Release Notes - Model Maker 1.2.1

Model Maker 1.2.1 is available. The IBM® Tivoli® Netcool® Performance Manager:Model Maker 1.2.1 Release Notes addresses new product features, compatibility, installation, and other getting-started issues.

DescriptionThe Model Maker v1.2.1 tooling greatly simplifies the task of reporting on theperformance of wireless and wireline networks. Through the creation, deployment, and management of common packs, Model Maker simplifies the process ofdeploying report packages for Network Performance Management on Tivoli®

Common Reporting.

In this release, Model Maker simplifies the creation of wireless data models, andtheir inclusion in common packs. Wireline data models can be manually created, and then packaged in common packs by using Model Maker Manager.

Model Maker v1.2.1 is delivered with Tivoli Netcool® Performance Manager 1.3.2interim fix as follows:

New features in this releaseThe following new functionality and performance enhancements to existingfunctionality are available for wireless customers only, and requires the installationof the 1.3.2.0-TIV-TNPM-IF0001 fix pack on Tivoli Netcool Performance Manager -Wireless component.

Performance enhancements

v Model Maker Manager has significant performance enhancements forthe process of creating common pack data models. The usability of thetool is greatly increased by reducing the number of steps that you mustperform to create and install a common pack. By using Model Makerv1.2.1, common packs are simple to deploy with minimal configuration. There is one simple step for model deployment that includes update thatlargely reduces user intervention. After the CIF (.tnpmmodel) file isgenerated, it is passed to the server where the model generation, packaging, activation are taken care of and the common pack isdeployed to Tivoli Integrated Portal. The new deploy function in ModelMaker Manager takes care of add, activate, and publish operations fromthe earlier Model Maker v1.2.0.

v Model Maker is now simple to administer.v Framework Manager and Oracle client are no longer required for Model

Maker Manager deploy operation.v There is a tight coupling between the applications.

Model Maker Generator changesThe Model Maker Generator is not required to be run separately for ModelMaker deploy operation. The Generator functionality is merged withCommon Pack Service and moved to the server side. Themodel.properties file and configuring the model.properties file is nolonger required for Model Maker deploy operation.

Reduced data modelYou can opt to use the reduced data model. The reduced data modelfeature removes the database view from the generated model and savesapproximately 40-50% on model size. The reduced data model containsonly the consolidation view. The Database view is removed from themodel.

Resource Metric Viewer enhancementsThere are some usability enhancements in using the Resource MetricViewer to create dynamic reports.

Multiple CIF (.tnpmmodel) files in the repositoryYou can deploy multiple common packs to the repository. You can load allCIF files that are found in the directory to the repository.

Note: By using the Model Maker v1.2.1, you have an option to use both old andnew workflows for creating common packs. New workflow refers to Model Makerv1.2.1 Manager deploy operation and old workflow refers to Model Maker v1.2.0and earlier versions where discrete operations are required to publish a commonpack to Tivoli Integrated Portal. If you want to use the workflow from the previousversion, you can use the Model Maker Generator that is available in Model Makerv1.2.1. For information about the old workflow, see IBM Tivoli Netcool PerformanceManager: Model Maker 1.2.0 Installation and User Guide from the following website:http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/tivihelp/v8r1/topic/com.ibm.tnpm.doc/modmaker/ctnpm_mm_install_user.html

2 IBM Tivoli Netcool Performance Manager: Model Maker 1.2.1 Release Notes

Model Maker componentsComponents of Model Maker

Model Maker consists of the following components:v Model Maker Manager.v Model Maker Extractor (supports wireless only in this release).v The Common Pack Service.v The Base Common Pack Suite. The latest Base Common Pack Suite

(1.0.0.3-TIV-TNPM-BCPSUITE-FP0001) is available as a separate download fromIBM Fix Central from here:http://www.ibm.com/support/fixcentral/

v A set of Wireless CIF files.

The Common Pack ServiceA mandatory server-side component that is installed on the TivoliCommon Reporting server and provides a host service for managingcommon packs for Common Reporting functionality on the Tivoli NetcoolPerformance Manager system.

You can install and manage common packs by using the Model MakerManager GUI on a Windows computer, and the Common Pack Service CLIon the Tivoli Common Reporting Server.

You can download common packs from the Common Pack Service to aWindows computer for modification or for deploying to the TivoliCommon Reporting Content Store.

Model Maker Manager

A mandatory common pack administrator and modeler tool, Model MakerManager is an Eclipse-based Client GUI for the Common Pack Service. Youuse Model Maker Manager to perform the following tasks:v Install and manage wireless and wireline common packs on Tivoli

Netcool Performance Manager systems.v Create and deploy wireless common pack report packages to the Tivoli

Common Reporting Content Store for report authoring.

Note: Currently, the deploy function in Model Maker Manager supportsonly the wireless common packs and not the wireline common packs.

v Create common packs from the wireless common pack contentsgenerated by Model Maker Extractor.

v Combine common pack data models and extend common packs.

Model Maker Extractor (Wireless only in this release)An optional common pack modeler tool required if you need to createyour own Tivoli Netcool Performance Manager common packs. Commonpack modelers can use Model Maker Extractor to browse a technologypack and extract the technology pack definition metadata, or browse a liveTivoli Netcool Performance Manager system and extract summary or busyhour metadata. The metadata extracted is converted into a CommonIntermediate Format (CIF) file (.tnpmmodel) for later processing into a datamodel.

Wireless CIF filesA set of Common Intermediate Format (CIF) files are the dependentcommon packs that are packaged with Model Maker. These CIF files are

Release Notes - Model Maker 1.2.1 3

required to process each of the supported Wireless GOM and GOMlet basecommon packs provided with each release.

The Base Common Pack Suite

The Base Common Pack Suite is a set of Base Common Packs (BCPs). BaseCommon Packs (BCPs) are common packs that can be used as buildingblocks for other Tivoli Netcool Performance Manager common packs. BCPstypically contain items such as time dimensions from the TCR Time BaseCommon Pack, or network resources related to specific technologies.v The TCR Time BCP is a dependent pack for all common packs, both for

the Tivoli Netcool Performance Manager Wireless and WirelineComponents.

v The Wireline Common BCP is a dependent pack for all wireline commonpacks.

v Typically, a number of Wireless BCPs are dependent packs for a wirelesscommon pack. Wireless BCPs support a number of Global Object Model(GOM) and GOMlet Technology Packs. Refer to individual wirelesscommon pack release notes to see the list of dependent packs for aparticular pack.
