A MODERN TREND IN HOSPITAL DESIGN

Modular Building for Hospitals

What is modular construction?

The use of pre-fabricated building components that are manufactured in an indoor factory environment and later assembled on-site

Why build modular Greener

Modular construction uses sustainable practices and the amount of material wasted is considerably reduced. The separate modules or pieces of the puzzle can be reused or repurposed thus reducing the amount of energy, time, and resources spent to meet a new need from scratch.

FasterSince all production is housed indoors, it is not impacted by inclement weather. Additionally, site work and construction can take place simultaneously reducing the project turnaround time by half.

SmarterModular construction significantly reduces construction site mishaps as workers are now operating in a controlled environment. Assembly line manufacturing of components increases efficiency and quality control measures can be incorporated with greater ease.

Modular building for hospitals

Modular construction is a modern trend in hospital design that has been used extensively in other industries, but healthcare was so far lagging behind

Modular building is specially relevant for healthcare because in the case of any renovation / new installations at a hospital, on-site construction would disrupt patient flow and cause discomfort

The standardization provided by modular building promotes flexibility and ease of allowing functions to shift from floor to floor, thus reducing the need for patient transfers

With healthcare in India moving towards standardized environments and systematic approaches to care delivery, modular is proving to be a great fit

Headwalls, bathrooms, or even entire hospitals can be pre-fabricated and installed

Basic process

Procurement of materials

Fabrication of modules in a factory

Transportation of modules on-site

Assembly of separate modules to create a functional unit

Some Successful Structures

The Miami Valley Hospital Heart and Orthopedic Center’s bed tower was the first U.S. hospital to extensively apply modular prefabrication. With 178 identical rooms on five repetitive floors, the hospital’s patient rooms, exam rooms, single-toilet rooms, and patient-unit overhead utilities were all built at assembly warehouses and then erected on-site

The CSM Hospital at Ballari, Karnataka was the first completely pre-fabricated hospital in India. Equipped with 36 beds, a special and semi-special ward for patients, an ICU and an operation theatre, the project took 30 days to complete with design, planning, preparation, installation, finishing, and furnishing
