explorer check boxesIn earlier versions of Windows, it was difficult to select multiple files when using either a slate Tablet PC or a convertible Tablet PC in slate mode. Explorer check boxes now make it easier to select multiple files. When you hover over any set of files with a tablet pen, a small check box appears. You can select one or more files and then move, copy, or delete them as a group.

pen flicksWindows Vista enhances pen functionality by adding pen flicks. These are gestures that you can make with a tablet pen to quickly navigate and perform shortcuts.

panning hand in inTerneT explorerWindows Vista improves document navigation in Internet Explorer with a new feature called the Panning hand. Instead of using the scroll bar to page through a document, you can grab the page with the pen and move it directly. By using a button with a hand icon on the Internet Explorer toolbar, you can toggle between panning and text selection modes.

new Touch screen supporTIf touch input is available on your Tablet PC, you can use your finger to do many of the things that you do with a mouse or a tablet pen. For example, you can use your finger to browse the Web, control objects on the screen, and even write. You can also use touch flicks—gestures that you can make with a flick of your finger to quickly navigate and perform shortcuts.

To overcome the challenge of targeting small items or resizing windows with your finger, Windows Vista includes the touch pointer. This new feature consists of a left mouse button, a right mouse button, a drag area, and a pointer. While you’re using touch, this mouselike assistant floats on the screen just below your finger.

snipping ToolYou can capture a snip (or screen shot) of any object on your screen -whether it’s part of a website, document, or program. Using your pen, draw a circle, a rectangle, or a free-form shape around the object. You can then add handwritten comments to the snip and save it or send it in an e-mail message.

improvemenTs To TableT pc inpuT panelWindows Vista improves Tablet PC Input Panel, an accessory on Tablet PCs that enables you to use handwriting or an on-screen keyboard to enter text. You can use the writing pad or the character pad to convert your handwriting to text, or use the onscreen keyboard in the same way that you use a standard keyboard. By using Input Panel, you can enter text on your Tablet PC when typing on a standard keyboard would not be appropriate, such as in a meeting, class lecture, or interview.

auTocompleTeEntering URLs, e-mail addresses, and file names is faster and easier with AutoComplete, a new addition to Tablet PC Input Panel that works just like AutoComplete in programs such as Internet Explorer and Microsoft Office Outlook. As you write a letter or series of letters, AutoComplete lists possible matches in Input Panel based on text that you’ve entered before.

enhanced ink erasingEveryone needs to make corrections to what they write. In Windows Vista, it’s easier to edit or replace ink in Input Panel. For example, in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, you must use the Z-shaped scratch-out gesture to erase words or characters. Windows Vista enables several new, more tolerant scratch-out gestures, including strikethrough, vertical scratch-out in the pattern of an M or W, circular scratch-out, and angled scratch-out. If your tablet pen has an eraser, you can also use the back-of-pen eraser to delete writing.

The TableT pc inpuT panel TabThe Tablet PC Input Panel tab provides a new way to open and position Input Panel on the screen. When Input Panel is closed, the tab appears on the left edge of your screen by default.

Mobile Technologies Enhance Productivity at George Eliot Hospital

Mobile computing technologies, combined with systems such as electronic patient records (EPR) and electronic picture archiving and computing systems (PACS), show great potential for improving the productivity of healthcare workers and enhancing the efficiency of hospitals, clinics and other healthcare organizations. George Eliot Hospital (GEH), a 440-bed acute care hospital in England, worked with Fujitsu Siemens and Intel® Solution Services to put mobile technologies to the test. GEH deployed 20 wireless tablet or notebook PCs to a cross section of care providers. These care providers used the devices with a mobile application portal to access pathology and radiology results, a dashboard application for tracking patient status, and other information sources.

The pilot demonstrated significant time savings for mobile clinicians and reduced the administrative burden on nurses. On an individual basis, time savings included:

Locating pathology results during a clinic visit: consultant and nurse saved 5 minutes each per patient (25 percent).

Community monitoring of chronic patients: nurses saved 45 minutes daily (approximately 10 percent).

Recording and filing surgery notes: administrative staff and consultant saved 20 minutes per procedure.

Retrieving surgery notes at follow-up visit: saved 10 minutes per patient visit (50 percent).

Charting of inpatients: ward nurse saved 10 minutes per shift, medical staff on wards saved 20 minutes per shift (6 percent).

Scanning of pre-op patients: nurses saved 45 minutes per shift (approximately 10 percent).

Return on investment (ROI) analysis showed that these and other time savings would enable the pilot to deliver ROI in 15 months. If the technologies were extended to consultants, senior medical staff and senior house officers (SHOs), 1 ROI would occur in five months. Patient safety and quality of care were also impacted positively.

