolbeg and is now also working with the re-formed Jock Tamson’s Bairns. Rod performs a wide range of material and is also a contemporary songwriter of considerable talent. . In 1999 they released a new single, Skatter Ik Ignito, as well as a split EP with labelmates Planes Mistaken for Stars and Race Car Riot; Mare Vitalis followed in early 2000, heavily showcasing Baruth's complicated beats and the band's overall dense, atmospheric sound. Despite the hints of a new direction, the album couldn't have prepared fans for the two Low Level Owl albums released in 2001. Complex, delicate, and highly experimental, these two records took a cue from Radiohead's Kid A and sent the band careening into space rock and electronica with only traces of emo poking through. The records weren't nearly as commercially accepted, but their overall bravery showed that the band was prepared to make stylistic leaps. June Miller is cinematographic dream state, soundtrack of landscapes that have no name. It is dense sound, yet rarefied - meteorology of consciousness, often cumulonimbus of rain and rage, sometimes a white stain stretched and floating the blue. Verse Metrics is a Glasgow-based alternative band. Stereo, 20 – 28 Renfield Lane, Glasgow. Time 7pm. Black Umfolosi 5, from Zimbabwe. The Rough Guide to Zimbabwe describes Black Umfolosi 5 as follows: "Their songs, sung in close, rich harmony, address general human concerns - love, family, spirit - as well as contemporary problems - wars, apartheid, the environment and AIDS. Their music is fresh and surprising, not only for the interesting text, but also for the typical intricate rhythms, unusual harmonies and interspersed clicking, clapping and shouting, which combine to produce a natural funky and rugged aura". The group, who are much loved around the world, offer their sweet sounds of acapella with marvellous harmonies and gospel singing, as well as captivating dancing including the gumboot dancing of South Africa. Black Umfolosi deliver their performance with fun and joyful enthusiasm. This bare-torsoed, hard-hatted group, never fail to captivate their audience and encourage them on to the stage to join in the performance. Birnam Arts, Station Rd. Birnam, Dunkeld.
