PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE… Student Success It is a wonderful week when I have so many students to congratulate! Congratulations to year 9 student Mackenzie Bohan who has been selected for the Under 16 State Baseball team to play in a national tournament in Geelong in January next year. Mackenzie has been playing baseball for 11 years and trains exceptionally hard to achieve his personal best. He was selected because of his enormous talent, dedication and commitment to his sport. Mackenzie will play against other state and country teams over a 9 day period and if good enough, could be selected to represent Australia on a national team. Congratualtions Mackenzie, we’re very proud of you. Good luck also to Year 10 students Andrew McMenemy, Mason Kidd and Christopher Lomberg who have been selected to audition for the 2013 NSW Public Schools Senior Drama Ensemble. It is quite exciting to hear of the continual and ongoing recognition Model Farms High School receives in the Arts Unit. I’m sure the boys will do us proud. Congratulations to Caitlin Martin, also of Year 10 who is performing at the Schools Spectacular as part of the NSW Public Schools Singers. Caitlin is an accomplished singer and has performed in the Spectacular for the past 6 years and will be involved for a large part of the performance this year. Year 12 student Timothy Hill looks like having a fantastic year after his HSC as he has been accepted as a WEP exchange student to Belgium next year. Through his personal application and personal interview Timothy displayed curiosity and maturity, both of which are essential attributes of successful exchange students. While in Belgium, Timothy will live with a volunteer host family and attend a local school full time. Congratulations also to Year 10 students Lauren Brokenbrough and Monique Uytterhoeven-Spark on being invited by Open High School to attend a Japanese language workshop being held at Australian National University in Canberra on the 5th and 6th December. The girls will be attending this exciting workshop and will be staying on campus at the university and will experience some exciting opportunities to improve their Japanese. Additionally, Lauren has been advised by Open High where she currently studies Japanese, that she is being awarded the Open High School 'Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Award' in 2012. This is a fantastic honour for Lauren and a wonderful achievement. She will be presented with her certificate at an Open High School Presentation ceremony in December. Lauren will continue to study Japanese and Italian through OHS for her HSC as she is unable to study them at Model Farms High School due to

clashes on our timetable. We are however delighted that one of our students demonstrates such effort and diligence in all of her subjects, regardless of where they are studied. Congratulations Lauren and all our accomplished and talented students this week.

HSC The HSC is over! Congratulations to all our Year 12 students. I’m sure quite a few students have partied already but I encourage them and their parents to still be mindful of the potential dangers of ‘partying hard’. We hope all of our students have a safe and happy time celebrating. School Prefects Congratulations to our new prefects for 2013. With a large number of students nominating for the positions it is indeed an honour to secure one of them. The prefects are Mitchell Hannah, Daniel Grosskopf, Mason Kidd, Liam Campbell, Joshua Donohoo, Thomas Allen, Wilsen Ke, Holly Dymond, Nicole Fitzsimons, Parvathi Subramaniam, Jaimie Swavley, Alison Hill, Cassandra Easthorpe, Taylah Starc, Veronica Scislowski and Hannah Overton. This year we specifically asked students to also nominate for the positions of Sports House Captains and we now have a team of 8 Year 11 students who will be led in their roles by our 2 Year 12 Sports Captains, Naomi De Bruine and Joe Macrae. Our Sports House Captains for 2013 are Rishelle Gribben, Brooke McDonald, Yasemin Bugdayli, Aashna Kumar, Hayden Ivers, Fletcher Bailey, Mitchell Williams, and Amir Saberian. Calculators: Please make sure that all students have their own calculator. The Casio fx-82AU is sold at the uniform shop for $35. Students need this calculator from Year 7. It is vital for their progress that students are familiar with their calculator and know how to use the different functions. Fun with Maths Year 9 are studying ‘Graphs of Physical Phenomena’ at the moment. In this topic students learn how to interpret travel graphs, which can be a bit confusing at first. The Gardening Group During 2012 the gardening group took part in many projects around the school. Have you seen the changes to the school quadrangle yet? If not you won’t know how much hard work went into the transformation of the garden. It involved removing rubbish and old plants. The area was turned over and mulched. It took around 30 wheelie bins to fill the garden with mulch. The plants were put in and the effects were dramatic. The tree

was kindly painted with the assistance of Mrs Munroe and various volunteers from Year 10. Painting the seat blue brought the whole project together. The wonderful students who participated in this project have the sincere thanks of Mrs Snell and the school community. They gave up their time and worked very hard to achieve this outstanding result.

