design thesis:

“simple, happy, beautiful living” is an informal

magazine that teaches its readers about the elements

and principles of design in a fun and entertaining

way that a busy mother or career-goer could

understand. as you will see as you flip through the

pages, our colors, fonts, and pictures are easy to

read, recognize, and identify with. “simple, happy,

beautiful living” is a staple in ANY hip home as a

quick reference to keep you on track while

decorating, building, and remodeling your home. when

you finish reading, our hope is that you, no matter

who you are, will feel like a designer and go out in

the world with confidence in your home.

i simple, happy, beautiful living

i am the m in me, molly and emily designs. hopefully, this

magazine will show you “me” and allow you to understand

the simplicity of the elements and principles of design as i

have learned. being born and raised in rural georgia has

taught me much about my environment. i love the plantation

lifestyle and architecture that i grew up around and i don’t

think that will ever leave my system. although most of my

being is rooted here in the south, i am very much attracted

to new ideas about design. keeping it simple, keeping me

happy, and keeping my home beautiful is what my design

mind thinks about every day. in this magazine, we strive to

open the doors of our simple thinking minds (although the

doors of my mind may be painted pink) and allow you to see

in and feel like designers as you flip through the pages.

i am the E in me, molly and emily designs. the purpose of

this magazine is to make it easy for readers to understand

the elements and principles of design by providing a simple

way for people to read our magazine. i was born in

jacksonville, florida and have lived there my whole life.

fortunately i have grown up with the opportunity to enjoy

both city and rural life. even though i have grown up in

jacksonville, my whole life i have grown up riding horses

so i have probably spent half my life on the farm as

well. because horses and design are two important aspects

in my life, my goal is to one day design barns for horses.

this way i can incorporate both of the things i love into

one career. hopefully this magazine will show readers how

simple and easy design can be with the laidback style that

our magazine portrays.

Over the years designer trends have changed drastically. Sometimes these changes are

inspired by what is practical and sometimes they just occur because of a well known person’s

opinion. But for whatever reason they occur, people tend to take these changes very seriously

because they want to be able to keep up with the latest trends. This year it seems as though very

bright and vibrant colors are in style. Recently, whenever I have gone shopping, I have noticed that

most all apparel is being sold in almost every color of the rainbow including everything from

jeans, to sweaters and winter overcoats. I feel as though for a while the theme was to wear

monotones and muted colors as to not stand out too much, but now we are coming out of that

phase and into a phase where the goal is to stand apart from the crowd and not look the same as

everyone around you. Modern houses are now being decorated with bright colors as well instead

of just neutral furniture and colored accents. It is more common to see a bright red couch or

purple chair than it has ever been before. Another big trend in the design world now a days,

besides vibrant colors, is “going green”. This means trying to conserve natures recourses and

reduce the use of harmful chemicals. We are beginning to realize what negative effects we are

having on our planet and so now the theme is attempting to reverse those effects by going green.

New homes are now being built using natural resources and recycled materials, and with more

open window space to let in natural light, and use solar power energy instead of artificial lights,

so hopefully we will only need the use of artificial lights at night. Skye lights are also being put

current design trends MEmolly and emily designs

Page 9: molly and emily

in to replace ceiling lights as a way to naturally light up bathrooms and other rooms that cant

have many windows because of limited wall space. This cuts cost for people in this time of

economic depression while also helping to save the planet. Landscaping has also become very

popular over the years. It provides a great natural look to homes and helps to produce more

oxygen for the planet by planting more trees and plants. Going along with the all natural

theme, it is now becoming more frequent to see stone gardens instead of mulch or sod. Stones

are less expensive to use because they already exist so they are not man made and do not

contain harmful chemicals, like some sod and mulch can contain. Also there is less

maintenance with having a stone garden because it does not require any water or fertilizer to

survive. To advertise the green theme, the color green has become very popular as well. It

portrays the idea more efficiently to the general population because it gives a literal meaning to

it. All of these trends effect our everyday lives in one way or another weather we just see

them in passing or apply them to our own lives, it is important to understand the world and how

it is changing so that way we can make our best effort to understand it.