Toshiba takes Djanogly City Academy to the top of the class

At the heart of the City Academy project is Djanogly’s new £12m school building, on the site of the former Forest Comprehensive. The new site gave the staff the opportunity to rethink how technology is used by the pupils and teachers on a daily basis. The plan was to provide every pupil and teacher with a laptop and each classroom with a wireless projector. Every user would be connected to the school network wirelessly, creating a flexible, dynamic environment.

TexT books To hisTory booksText books and blackboards have been done away with for most lessons. Each classroom has a rack cabinet of Toshiba Portégé Tablet PCs, and a Toshiba tw90 wireless projector. There are over 700 Tablets in total, ensuring every pupil has their own PC during most of their classes. As the pupils enter their classroom, they simply select a machine and log onto the school network via the wireless network.

The Tablet PCs were selected for their versatility. Pupils can read their lessons and enter their work directly onto the Tablet using all the usual Office applications. But by simply flipping the screen around, they can write directly onto any document, just as they would with pen and paper. Furthermore, the Tablets can be used to record any oral work and replay it to the class, or whole school, through an audio system built into every classroom.

Working electronically has vastly reduced the weight of paper both teachers and pupils once found essential for the school day. Once a pupil completes a piece of work, it can be emailed directly to the teacher for marking. Teachers can mark directly onto the work using the Tablet’s pen, and email it back to the pupil. The benefits for the teaching experience itself are considerable. The teachers’ Tablet PCs are connected to the wireless projector in each room, enabling them to deliver lesson content to the class. Because all the content comes from the Tablet PC, a far greater mix of media can be used, including voice, video and the Internet.

This helps make lessons a much more interactive experience for the pupils.

In design, construction, engineering and related industries, much of the Computer Aided Design (CAD) takes place on the move. Floor plan drawings, building asset reports, and wireless site surveys all require a professional to move around the environment, inputting data to a device.

Wireless CAD provider GiveMePower UK was one of the first CAD player to embrace the UMPC technology to aid Mobile CAD and achieve real time, on-the-move reporting using Samsung’s Q1 UMPC.

By using the Q1 Give me Power was able to improve the production time of ‘as-built’ floor/store plans, area calculations and building inspection drawings by up to 10 times, on project’s for McDonald’ s, Cartier , Deutsche Telekom and others.

The combination of its own CAD software for 2D and 3D design, and the Samsung Q1, meant that users could measure, draw and e-mail a finished drawing back to the office before leaving site and without writing down a single dimension. Two separate wireless technologies are employed. First: there’s a Bluetooth link between the UMPC and a hand-held laser, providing the real-time transfer of office dimensions. Second: there is a WiFi link, allowing the user to transfer drawings back to the office using a standard wireless hotspot.

Rather than waiting until the professional returns to the office, the data is sent and ready for processing immediately. Battery life is a key issue in mobile CAD. The Samsung Q1 Power bank has operated for up to nine hours, allowing plenty of time to complete the task.

Michael Axon, managing director of GiveMePower UK, is sold on Samsung Q1 UMPC. ‘We have tried and tested many devices from around the world, each excelling in one area but lacking features in others. Our clients drove our quest for a usable device. The introduction of UMPCs gave us the perfect platform for our clients to work from,’ he says.

TOUGHBOOK IN ACTION. DERBY NHS TRUST IN PANASONIC TOUGHBOOKSThe Derby NHS hospitals needed notebooks that would allow a smooth transition to collecting patient information wirelessly. They would be used across numerous locations to electronically collect patient information and clinical data at the point of care for patients, as well as dealing with the administration and organising of this information.

In addition to the physical risks of drops and knocks, there was also the very real risk of spills and other contamination that the notebooks would encounter. Before the introduction of the Toughbooks all patient information collated at the Derby hospitals had been manually handwritten and sent regularly to a central point for updating patient records. This meant long-time delays in updating of information, as well as a duplication of data entry, so a notebook that provided portability, network connectivity, ruggedisation and versatility was needed.

Light and durable, they provide the durability and reliability needed by the NHS in the 21st century. The CF-18 Toughbook is the first notebook or tablet PC to have had its keyboard extensively tested with NHS solution bleach, allowing it to be wiped clean of any blood

or bodily fluids. In addition, after several meetings and extensive feed back from key Infection Control Nurses, Panasonic redeveloped the screen-antenna covers so that the top-cover has no grooves, which enables easier and more efficient cleaning of the devices on ward rounds.

FutuRe with toughbookSThe first CF-18 Toughbooks were implemented across the Derby Hospitals in early 2006. Response has been positive, with few amends being requested and no failures to date. Initial feedback reports on the time saved due to reduction of duplication of information entry, quicker access to relevant information and less clinical risk. Plans are for the Toughbooks to be rolled out throughout all wards by 2009.
