• Numbers of people kept coming and did this until the American Revolution.

• The immigrates made our earliest town.

mountains very large rivers. When they were near stores and houses they would by food for there selves and there horses then they would leave. Travelers had to cross several major rivers and steep mountain passes and it was not easy to cross by a wagon. The great wagon road starts from Philadelphia and ended in Wachovia the Moravian settlement . Today interstate 81 passes through Harrisburg south through the Shenandoah

Valley.

• Also the settlers cut down trees, found suitable ford across rivers and they worked around obstacles until the wagons could cross there for in time for the Great Wagon Road was improved by colonial standers

• Also Lord Charles Cornwallis and his army used the Great Wagon Road as a road to attempt to destroy Nathaniel Greene’s army.

• Also because of the rail roads and new roads in each town fell in disuse and in many areas the Great Wagon Road disappeared.

• People had a hard time transporting goods because North Carolina’s Legislative Branch didn’t want to use money to improve transportation.

• In the mountains there were poor roads, aviculture, and education.

• North Carolina made a few improvements like better roads and better canals.

• Wagons and horseless carriages are two things that were introduced at this time period.

• Plank roads replaced dirt roads.

• Railroads were important because they helped bring North Carolina out of the Rip Van Winkle period of it’s history.

clear a road bed. Then they elevate the center of the road (so that water can drain). Workers then lay wood sills for support. Finally pine planks are laid on top.

• Money for plank roads came from the profit that some roads made. Also, towns that wanted to benefit from trading on the roads donated money.

• The longest plank road was from Fayetteville to Salem. It was called The Fayetteville and Western. This huge wooden road was 129 miles long.

• Plank roads weren’t as good because 1.They competed with railroads, which were faster. 2.Timing for construction was bad. 3.Travelers weren’t paying their tolls. 4.Plank roads took lots of maintenance. 5.The Civil War destroyed lots of roads.

• The Wright Brothers had a bicycle shop in Dayton, Ohio that they ran and created the glider parts at Dayton, Ohio.

• They chose Kitty Hawk because of the good and strong there and it had soft sand for landing a glider and some people there would help them when they landed.

• The Wright Brothers had to have these three things for the glider to fly. They had to design wings that could keep the airplane in flight. They needed a control system to steer up, down, left, right, and they had to put one wing higher than the other. Finally they needed a light but powerful engine, and propellers to push the craft.

• Wilbur Wright was born in Indiana in 1867. He died I 1912 at 45 years old. Orville Wright was born in Dayton, Ohio in 1871. He died in 1948.
