FALL MARKET2015

his series is a conversation between my history as an architect and my projects as a maker of quilts. I use a lot of re-claimed clothing in my quilts so I wanted to create fabrics that have the same texture and intrigue I find in using shirting fabrics - giving a nice weave so others can find the love for the fabrics that I have. I chose the most recognizable weaves so that the line has a recognizable texture yet the colors really pop these into a new way of thinking and use. The prints are made to add some fun imagery and larger-scale texture to the wovens, and to put a bit of panache into quilts, bags and wearables made with Dapper. Really the possibilities are endless.

ubverting the traditional quilting form by integrating modern concepts, his art transforms the comfortably fa-miliar into the visually evocative. Luke Haynes was born and raised across the American South. With a formal training in art and architecture at Cooper Union, New York, Haynes con-tinues to experiment with quilting art while exploring art and architecture across the globe.

A chance encounter with a box of fabric remnants sparked Mr. Haynes' imagination. His first quilt, measur-ing 7′ x 10′, led him through years of experimentation and improvements over the years that he has been quilting. Further honing his style, Mr. Haynes developed a system to piece manageable parts into a larger whole, applying a modern design sense to a familiar process. He uses reclaimed materials from the com-munities he works with in his projects to speak with the textile language of the area.

ust before springtime in southern Nevada, when the weather is cool and brisk and you can still enjoy wearing a sweater or sitting on the porch under your favorite quilt, nature does something wonderful. The fallen leaves and branches are ready to begin anew; nature is still sleeping, awaiting its awakening, and the air is crisp. The desert val-ley is surrounded by the coral rocks of the desert hillsides, and amid the rocks, we find wild flowers and creosote, a native shrub that always smells of a fresh spring rain. The beauty of our surroundings and the rich colors of this time of year are the inspiration for Valley.

nspired by the writings of my great, great-grandmother, and an antique Nine Patch quilt, Lizzie's Legacy is a fine example of the many fabrics available to Lizzie in the mid 1800's.

Lizzie kept a daily record of her work and family activities on their farm and ranch from 1857-1882. As an average pioneer woman of the 19th Century, Lizzie made a home, raised 7 sons, took in 3 orphaned boys, and buried an infant daughter. Her daily writings indicate a love for sew-ing and quilting, not just an obligation for caring for her family.

For example, for the year 1868, Lizzie decided she needed to count what she had made. Her list began by stating that she didn't count any or her patching, fruit-drying or garden work. Still, her list for 1868 included: Garments cut and made - 136; yards of cloth wove - 55 1/2; comforts quilted - 6; quilts quilted - 3; quilts pieced - 3; cotton rolls card-ed for - 44 cuts; yards spun for knitting - 15 cuts; socks and stockings knit - 12 pair; cut carpet rags for - 15 yards carpeting; spooled and warpedpieces of cloth - 4;and finally, straw hats platted and made - 1.

A very busy wife and mother, Lizzie wrote nearly every day until just be-fore her death in 1882. She was just shy of her 50th birthday.

hen we built our little cabin and moved to the country, I planted a flower garden outside my studio window to enjoy the ever-changing colors of nature. At the top of my list was a but-terfly bush – I hoped it would entire the butterflies to visit. While we’ve had a few butterflies come and go, the grandkids call it the “bee bush” because there are usually dozens of bees flitting from one bloom to another. They spend their days collecting their quota of pollen, then fly back to their hive to make honey. As a quilter, I get that. I spend hours on the computer design-ing quilts, then time is spent stitching blocks to make quilts, and finally, I spend days traveling to share those quilts. In the end, I love my job as I’m surrounded by quilters and beautiful quilts. How sweet it is when your life’s work yields such a delightful result

enche (pronounced “Venk-a”) Wolff Hatling is a Norwegian quilt design-er who lives in the small town of Steinkjer, Norway with her husband and 4 kids (3 daughters-22, 20, and 14 yrs) and 1 son (11 yrs). Wenche is an architect by education, and worked many years both in public planning and house construction before devoting herself full time to the quilt de-signing business in 2011.

Northern Quilts started in 2002, when she began designing quilts. It expanded to be a quilt shop business and is now one of Norway’s best known web shops. Wenche has designed a lot of quilt patterns and stitch-ery patterns for the Scandinavian market. Her patterns have been published in the Norwegian, Swedish and Danish quilt magazines, European QuiltMania, American Patchwork & Quilting and Australian Homespun. In 2013 she began design-ing fabrics. Inspired by Nordic nature and traditions, Wenche tries to combine fun & cute with more graphic shapes. "To make a quilt is all about having fun, and if my designs can bring a smile to your face, I have suceeded!"
