POTE’S NOTES Lady Pam and I want to thank everyone for their support and encouragement for a Great 2019. The year has started off with Membership meetings and planning for Moila’s future. February was the beginning. Jim Wion had us all engaged in Circus meetings and I will tell you he did a FABULOUS job. The Nobility came out and gave their all at the circus, and trust me it was well worth it. Pam and I would like to thank Ill. Mark and Nancy Craw-ford and Billie Williams for all of the work they put in to the Hospitality Room. Ill. Dave Brown was in charge of

the Grill so you know we were fed well. I would really like to Thank Shelby Pankau for everything he did also. Shelby literally empties out his facility and is right there every time to do what needs done. I appreciate you more than you know and I only have 4 words for you--“Have I Told You”!!! We will soon have an idea as to how our numbers were and will share with you at the Appreciation Dinner on March 22nd. A Special Thank You goes to Brenda and Shari in the Office for all of the Extra hours spent on all of the details most of us don’t even think about. Your Divan is currently working on plans for the Spring Ceremonial on Friday, May 3rd, and the area Lodges are busy with Degree Work. Things are looking good for a Great Class. We have to stop the bleeding and the Membership Committee is work-ing hard on Ideas and activities to enhance your experience at Moila. Friday Nights in Club Moila have been growing in numbers and the food is wonderful. So come out and enjoy the New Atmosphere and see why Moila is a great choice for your night out. I would like all of our Nobles to please remember that every one of you are part of the Membership Committee and are welcome to attend any of the meetings we have. Spring is just around the corner and Parade Season is creeping up on us quick. So make sure you remember to get your insurance to the Office so we can get you in the books. Thanks for Everything All of you do. MAKING DREAMS COME TRUE SINCE 1922 Ill. Mark Young

NOTE FROM THE DIVAN

We are very fortunate to have available to us the usage of social media. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, along with other social media platforms, allow us to communicate

with each other more efficiently, thus improving opportunities for fellowship. However, these same forms of communication can also be dangerous to our great fraternity. When postings

containing negative content are made, whether in regards to a brother noble or the fraternity in general, we are allowing that negativity to be viewed by the general public. These types of posts

can be extremely harmful to our great philanthropy. Please keep in mind who might be seeing your posts, and that the contents of social media should be governed by the same code of con-

duct as is used in the Lodges of Freemasons.

FROM YOUR CHIEF RABBAN

Dear Nobles and Ladies, first of all a big thanks to all of the men, women and kids who helped at our Circus this year. We had a great turnout and we all seem to come together and help for the good of Moila. Now let’s build on this positive event and start getting our fraternity back to having fun and helping kids.

Please remember that we need members and the new Membership Committee is trying to come up with ideas. We still could use some members on this committee to help. If you are interested in helping please contact Ill. Dave Ingersoll or any Divan member to join. We could use the help and any new ideas.

Hopefully, spring is coming as this has been a long winter. The Spring Ceremonial is coming up the first week in May and we need can-didates.

We have started a new club called the Rod and Gun Club and it is open to any member and lady. We are having our first meeting on March 14th. We would like to invite anyone interested to be a part of this new club.

Please remember that on April 27th the Shriners Hospital Golf Tournament will be held at Moila and the proceeds will go to our Trans-portation Fund. This event funds over half of the money we need each year for our kids, so it is very important for us to make this a success. I would like to thank Scott Mahoney and Kraig Arthur for chairing this event again. They do a great job and it is greatly appre-ciated.

