3TEMS Investigation 12.0, September 2010, Ascom3TEMS Investigation AscomTEMS Automatic is a truly autonomous network testing system that gives an overview of network quality as perceived by the subscriber. TEMS Automatic provides round-the-clock wireless QoS measurements without the cost of round-the-clock personnel.TEMS Discovery is a wireless network reporting and analytics tool for indoor test post processing, drive test analysis, and LTE network diagnostics.TEMS Investigation is the industry-leading tool for wireless network drive testing, troubleshooting, verification, optimization, and maintenance.TEMS Mobile Insight For deep insight into the subscriber experience, operators need to see what is happening on the subscriber's device. To address this need, Ascom Network Testing has introduced TEMS Mobile Insight, a mobile quality of experience (QoE) testing solution that collects data from subscribers smart phones in the form of key performance indicators (KPIs) as well as direct subscriber feedback.TEMS Monitor Master tests and monitors the mobile subscriber experience by simulating real users doing real things like entering contests, playing games and sending messages on real devices and networks.TEMS Pocket is the most advanced and powerful handheld tool on the market for verification, maintenance, and troubleshooting of mobile networks, including in-building wireless testing and basic cell planning tasks.TEMS Symphony is a single, powerful, and versatile mobile network benchmarking solution for all of your wireless network benchmarking needs.TEMS Visualization is a wireless network optimization solution that enables engineers to rapidly analyze subscriber-centric call trace data captured directly from the network infrastructure.Ascom Tools4Course OutlineModule 1

Data collection and real-time troubleshootingOn-screenpost-processingReportingWhat is TEMS Investigation?TEMS Investigation is an air interface test tool for cellular networks.Multi-technology capabilities: GSM/GPRS/EDGEWCDMA/HSPA/HSPA+LTE (FDD and TDD)TD-SCDMACDMA/EVDOWiMAX (carrier scanning)Service tests to mirror user experience of the network (Voice, Data, AQM.)Notes for the instructor: This section should take approximately 8 minutes.

Describe the functionalities of TEMS Investigation.

TEMS Investigation is an air interface test tool for cellular networks, primarily used for data collection and real-time troubleshooting but it also provides On-screen post-processing and Reporting capabilities. As a Data collection and real-time troubleshooting tool:

It can be used for conventional drive-testing or walk-testing for indoor environments. It has multi-technology capabilities (GSM, WCDMA, LTE, TD-SCDMA, CDMA, WiMAX, etc.) and interfaces with a variety of measurement devices to collect data and record it in logfiles.Different types of tests can be performed to mirror the user experience of the network (Voice calls, Video Telephony calls, Data Services, Audio Quality Measurements) or for troubleshooting purposes. It provides multiple means for presentation of the data and total flexibility for customization.

On-screen post-processing.

Single logfile replay can be performed

Reporting.

HTML-based report generator.Measurement access (logfile export).KPI reports are now produced using TEMS Discovery (or TEMS Automatic). All data required for KPIs are always recorded in logfiles.

7TEMS Investigation 12.0, August 2010, Ascom8[ INTRODUCTION ]Connectable EquipmentPhonesData CardsUSB ModemsScannersGPS devices

Notes for the instructor: This section should take approximately 5 minutes.

Describe the different connectable equipment in TEMS Investigation and explain on a high level the use of each of them.

Phones, Data Cards and USB Modems

TEMS Investigation supports a wide variety of user terminals, including ones from Sony Ericsson, Samsung, LG, Nokia, Motorola, Qualcomm, HTC, Novatel, Sierra Wireless, Option, Huawei and Datang. They allow comprehensive monitoring of cellular networks of different technologies either independently or simultaneously. These devices are used for service testing mirroring the user experience of the network.

Scanners

Scanning can be performed for different technologies using Sony Ericsson phones for WCDMA and GSM or scanners from different vendors like PCTel (LTE, WCDMA, GSM, CDMA, TD-SCDMA), DRT (LTE, WiMAX), Anritsu, Andrew, Rohde & Schwarz and Ascom Scanning Receiver Units (WCDMA, GSM).These devices are used to measure the air interface independently of the Radio Access Network settings.Different scanning devices support different scanning features.

Positioning

GPS units, either standalone or built into scanners, can be used for geographical positioning.A Dead Reckoning Unit can be utilized when GPS signals are not available during outdoor measurements (Trimble Placer Gold).Manual positioning (pinpointing) is likewise supported, with indoor measurements in mind.

TEMS Investigation 12.0, August 2010, Ascom89[ INTRODUCTION ]Licensing SolutionsLicensing is based on the HASP technologyHardware-based (HASP HL)Software-based (HASP SL)Licenses associated with TEMS Investigation can be either local or network licensesHASP HL

LANHASP SLLicense ServerNotes for the instructor: This section should take approximately 5 minutes.

Describe the different license solutions available and explain the differences.

Licensing for TEMS Investigation is based on the HASP technology. Both hardware-based (HASP HL) and software-based (HASP SL) licensing can be used.

Licenses associated with TEMS Investigation can be either local or network licenses:

A local license is embodiedIn a hardware key which is inserted into the PC, (HASP HL)In a software key that is installed on it (HASP SL)

A network license is obtained on the client machineBy connecting to a license server and checking out a software key from that server (HASP SL)

Local vs Network Licenses

If HASP HL is used, a local license is required for connecting external devices in TEMS Investigation. For all other functions, TEMS Investigation can use either a local license or a network license. If HASP SL is used, either a local license or a network license can be used for all TEMS Investigation functions.

License Requirements

A license is always required to run TEMS Investigation. Without a license you cannot launch the application. For a device to be connectable (possible to activate) in TEMS Investigation, it must be covered by your license options. It is possible in TEMS Investigation to load and replay logfiles recorded with devices for which you have no license.TEMS Investigation 12.0, August 2010, Ascom910[ INTRODUCTION ]SummaryTEMS Investigation is primarily a tool for data collection and real-time analysis. Interfaces with phones, data cards, USB modems, scanners, GPS devices.Collects data and records it in logfiles.Supports different cellular technologies (LTE, WCDMA, GSM, CDMA, etc).Different types of tests can be performed to mirror the user experience of the network (Voice, Video Telephony, Data Services, Audio Quality Measurements).Licensing is based on the HASP technology (HASP HL and HASP SL)Licenses associated with TEMS Investigation can be either local or network licenses.

Notes for the instructor: This section should take approximately 5 minutes.

Read the Summary to the audience and clarify any doubts.

TEMS Investigation 12.0, August 2010, Ascom1011[ INTRODUCTION ]QuestionsCan we use TEMS Investigation to perform indoor measurements as well as outdoor measurements? What technologies are supported in TEMS Investigation? Are they supported simultaneously? What types of tests mirroring the user experience of the network can be performed with TEMS Investigation? Can TEMS Investigation use software-based licensing? What types of devices can TEMS Investigation interface with?

Notes for the instructor: This section should take approximately 5 minutes.

Ask the questions to different participants, help them with the answers if needed and clarify any doubts.