the straight horizontal

lines in this tall

dresser are very evident

in the drawers. straight

horizontal lines likes

these make a room more

clean cut and feel

more organized. using a

mix of straight and

curved lines create a

more comfortable,

traditional home feel.

straight vertical

in my home, space can sometimes

be an issue. having a tall vertical

cabinet such as this one is a good

way to add extra storage space

and provide a great look.

emily jones

“straight vertical lines have a

tendency to draw the eye up

and down making spaces look

and seem much more open. If

trying to make spaces look

more open and less crowded,

then adding taller more

narrow objects instead of

short fat object to a space is

a good idea

angular line

angular lines, like in this wood flooring, are

many times used to guide people through a

room. often times the pattern on the floor,

will dictate how quickly and in what direction

people will move through a room.

i like to see angular lines

either on the floor or

ceiling of busy hallways

because it helps show

people where to go and

move traffic along.

curved flowing line

these curved flowing lines are stories of a

huge building. Since this building is so big,

the curved lines make it more digestible for

the eye and make us more comfortable than

if they were straight lines with hard turns.

curved tightly

tightly curved lines,

such as railing on a

very purpose.

Page 17: molly and emily

smooth texture

something that has a

smooth texture is

something that feels

smooth to the touch.

this table is made of a

smooth wood that has

no rough edges or areas

on it. most people

prefer to have smooth

textured surfaces in

their home because of

the way that they look

and feel.

personally, i like the surfaces in my home to be

smooth because they are more inviting to touch

than a rough textured surface. emily jones

rough

texture

a rough texture is very commonly

found on rocks among nature.

the rocks underneath this water

would have a rough feel to them

them.

real texture

real texture is actual

texture that looks and

feels real. this brick

texture to it that you

may not know without

actually felling it.

mirko athens, georgia2c

Page 20: molly and emily

implied texture

implied texture is something

that looks like it has a

texture on it but to the touch

it is actually smooth. many

object have this type of

implied texture to give the eye

some contrast but at the

same time still gives such

objects such as walls, a

smooth feeling.

delta gamma athens, georgia2d

Page 21: molly and emily

non-reflective

texture

non-reflective texture,

such as this woven table, is

any type of texture that

does not reflect light,

weather it be natural or

created light. because of

the woven pattern on this

table it is not smooth

enough to reflect any light

that hits it.

scott residence athens, georgia

2e

Page 22: molly and emily

reflective texturethese picture frames are an

example of reflective

texture because with light,

they reflect anything that is

in front of them. they add

more character to the

frames because instead of

them always being one color

they can be a multitude of

colors depending on what

they are reflecting at the

time.

Page 24: molly and emily

positive

space

a solid piece of

furniture, such as this

couch, that takes up a

lot of positive space is a

good way to fill a large

empty room. it provides

enough furniture to the

room without causing the

space to look to

cluttered.

negative

spaceobjects that are

not solid, but

very open and

use in smaller

rooms because

they create

negative space

making smaller

rooms seem less

crowded.

geometric shape

a geometric shape is usually

a symmetrical shape like a

organic shapes come

from nature and do

organic shapes are

many famous pieces

of art are non

shapes. they are

exists, they are just

meant to be new and

unique.

static shapes are shapes

and elements in design that

are not moving. in design,

static elements in a room

are fixed permanently.

these examples of static

shapes are found commonly

in older, historic houses.

the shapes may appear to be

moving in space, but

actually they permanently

fixed to the ceilings, walls,

and doors in these houses.

natural form

I like to add flowers to my house because

they are a nice way to add color and

variety. emily jones

natural forms, such as

flowers, are a great

way to add variety to

any room because they

are simple enough, but

at the same time can

add a bit of a flare.

they also give a home a

more natural look

because they are

bringing the outside in.

abstract form as a whole may not be

recognized as something we know, but part of it

we may be able to recognize from nature and

scale determines the

size of something based

on how big or small it

is compared to other

things of the same kind.

for example, you can

determine how big a car

is based on how it

compares to other cars.
