�A mobile phone (also called mobile, cellular phone, cell phone or hand phone) is an electronic

device used for full duplex two-way radio telecommunications over a cellular network of basestations known as cell sites.

surveys to keep the Mobile Phone Prices in India affordable to the mass consumers (mainly the

middle class) and luring to the luxury consumers (mainly the elite).

History

� The first handheld cellular phone was

demonstrated by Martin Cooper of 

Motorola in 1973, using a handset

weighing in at two kilos.

� In the year 1990, 12.4 million people

worldwide had cellular subscriptions.

By the end of 2009, only 20 years later,

the number of mobile cellular  

subscriptions worldwide reached

approximately 4.6 billion, 370 times the1990 number, penetrating the

developing economies and reaching

the bottom of the economic pyramid.

GSM

� GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications: originally from Groupe Spécial 

Mobile) is the most popular standard for mobile telephony systems in the world.

� GSM is used by over 1.5 billion people across more than 212 countries and

territories.

� GSM differs from its predecessor technologies in that both signaling and speech

channels are digital

� GSM is considered a second generation (2G) mobile phone system.

� GSM also pioneered low-cost implementation of the short message service (SMS)

� One of the key features of GSM is the Subscriber Identity Module, commonly

known as a SIM card.

CDMA

� CDMA phone uses a digital wireless technology,

which results in greater bandwidth capacity for

convenient roaming with the phone.� CDMA phone have a service provider locked

with the phone.

� Major players in this race of CDMA phone areTata Indicom, Reliance, MTNL, and BSNL.

� The Korean electronic giant Samsung has

retained the No. 2 position with a market

share of 8.2 per cent in terms of units shipped,

and 17.40 % share in terms of sales.

� Samsung offers 50 handset models in India.

Micromax as emerging player in

Indian market.� The New Delhi-based company

� Sells more than one million handsets a month in India's fast-

growing mobile market only two years after starting

operations.� Micromax, whose phones start at 26 dollars, has a 4.1%

share by revenue.

� It sells in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal and hopes to

expand to the Middle East, Africa and Latin America.

� About 80 per cent of companies' sales is driven by rural

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI)

� In telecom manufacturing sector 100% FDI is permitted under automatic

route.

� Inflow of FDI into Indias telecom sector during April 2000 to Feb. 2010 was

about Rs 405,460 million. Also, more than 8 per cent of the approved FDI inthe country is related to the telecom sector

� Mobile handsets account for 26 % of the total telecom equipment industry

in India.

� The shipments of mobile handsets in India grew by 6.3 per cent (QoQ) in

the, second quarter of 2010, ending June 30

� The mobile handset market grew 4.2 per cent by revenue during FY 2009-

10 compared to 7.9 per cent in 2008-09.

� Around 108 million mobile phones were sold in the country during 2009-

10, adding up to Rs 27,000 crore sales, up from Rs 25,910 crore the

previous year.

Akai Mobile phones make an entry in Indian

market 10 new models Latest News

� Akai India announced its entry in the Indian Mobile market

with the launch of 10 new mobile handsets with prices

ranging from Rs.1800 to Rs.8000.

� The price and range will appeal to consumers across all

segments, mainly youth and will be available across 8000

retail outlets in India. By September end, Akai India plans to

take the count to 20,000.

� Rs. 700 billion mobile handset market in the coming years.

� The company will have a centre to repair mobile chip in

Gurgaon, with an investment of about Rs. 5 crore to Rs. 10

crore.
