Les pronoms compléments d’objet direct

_____ In this section you will learn how to avoid repetition in your speaking and writing. Anyone who progresses beyond just the basics in a language wants to be capable of varying his/her style by using pronouns to replace things or people already spoken about in the previous sentence or clause. The direct object pronouns that you will learn can replace proper nouns or nouns modified in a variety of ways, such as with definite, possessive, or demonstrative articles. The direct object pronouns one uses must always agree in number and gender with the original nouns they replace. Usually they will be placed before the verb of the sentence in which they are found, but when there is both a conjugated verb and an infinitive in the sentence, the direct object pronoun should be placed before the infinitive. Even the brief demonstrative constructions Voici! and Voilà! are considered verbs, so direct object pronouns can precede them as well.

Le subjonctif avec il faut et il vaut mieux

_____ In this section, you will learn how to talk about what you have to do or think it best to do. Il faut que, il ne faut pas que, il vaut mieux que, and il vaudrait mieux que are the first of a group of expressions that you will learn to use that communicte these ideas. Although the subjunctive is not another tense, it is a mood, you should learn the new construction just as you would learn a new tense. The construction is used in the first clause of a two clause sentence. These sentences have three parts: (1) the introductory expression that “runs up a red flag” which tells you that the verb in the clause to follow must be in the subjunctive, (2) the linking word que which ties the two clauses together (which translates as “that”. Unfortunately, we often leave out the “that” in English. It takes attention to detail to remember it in French, at first.) (3) the second clause in which the verb must be conjugated in the subjunctive mood.

Print out a copy and write your answers on that copy.  Then go to the answer key at http://frit.osu.edu/students/undergraduatestudies/ii/pmats/AK8.doc and check your answers.  Correct your answers with a different color ink and make an appointment to have it checked by an instructor.

On a separate piece of paper, record feedback from your instructor after the grading of your Practice MAT. What might you improve before taking the MAT?

MODULAR ACHIEVEMENT TEST

The two parts of the MAT, oral and written, can be completed in any order.

_____ Take the written MAT in the Individualized Instruction testing room. Because there is a listening section, you will need to bring headphones to listen to it. You will have as much time as you like to complete the written MAT. You will not need an appointment to take the written section, but you will need one appointment to have it graded.

_____ Take the oral MAT by scheduling an appointment with an instructor. It will be a one-on-one session in which you will complete one conversation and one situation, taken from the list below. Your score will be based on your instructor’s assessment of your skills in grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension.

Part I: Conversations

I.  Choix d'une profession. Quelle profession est-ce que vous avez choisie?  Pourquoi est-ce que vous avez choisi cette profession?  Quelles sont les qualités nécessaires pour réussir dans cette profession?  En plus, parlez des avantages et des inconvénients de la profession que vous avez choisie, et de ce qu'il faut faire pour réussir dans cette profession.

II.  Interview. Vous allez à un interview pour un poste de médecin (ou avocat, agent publicitaire, professeur, ou une autre profession de votre choix).  Présentez-vous à votre futur(e) patron(ne): vos qualités, vos aptitudes, votre expérience, les études que vous avez faites, pourquoi cette profession vous intéresse, etc.

III.  Quelques conseils. Vous avez un(e) ami(e) (joué(e) par votre professeur) qui a quelques problèmes.  Il/Elle vous demande des conseils.  Dites-lui ce qu'il faut faire dans les situations suivantes (Il faut que tu . . ., Il vaudrait mieux que tu . . .): Il/Elle a envie de quitter l'université.  Il/Elle n'a pas d'argent pour acheter des livres.  Il/Elle a l'intention d'aller en France l'année prochaine.  Il/Elle n'aime pas son/sa camarade de chambre.

I. Quel beau cadeau!
