I. Read the following text :

The Ant and the Grasshopper

On one fine summer's day, a grasshopper was hopping about in a musical mood. An ant passed

by carrying a great corn. She was taking it to her house. The grasshopper invited the ant to sit and sing

with him. But the ant refused. "I’m storing up food for winter. Why don’t you do the same?" asked

the ant. "Pooh! Why bother about winter?" said the grasshopper. "We have got enough food now."

But the Ant went on her way and continued her job. Finally, when winter came, the grasshopper found

himself dying of hunger, while he saw the ants eating corn and grain from their house. Then

the grasshopper understood that it is best to prepare for the days of necessity.

I. Read the text below

The Life Saver

I will always remember the day we took our dog, Stella, to the beach for the first time. Stella was eight

years old and quite a big dog. It was a sunny day, but very windy, so there weren’t many people on the

beach. Mum and Dad were there, and so was my sister Sue.

Stella was very excited. She ran up and down the beach, chasing her ball. Suddenly, Stella dropped the

ball and started to run towards some rocks in the distance. We didn’t know what was wrong so we ran

after her, shouting her name. When she got to the rocks she jumped into the sea and started swimming.

We saw a green jacket in the water and we could see that Stella wanted to get it. She took it in her teeth

and swam back to the beach.

That was when we saw that it was not just a jacket - it was a little boy! My Dad quickly carried the boy

to a dry part of the beach and helped him to breathe again. That was when the boy’s mother arrived. She

cried, but she was very happy that her little son was alive. She thanked us all - but especially Stella – for

saving her boy from drowning.

2. What did they take to the beach for Stella to play with?

Module 5

I. Read the story : School starts in a week and today is the day we go shopping for school supplies!

I told mom that I didn’t need anything. I loved my backpack from last year. It had a picture of Topaz,

my favorite rock singer. It even had her autograph across the bottom of her picture. I couldn’t wait to

get it out and check my supplies. When I pulled out my backpack from the back of my closet, I was

horrified at how dirty it was. Somehow, over the summer, a strap was broken, the color was faded, and

the zipper was stuck. There was a dark spot right on Topaz’s chin and you could hardly read her

signature any more. When I looked inside, I found papers that were stuck together from an open glue

bottle. I wondered who took the cap off of my glue bottle. There was a library book I borrowed and

forgot to return. My markers had escaped from the box and the caps were mysteriously missing. My

lucky pencil was too short to write with anymore. I discovered the dark spot on Topaz’s chin was from

the cupcake I packed away from the end-of-the-year picnic. The frosting melted all over my notebooks

and scissors. I decided it was time to make my list of new school supplies.

II. Answer the following questions:

1. Why didn’t the main character think she needed new school supplies? ___________________________________________________________________________________. 2. What caused her to change her mind? ___________________________________________________________________________________. 3. What caused the dark spot on her backpack? ___________________________________________________________________________________. 4. Why couldn’t the markers be used? ___________________________________________________________________________________. 5. How do you think the cap came off the glue bottle? ___________________________________________________________________________________.

Food Fright

Doctors in Britain are worried because British teenagers eat lots of

crisps, sweets and fat food. Most teenagers don’t eat enough fruit or

vegetables and more than one million British school children are

overweight.

Some teenagers say that they don’t have time to eat good food, but kids

who have a poor diet often have health problems when they are older.

Americans have been familiar with fast food for a long time; it was born there. American fast food is

now a part of life far beyond the stores of The United States. McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, and Burger king

have restaurants all over the world.

No one can deny that the idea of fast food at a fair price has its place around the world. These

organizations are popular because they are pleasing a need within a particular country’s economy.

A steady diet of burgers fries and soda may seem delicious, but it won’t feed your body with vitamins

and minerals; you need to stay healthy. Fast food lacks many important nutrients.

Some parents are blaming the large number of fast food restaurants where people eat high-calorie

foods of low nutritional value.

Now doctors are giving young people books and games about a good diet. Having a healthy, well-

balanced diet can help you feel better and live longer.

I. Say if these sentences are true (T) or false (F). Always support your answer with a sentence from the text.

1- British doctors don’t care about habits of young people.

Last year, I went horse riding with my husband, Steve. We both love sports and we were really excited.

It was a funny experience. You see, we were on the horses when there was a loud noise and they got

scared. They started running and we couldn’t stop them. I was terrified. After a while my husband fell

off his horse. Luckily, a few minutes later my horse stopped running. I got off and ran to Steve. He had a

huge bump on his head and when we saw him, he said, “I don’t think we should go horse riding again”.

Emily 31

About a month ago, I visited my grandparents and my grandfather decided to spend the weekend fishing

with me. We got ready and went to the river near their house. At first, it was fun, but after a while I got

bored. I didn’t want to scare the fish away, so I couldn’t talk, listen to music, or even move. Suddenly, I

felt something moving in the water. “A fish!” I shouted to my grandfather. Unfortunately, I was really

excited, and when I stood up I fell into the water. My grandfather couldn’t stop laughing. It was

hilarious!