Thanks again for being Moila Shriners,

Chief Rabban, Ill. Dan Baker

From the Recorder Greetings from the Recorder. First of all, I would like to thank all the Nobles and Ladies for their help with the Circus. Because of your dedication, the 66th annual Circus was a great success. Our communities in St Joseph and the sur-rounding area look forward to this every year and we did not disappoint. THANK YOU!!!!! At the end of February, our membership stands at 1263. Our Spring Ceremonial is scheduled for May 3rd & 4th. It will be a full weekend at Moila. Please check elsewhere in the Messenger for the full details and please get your petitions in to the office as soon as possible. Remember, Membership is the top priority for all Nobles. The long winter is over and activities will begin to pick up for Moila Shriners. Parade season is starting and is a great way to get exposure in our communities. Please participate in your unit/club meetings and social events. Also, please take advantage of the “best view” in St Joseph from our patio!! See you at the club! Yours in the Faith, Ill. Ken Dunlap, Recorder

FROM THE TREASURER

Put another extremely successful circus in the books! Our Nobles and Ladies really came together again to make our circus a huge

success. Our expert Circus Chairman (due to his outstanding training) did an excellent job and kept things running smoothly all

weekend. Thanks to everyone who came out and volunteered their time, that is really what makes our circus successful year after

year. I learned a lot in the counting room with our Recorder Ill. Sir Ken Dunlap. He has instructed me on the fine art of counting. He

instructed me how to count $1s, $10s, $20s, $50s, and even $100s, but I’m not sure about $5s, he doesn’t count those well.

Soon I will head to Tampa for the annual Shrine Treasurers Association Seminar to learn all I can, make some new friends, re-

connect with some old friends, and help make Moila the best it can be. I will represent you as best I can.

Again, I need to remind all the Units and Clubs that I need to get authorized on their bank accounts. I haven’t had much response to

this as of yet but I will keep trying. Please help out with this by notifying your bank and getting a signature card and dropping it by the

office if you can.

Almost all of the construction is finished now and we are looking forward to a great summer at Moila. If we could just get the weather

to straighten up we could be sitting on the patio enjoying our favorite beverages soon.

Thanks again for all of your hard work, and hope to see you all soon at Moila

H2, Treasurer

FROM YOUR ORIENTAL GUIDE

Greetings Nobles, I believe that Spring has finally sprung, soon the grass will be turning green, trees will be budding, and flowers will be in bloom. Signs of life anew will be all around us, so let us follow the Supreme Architect's lead and breathe some new life into our fraternity. I am sure each of you knows of at least one Brother who for some reason has fallen to the wayside. Please Brothers, pick up the phone and make a phone call to check on them, or better yet stop by their house and visit with them and show them we care about them and they are missed. Speak with your Lady, encourage her to talk to her friends and them to their husbands about Freemason-ry and Shrinedom and have them help us with recruitment! Remember the three R's Recruitment, Restoration, and Retention, not only do we need to bring more into the fold we need to work at keeping them interested and active once we get them. Remember back to when you took upon yourself your obligations and the way it made you feel. All it takes is a spark to start a raging fire, BE THAT SPARK !!!!! We will be having our Spring Ceremonial in just a few weeks, (the first weekend in May) let's really work to get some new members! We just finished with our annual Shrine Circus and had a great time--seeing all of the smiles on the faces of the kids is priceless and warms the heart. I would personally like to thank EACH AND EVERYONE who came out and helped, we could not have done this without you. My Lady Heather and I recently returned from the Oriental Guide Seminar and we both learned a LOT--we were very impressed with the staff as well as the curriculum. We would both like to thank you again for allowing us to serve you, the Nobility and Ladies of your Shrine. I am looking forward to seeing you at the Temple and parades which are just around the corner. Please feel free to approach my Lady or myself as well as any member of the Divan or their Ladies with any questions, concerns, or ideas you may have, you are the reason we are able to do what we do, SHRINERS HELP KIDS!!!! In closing I would like to leave you short poem that speaks volumes.

DO YOU JUST BELONG Are you an active member the kind that would be missed or are you just contented that your name is on the list? Do you attend the meetings and mingle with the flock or do you stay at home and criticize and knock? Until next time Brothers, yours in the faith, Douglas D Plowman

Do you take an active part to help the work along are you satisfied to be the kind that JUST BELONG? Do you ever go and visit a member that is sick or leave the work to a few and talk about the clique?

Think this over, member, you know right from wrong are you an active member or do you JUST BELONG? Joseph Servock

Well folks, February, thank goodness is just about gone. It has been a rough month to say the least. March 1st is

Friday and we are that much closer to spring.

