[12] Professional Life story After completion of Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering in India I joined Indian Space Research Org. (ISRO) as satellite system integration engineer. I participated actively in the integration and testing of two satellites and managed the set up of a full fledged EMI/EMC test facility. Later I performed successfully as a Project Engineer of a satellite. This assignment involved satellite design, system integration, testing and launch co-ordination.

After the successful launch of the satellite I came to the United States and joined Electrical Engineering department of University of New Hampshire for a second Masters degree. There I completed MS degree in Electrical Engineering with a Bio-medical engineering project. This project was awarded continuation funding. But my desire to change major into semiconductor devices and Integrated circuit prompted me to leave

the university.

Afterwards I joined the Electrical Engineering department of the University of Arizona for my PhD. Realizing that the university has an elite Optical Science department I opted Optical Science as my minor. Opto-electronic Integrated Circuit (OP- IC) was just evolving with companies like AT&T (Lucent now) and was at its infancy. Pursuit of a novel dissertation in Opto-Electronic IC was very much enticing to me. With a lot of effort I managed to arrange a forced meeting between two Electrical Engineering professors and two Optical Science professors. The former did not show interest in the latter and the latter did not show interest in the former, at that time. To my great disappointment my plans to pursue an innovative Opto-electronic IC research did not materialize.

Another research field of interest to me was System_on_a_Chip (SOC). I started working with a professor in IC Packaging. Soon he left the university and I was again left with broken struggles.

Then I started working with an Electrical Engineering professor interested in Opto-electric optical modulator using exciton shift. We chose amorphous Silicon/Silicon-carbide multi quantum wells (MQW) for the modulator. With a borrowed PECVD (plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition) facility and non-ideal measurement facilities it took over two years to grow device quality MQW (multi-quantum wells). Soon the project was abandoned since we could not find exciton levels in these MQW. But from this research I studied extensively high efficiency Tandem solar cells using amorphous MQWs of silicon/silicon-carbide

I was always looking for a novel project with full of challenges. Eventually I took up a project with the Design and Simulation of strained Silicon-Germanium QW mosfet. This led to the Hetero-junction high mobility p-mosfet using Silicon/Silicon-Germanium junctions and strained SiGe QW.

Obviously my PhD dissertation took over six years due to all the above factors and the desire for novelty and challenge. I completed my PhD degree in Electrical Engineering with a major in Electrical Engineering and a joint minor in Optical Science and Microwaves. The PhD dissertation was the ‘Design and Simulation of Strained Silicon/Silicon-Germanium Hetero Junction MOSFET’.
