MOCK INTERVIEWS AND
WORK EXPERIENCE
2017
An introduction to the processes of
work experience and mock interviews
for year 10 students & parents
Why do we do work experience?
O To give you a real taste of what the world of
work is like – not always what you expect!
O Many work environments are different to the
school environment which you are used to
O To become accustomed to the etiquettes,
protocols and culture of workplaces
O To enable employers to give you advice
O A safe place to make mistakes
Work Experience16th – 20th October 2017
O All students will complete one week’s work
experience
O Students need to start thinking now about
where they would like to spend their week
O All relevant forms (to be signed by parents
/carers) are in the student information pack
which you’ll get this evening.
WORK EXPERIENCE
• The school has already been offered a variety of work
placements
• The details of these work experience places are in your
student pack
• If you want one of these, it’s first come, first served
basis from 2nd May – see Mrs Mustoe
• Please don’t approach our Primary Schools – the
places they are offering are already in the pack
• You are more than welcome to arrange your own work
experience placement using your own connections!
• Deadline for placements – Monday 5th June (1st day T6)
Preparing for work experience….
Some of the questions students may have about work
experience:
• When and how should I contact my employer?
• What will I have to wear?
• How should I act / behave?
• What are the timings of the day?
These and all other questions will be addressed by Mr.
Brodhurst at the start of the September term of year 11;
he will ensure that you prepare fully for your placement
through assemblies & tutor activities.
Year 10 Mock InterviewsMonday 3rd July 2017
Aims & objectives
• To give students real life experience of applying for,
preparing for and taking part in a ‘formal ‘ Interview.
• To help students feel more prepared and confident
about future ‘real’ interviews they may have.
Steps for the mock interviews
1. Write your Curriculum Vitae (CV) in PSHE session
2. Complete a job application form
3. Write a covering letter
4. Prepare for your interview
5. Attend your interview
The Mock Interviews• Students will be given an interview time before the day
• They will be required to dress smartly – not school
uniform
• By this day jobs will already have been applied for in
tutor time or in your own time & handed to Mrs. Mustoe
• Completed CVs will go with you in your Achievement
Portfolios
• All will receive feedback from the interviewers (all local
business people who have volunteered to help).
• All receive certificates in recognition of the experience.
Applying for a ‘job’
• Who will be the chosen one?
• Each interviewer will hold about 8 interviews
• They will then select the Year 10 student that they
would have employed had it been a real interview.
• We will hold an assembly following the event after
lunch to present certificates to the successful
candidates.
• What will make you stand out from the others?
These are the provisional sectors we will have representation
for – to be confirmed:
Accountancy Charity Sector
Medicine/Health Applying for college/6th form
Armed Forces Hospitality & Retail
Sports Industry Animal Industry
Public Services (Police/Fire/Ambulance)
Child Care Apprenticeships

Jobs available to apply for
• Mr Brodhurst will lead the CV session for all year 10s in
the next PSHE session (Friday 5th May)
• You’ll all start your CVs then, finish them at home and
email them to Mr Brodhurst/Ms Mustoe
• Week commencing 8th May is focus week for mock
interview choices; you’ll be given a sheet with the choice of
jobs available you must mark your choice in preference
1,2,3 and the form must be handed in to Mr Brodhurst/
Mrs Mustoe no later than Friday 12th May.
• These will be printed out before the interviews take place
and sent to the interviewers, along with covering letters
and an application form.
Next steps 1
Next steps 2• Monday 15th May – students informed of the jobs they will be applying for.
• Then complete an application form (either handwritten or using Word) for that
job.
• Time will be given in English lessons to write a covering letter to go with the
application form.
• It is extremely important that the application form and covering letter are
checked for spelling and grammar.
