In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, OSUN/COTC provides the following accommodations:• Alternate Test Locations• Extended Time• Test Scribes• Test Readers• Reduced Distraction Environments

The Tutoring Center, Testing Center, and Office of Disability Services (ODS) work together to provide these services for free.

Page 4: Module 2.6. Become familiar with test proctoring procedures. Understand the various student requirements during testing. Understand the ethics involved

Students must first go to ODS to obtain eligibility.

After attaining eligibility, a letter is given to the student who must then give a copy to his/her professors so that the necessary test accommodations can be made.

Another letter is sent to the Testing Center that gives permission for the student to test there.

Only students who have registered with ODS may get test accommodations.

No one is aware of the full extent of a student’s disabilities until we receive their eligibility information from ODS.

After receiving the information, the recommended support services are provided. This may include:• Extended Time• Test Readers• Test Scribes

Extended Time• Some students may have trouble

retrieving or processing information, in which case they may need additional time for their tests.

Test Readers• Some students may require that a test

be “orally administered” or read aloud.• This does not mean they cannot read,

but there is a “non apparent” disability that is interfering with their learning.

Page 7: Module 2.6. Become familiar with test proctoring procedures. Understand the various student requirements during testing. Understand the ethics involved

Test Readers• It is possible that their disability

interferes with their eyes, thought processing, or their learning style.

• When they hear the information it is a more efficient way for them to remember, acknowledge, make associative links, and produce answers.

Scribes• In the case of an impairment of mobility,

the student may need to have someone write down what he or she dictates.

• Keep in mind test proctors are only acting in place of the student’s pen or as a typist on a computer. They do not add words or rephrase things to “sound better.”

Try to arrive a little early as a courtesy.

Do not chew gum while administering a test.

A Testing Center staff member will inform the proctor about the student’s particular accommodations.

Log the beginning time on the Record Sheet. Put the date of the test on the outside of the folder.

Meet the test taker in the Testing Center, proceed with introductions, and go to the assigned room.

Ask the student if he/she would like an overview of the test.

Respond to questions pertaining to the test.

The proctor should seek a dictionary prior to returning the test to the Testing Center staff if he/she is unsure about his/her spelling.

If the student is writing the exam and asks the proctor how to spell something, tell the student to spell it as best they can and that this information cannot be provided.

Read exactly what is on the test.Ask the student to repeat his/herself

if something is not clear. Be certain the student was not misunderstood.

Provide an opportunity for the test taker to review the test provided the allotted time has not expired.

Because good essays demand fluency, the scribe’s job is to record the test taker’s dictation accurately without making the task more complicated. If a proctor does not know how to spell a word

or is unsure about punctuation, he/she may reference a dictionary after the test.

If the proctor is unsure of a technical word, he/she should ask the student how to spell it.

Do not offer additional services. Do not define any words or restate any

questions. Read only what is on the paper and write only what the student dictates.

Page 15: Module 2.6. Become familiar with test proctoring procedures. Understand the various student requirements during testing. Understand the ethics involved

Do not express fatigue during the test.

Do not prompt the test taker in any way that would result in a better response.

The guiding principle is that the administrator should neither help nor penalize the test taker.

Proctors should not allow students to manipulate them.

When proctoring a test, the proctor must collect and notify a Testing Center staff member before leaving the room for any reason.

If there is a problem with the test, the proctor does not need to finish the entire test before asking a question.

Do not offer services beyond what the student’s Record Sheet indicates.

Do not define, explain, or in any way interpret what a question means.
