CompetenceAs it was mentioned above ABB has extensive experience in designing and building power substations which are the most important element of each electric energy distribution grid. The ABB branch in Kraków, which specializes in this market sector, and the Transmission and Distri-bution Substations Engineering Centre being part of the branch have realized hundreds of projects, the majority of which concerned the key elements of distribution infrastructure in the whole country. The list of substations built and modernized by ABB includes nearly 150 facilities. Each was designed from scratch, according to the individual requirements of the client, using the best engineering solutions, the cutting-edge technology, the highest-class devices and according to the strictest environmental standards. The list also con-tains facilities prepared to receive energy

from wind parks. The design of a 400 kV switching substation in Słupsk, to which the HVDC SwePol submarine distribution line was connected, was created in the Kraków office.

TechnologiesThe high voltage direct current technolo-gy (HVDC) – especially HVDC Light – is very often used to energy transmission from maritime and off-shore wind parks to electroenergetic substations located on land. Cables with polymer insulation which have been used in this solution are charac-terized by flexibility and ultimate strength. Small losses and the possibility to connect asynchronous networks make this solution ideal for energy transmission notonly underwater, it also allows to limit losses on land, between the power station and the point of contact with the grid. ABB is a pioneer of this technology in the world.

Services

The ABB Group has the potential and the possibilities to deliver all the products and perform all the services which clients may expect from a global-scale company. Taking into consideration ABB’s opportunity to benefit from the achievements and experience gained in other countries, the company is the best partner in the Polish market to provide complex implementation of projects associated with wind power technology.

It has accomplished many extremely im-portant projects, many of them associated with the distribution of energy generated from renewable sources. ABB also offers the knowledge and ready-made solutions concerning the alternating current trans-mission. The solutions help eliminate the problem of reactive power compensation as well. They include STATCOM, FACTS and SVC technologies.

SystemsBut the technology itself – even the best one – is not enough to efficiently manage the entire infrastructure. Therefore, the ABB offer includes solutions for the super-vision and control of the whole electroener-getic system. The management and mo-nitoring systems offered by the company give the possibility to increase the system effectiveness and reliability, they also allow to forecast the demand for electric energy

generated from the force of the wind, at the same time providing input data for many analytical and planning tools. That is why ABB is able to offer the full scope of services, from the design to com-missioning, including: preparation of the conceptual design, management of the complete project, installation of devices and systems, training for operators, and maintenance supervision.

Products

I. Components for wind turbinesABB provides many key subassemblies to wind turbine manufacturers. It is the most important supplier for the three big-gest companies producing wind turbines in the world. The deliveries include techno-logically advanced generators for turbines with both angle of incidence adjustment and blade angle adjustment; from con-stant speed generators powered from both sides to generators with permanent magnet; and also electric motors as well as inverters and low and medium voltage converters necessary to generate and transmit electric energy.

Low voltage apparatusLow voltage products take a very impor-tant place in ABB’s offer. Applying cutting-edge technologies and its own engineering solutions, the company manufactures switchgears, switching apparatus, control and protection elements, and housings and complete cable systems.

Distribution transformersABB is one of the biggest manufacturers of these devices in Europe. The factory in Łódź produces oil-immersed transformers. In another factories at the same time the ABB Group manufactures dry transfor-mers. Distribution transformers constitute indispensable elements of the basic infra-structure of a wind power plant.

SwitchgearABB proposes a specially prepared switch-gear, which can be installed in the base of the wind turbine’s tower. A narrow compact circuit-breaker compartment with the rated voltage of 36 kV guarantees simple ins-tallation and possible future replacement.

This element of ABB’s offer – known as the SafeWind brand – is specially dedi-cated to wind power generation. Among other things, the switchgear owes its small dimensions to SF6 gas insulation.

II. Main switchgearABB produces technologically advan-ced solutions for main medium voltage switchgear. The offer includes both ZS1 air insulated switchgear and the small size and maintenance free ZX gas insulated switchgear.

Power transformerPower transformers produced by ABB belong to the best in their class as far as construction and manufacturing techno-logy are concerned. They constitute the key element of national electric energy distribution network in several dozen places. Special realizations may success-fully be used in the wind power generation and installed not only in electroenergetic stations receiving the „green” energy, but also directly on the platforms of off-shore wind power plants, where they are able to work faultlessly in extremely unfavourab-le conditions.

High voltage apparatusABB offers conventional elements of high voltage infrastructure, such as traditional circuit breakers, transformers or surge arresters. Many investors, however, decide to use modular solutions including com-pact complex switchgear, like COMPASS or PASS modules, which make it possible to build an electroenergetic substation on a small area, where every single module is equivalent to a high voltage field. Great popularity has been won by a circuit

Taking into consideration the entire „way” the energy has to go from the moment it is generated to the moment it is sent to the distribution network, ABB offers the whole range of products indispensable to realize this transfer, as well as its protection and control.

breaker integrated with a DCB disconnec-tor; the smaller number of components of the device makes the grid safer and more reliable.

Underground and submarine cablesABB is one of the biggest producers of high voltage underground and submarine cables in the world. Many of the cables are used to connect off-shore wind power plants with substations receiving the pow-er on land. They are often used to transmit energy in HVDC system (high voltage direct current), which allows to decrease losses substantially.
