Annual Report for 2014 | 1 | Charles E. Smith Life Communities

In 2014, we remembered the past as we transformed our boardroom and created Building the Community, an exhibit honoring Charles E. Smith. Smith’s keen eye for development, hands-on community leadership, and extraordinary philanthropy brought us to Rockville in 1969 and became the catalyst for our subsequent growth.

In 2014, we made a positive impact on the present with the launch of the ElderSAFE Center, the first program of its kind in the area providing advocacy, education, and temporary shelter to safeguard seniors from abuse.

In November, we acquired the Federation building adjacent to our campus, soon to be renamed the Elsie and Marvin Dekelboum Building. The generous gift from the Elsie and Marvin Dekelboum Family Foundation that allowed us to make this purchase enables us to focus on the immediate future, as we plan to refresh the building and move administrative staff into new quarters, freeing up space within our existing residences to expand and enrich resident services.

This report also marks a personal milestone for each of us: As chair, this is the conclusion of my two-year term, and I turn the reins over to my

capable successor, Joseph Hoffman. I look with pride at our achievements, including awards for quality care throughout our organization, architectural honors for Cohen-Rosen House, and a transformed Post-Acute Care Center. For me, every moment has mattered.

As President/CEO, 2014 marked my 20th anniversary with this amazing organization. This is an opportunity beyond the scope of this annual report to see how we have grown and thrived, strengthened our financial position, expanded our scope of services, become a center of expertise in aging, and solidified our structure into a respected healthcare system. Most significantly, we have improved the quality of care and enhanced the quality of life for seniors and their families, and become a better place to work for all of our staff.

All of these moments have created a vital and vibrant organization, and reflect the contributions of everyone associated with it. We invite you to continue with us on this journey under the leadership of Chair Joseph Hoffman, and to participate with us in moments that matter.

that matterMomentsThe milestones of 2014 show how moments from our past, our present, and our future converge to define who we are and what we do.

Donations are used to support resident care and services, launch new initiatives, renew our residences, and enhance our endowment for a secure future — all memorable moments.

For their extraordinary support of Charles E. Smith Life Communities, the Elsie and Marvin Dekelboum Family Foundation was honored with the 2014 Hymen Goldman Award in December. Their gifts have transformed the Post-Acute Care Center at the Hebrew Home, including the gym, family lounge, and dining room, and helped purchase the former Federation building adjacent to our campus.

The following list represents contributions of $500 or more made January 1 through December 31, 2014. Every effort has been made to ensure accuracy. Please contact us at 301.770.8409 with any corrections.

“They become more than my friends. They become like a family, like grandparents. They’re older; they’re wiser. Some will get better and go home, and some, unfortunately . . . we lose.” — Michelle Simpson, geriatric nursing assistant

“We feel that the quality care provided to the elderly by Charles E. Smith Life Communities is heartfelt and people-centered. On a personal note, our gift annuities helped us diversify our retirement income, and the charitable deductions helped lower our taxable income. — Sheldon Lampert and Marilyn Schimpf

Builders of the Future Society members have taken steps today to benefit our residents into the future. They have created legacies in their wills, through charitable gift annuities, and by naming Charles E. Smith Life Communities and the Hebrew Home as a beneficiary of a trust, retirement plan, or insurance policy. We appreciate each of these generous commitments.

that matter are created by dedicated volunteersMoments2014 GUARDIAN CAMPAIGN COMMITTEEEvery year since 1958, the members of the Guardian Campaign Committee have appealed to the community to support our mission to ensure that the 1,000 older adults who call our campus home live active and meaningful lives by providing the best in nursing and rehabilitative care, engaging programs, and spiritual enrichment.

We are grateful to these dedicated volunteers who raised $920,000 in 2014 to benefit residents of Charles E. Smith Life Communities.

HAROLD AND SHIRLEY ROBINSON H2YP YOUTH PHILANTHROPY PROGRAMThe Harold and Shirley Robinson H2YP Youth Philanthropy Program’s innovative curriculum offers local high school students an in-depth view of the many services on our campus and provides teens with the opportunity to play an active role as philanthropists and decision-makers for grants to benefit campus residents. In 2014, the group funded a new computer for Revitz House’s Internet Café, a poster enlarger/printer for staff education and public notices, a new computer and Brain Fitness software and tablet apps for our memory care program, the community garden program at Revitz House, and tickets to cultural events throughout the area for Hebrew Home residents.

OUR NAMECharles E. Smith Life Communities takes its name from a visionary leader in the Washington community.

Charles E. Smith (1901-1995) was a persuasive philanthropist who generously supported the most vulnerable in our society. As president of the Hebrew Home from 1959-1962, he boldly laid the groundwork for the Home’s 1969 move to the current Rockville campus.

Recognizing the need for continued philanthropic support and the emerging scope of care on our campus, his family, Robert H. (of blessed memory) and Clarice Smith, Robert P. and Arlene Kogod, and their families, made an extraordinary $12 million investment in our future. Our organization’s name, adopted in May 2006, unites our entities, sustains the vision and leadership of Charles E. Smith, and honors the legacy of a remarkable leader.

In 2014, Building a Community, an exhibit of artifacts curated from his personal office, was dedicated at the Wasserman Residence to inspire future generations.

“To me, it’s a blessing for residents

to welcome you into their lives and to let

you be part of that. It’s an honor to be able to take care of people like that every single day, and

in the very last stage of their life, for me

to touch them in that way, to be of comfort, is incredibly meaningful.” — Elisa Gil-Pires, MD, vice president, Medical Affairs