The good news is the last week has seen us bounce back. We had a good turnout for Valentine’s dinner and from

what people have said, it was very good. The fish and chicken fry was great, yes we had a couple of problems but

Michelle and the kitchen crew got them fixed, and it was successful.

The best news was that bingo has come back after being called off a couple of times. We have had two good nights

and people are glad to be playing again. Plans for turkey days are ongoing and I know those guys will put on an ex-

cellent event, especially for the younger hunters.

We are starting to talk about fireworks and another great year in the barn.

I would be wrong if I didn’t mention the passing of a good friend of the club and Shriners all over, and that is Bob

Rockhold. I hope you keep Bob’s family in mind and say a little prayer for them.

That is it for now, let’s get some sunshine in and out of the club. Come on out and have a good supper at your club.

MEET YOUR NEW ASSISTANT RABBAN

Noble Danny “Dan” Smothers was elected as the 2019 Assistant Rabban for Moila Shriners at the February Temple

Meeting. Dan was born in Kansas City, Missouri, attended Center High School, and continued his education at The

University of Missouri-Kansas City. Noble Dan has been employed as a Vice-President at Bank of America for the

past twelve years.

He and his Lady Holly, who is a teacher, have three children, twins Bailee and Rilee, who attend NWMSU in

Maryville, and Jaynee, who is a junior in high school and plays hockey for the Dallas Stars Elite Hockey team.

Jaynee is looking to play women’s college hockey when she graduates from high school.

Besides his very active Masonic schedule, Dan keeps busy in a number of civic areas. You might recognize him

from the Bode Ice Arena and other area rinks, where he works part-time as a U.S. Hockey Referee, something he

has been doing for more than thirty years.

Noble Dan’s Masonic history goes back almost four decades as he was initiated into “The Mother Chapter, Order of

DeMolay” in 1982 and served as Master Councilor in 1986. He has received the Chevalier Degree, the Legion of

Honor, and the Cross of Honor. Dan was made a member of the International Supreme Council in 2001. He has

continued to serve as an advisor to DeMolay at the local, state and national levels on different committees and advi-

sorship roles.

Dan was raised a Master Mason in 1989, and served as Worshipful Master of Buckner Masonic Lodge #501 in 1993-

94. He also served on a number of committees at the Grand Lodge level.

Brother Dan has been extremely active in the York Rite Bodies since joining in 1989 as well. He served as High

Priest of Grandview Chapter #145 Royal Arch Masons, as Illustrious Master of Kansas City Council #45 Cryptic Ma-

sons and the state of Missouri as Grand Master of Cryptic Masons in 2009-2010. He served as Eminent Command-

er of Kansas City Knights Templar in 1995 and was elected a KYCH member in 1999. Dan has served as the head

officer of several other bodies including the Red Cross of Constantine, the York Rite College, Knight Masons, Allied

Masonic Degrees, and St. Thomas of Acon.

He is also a member of the Scottish Rite Valley of Kansas City, Missouri, where he was initiated to the 32nd

degree in

1989. Dan served as Venerable Master in 1998 and Commander of Council of Kadosh in 2017 and Treasurer of the

Valley for five years and Personal Representative for six years. He received the KCCH in 1999 and was coroneted a

33rd

degree Mason in 2007.

Noble Dan’s Masonic journey continued as he was created a Noble of

Ararat Shriners in 1989, where he served as Treasurer, Recorder,

Marshal and 2nd

Ceremonial Master serving on Ararat Shriners Divan

for eight years. He was active with several units and clubs and was a

Charter member of the Corvettes. Dan affiliated with Moila Shriners in

2016. He is a member of the Order of Quetzalcoatl and The Royal

Order of Jesters.

Dan and Holly are eager to join with the Nobility and Ladies in serving

the children of the Shriner’s Hospitals and working with Moila Shriners’

families.

We would like to welcome Noble Dan and Lady Holly to the Moila Di-

van and hope you will do so as well.