A big thank you to the P&C who were very generous in their donations and support of the project. Once again for all the support that was offered by the school community to make this project a success.

The veggie patch At the moment the group have started a veggie patch in the Ag plot in the school grounds. Again the students have worked extremely hard and their efforts have started to pay off. This week they were able to pull out a few weeds, water their plants and look at how much the plants have grown. Students have planted tomatoes, zucchini, herbs, sunflowers and beans.

Statement of Account – from Model Farms High School You may have noticed recent changes to the way we Invoice Students for Subject Fees, Excursions and other Extra Curricular Activities on your Family Statement of Account. This method is used in schools to assist in the administration of the event and to give parents an overview of what is happening in the near future. A statement of account is in no way a letter of demand, rather a tool that outlines what may be outstanding as far as subject fees and future excursions. A Statement of Account is not an all inclusive list of charges for the year and new items are added throughout the year. Some frequently asked questions may assist you in understanding your recent Statement of Account received last week. An example is set out below.

Frequently Asked Questions: Why am I being charged for Excursions when I haven’t seen a permission note? In the organisation of an excursion, the office types the permission note ready to distribute to students. In most cases, an invoice is then created against that student, ready for when they return with their signed permission note from home with their payment. That payment is then offset against the invoice. Are all Excursions & Extra Curricular Activities Invoiced? No, when a large number of students are attending an activity, then a bulk invoice will be created for all students in the Year or Subject. You will know which activities are invoiced when you read the permission note in the payment section; it will say Invoiced with the fee charged. I have just received my Family Statement of Account and there is an item listed that I paid for last week, why? The Invoice is only as current as the day it was printed. You will see that date at the top right hand side of the Statement. If you have paid an item within a couple of days after this date then it is likely that the Statement and your payment have crossed in the mail.

My child did not or will not be attending the event and I have been charged for it. All outstanding Invoices are cancelled after the event has occurred, so if your child did not have permission to attend, it will be removed from your Statement after the event has been finalised. Is the School charging me twice (Double Dipping)? No, the School is not charging you twice. In fact this method prevents a student paying for excursions twice. If the item still appears as outstanding on our system, when the student comes to the payments window, our staff know that the student has not paid and we offset the payment with the invoice. Using the alternate manual process, a student can come and pay for an excursion more than once with no system flags to advise any previous payment. This rarely happens, however, only until a report is done to review how many students have paid to attend is any duplication identified and the family advised. What if I have Questions? Should you have any questions regarding a Statement of Account at any time, or wish to make payment arrangements, please do not hesitate to speak with Jo Warner or Natalie Anderson in our Finance Office.

FROM THE HSIE FACULTY

Year 8 Ancient and Medieval Show On Friday, the 2nd November, Year 8 students were given an insight into weaponry and armour from Ancient Rome, Greece and Medieval Europe. The day was split into two sections consisting of a show presented by historical warfare expert, James Adams and 3 periods of Medieval activities. During the day we were able to interact with weapons, armour and other medieval equipment. These were made to look like the exact replica of the originals. At the beginning of the show students could volunteer to try on armour from different regions in Europe. The costume to represent what an ancient Greek soldier wore consisted of a thick cotton breastplate, bronze greaves (shin pads), a large wooden shield which weighed 12 kilograms and a fancy helmet which had a plume made from horse hair. The Romans had developed a more effective and protective suit of armour. The armour was skilfully made out of strong but expensive metal. A particular feature of the costume was the chain mail which the students had the opportunity to try on. It was very heavy and could weigh up to 30kg.

Many weapons were used in the middle ages. Each weapon had its own purpose. The most common weapons used were the sword, shield and spears. Bows and arrows were also used but not as frequently. Swords were made in many different styles. In the Middle Ages, daggers were introduced as a substitute to swords because people committed too many crimes with swords so they were no longer allowed to carry them around. Shields played an important role in battle. Rounded shields were held by some soldiers to maximise protection. Wooden shields were light and cheap to make but over time would start rotting. As shields developed, metal was used instead.

Torture was used during the Middle Ages as a form of punishment. We were able to see a pillory, which was used to hold the person’s wrists and neck. The stocks were to hold the person’s ankles. James Adams demonstrated how hanging worked, without anybody being hurt! Chopping off body parts such as hands was a common torture method. We thoroughly enjoyed the day and benefitted from the experience. Report by Angela, Holly, Katie, Katrina and Rebecca of Year 8.
