MONA at a glance MONA is ENVINET’s mobile spectroscopic detection and survey system for vehicle or airborne use. It is able to detect smallest amounts of artificial radiation in the environment, coming from potential threats like nuclear incidents or accidents, non-authorized usage of sources used in medical application or in the industry, or other incidents in connection with radioactive materials, e.g. during transportation or in case of terroristic attacks. MONA is used by mobile emergency response teams for the detection and localization of radiation and contamination in the environment. The system acquires the gamma spectra and identifies the isotopes, calculates the total gamma dose rate as well as the dose rate for each identified nuclide. It compares the measured and calculated results against predefined alarm levels and uses GPS data to assign the actual monitoring location to the related data records and spectra. The complete data set is stored in a local database. The nuclide-related data are displayed on an included laptop in the vehicle as color-coded tracks on a map, and are linked to spectra, waterfall diagrams, graphs and tables, thus easing the identification and localization of any contamination in the field. Measured tracks and isotope information can be transmitted to the monitoring center as well, using cellular networks like 3G or LTE (satellite as an option) in order to provide online information to radiation protection specialists and decision makers, to take action and manage countermeasures. The monitoring center based on ENVINET’s server application NMC can display and compare survey results from numerous survey vehicles simultaneously. MONA uses a high sensitive large volume NaI(TI) scintillation detector. Optionally, the system can be extended with up to three auxiliary detector of smaller or larger size (max. 4 liter scintillator detector), e.g. to cover a larger range for spectroscopic measurements or to support airborne applications. If several spectroscopic gamma detectors are used directional information can
be provided. A Geiger-Mueller based gamma dose rate detector for the high dose rate range and a neutron detector for neutron survey are available as an option, too.
MONA consists of two parts; the self-contained detection unit in a sealed cabinet and the laptop. The detection unit can be either installed outside the vehicle, typically on the roof of the car or inside of the vehicle. For additional protection and to avoid attracting attention, the detection unit can be integrated in a top box mounted on top of the car. No wired connection is needed between the detection units. The detection unit can be powered from its integrated rechargeable battery for approx. 24 hours.

2 Product Overview
2.1 MONA System Overview
MONA system consists of at least one spectroscopic gamma detector, an optional gamma detector MIRA and an optional internal or external neutron detector. The system is operated by a laptop that is used to configure the MONA and the data management and data visualization.
The MONA laptop communicates with the detector system over WiFi (Ethernet is also possible1). One spectroscopic gamma detector unit is configured as central unit and is the counterpart of the communication for the laptop. Up to three additional spectroscopic gamma detectors, one gamma dose rate detector MIRA and a neutron detector can be connected to this central unit. GPS is used for position finding.
Over GPRS/UMTS/LTE the laptop can communicate with a monitoring center and a remote administration over remote desktop is

the system, the Ethernet device is not accessible, because the MIRA uses this device.
implemented. In addition, a data exchange to a monitoring center is possible.

2.1.1 The Spectroscopic Gamma Detector The MONA system uses scintillator detectors as spectroscopic gamma detectors. The maximum size is a four litre detector. The system supports up to four scintillators of different size and type e.g. it is possible to combine a high sensitive four litre NaI(Tl) detector with a high resolution 2”x2” LaBr3(Ce). Using different sized detectors it is possible to extended the measurement range
because larger detectors have in general a lower upper limit. The detector is placed inside a hermitical housing and uses a photomultiplier as light sensor for the light emission by the scintillator crystal. To protect the detector against mechanical vibrations and thermal shocks a foam is used. The detector is calibrated to H*(10).
2.1.2 The Gamma Dose Rate Detector MIRA The optional MIRA gamma detector is designed to measure the ambient gamma dose rate H*(10) from 10 nSv/h up to 10 Sv/h. The used detectors are two Geiger
Mueller tubes. One tube is for the low dose rate level and the other is for the high dose rate level. The MIRA is calibrated to H*(10).
2.1.3 The Neutron Detector The optional 3He neutron detector can be integrated as internal solution with a diameter of 25.4 mm and an active length of 150 mm. The pressure is 2 bar. The external solution
is normally connected over RS 232 to the MONA. The dimension and pressure of the external neutron s. specification section.
2.2 Theory of Operation The MONA is designed to be operated as mobile monitoring system mounted on a car or helicopter/airplane. MONA is a scalable solution which allows to uses up to four MONA gamma spectrometer, one gamma dose rate detector (MIRA) and neutron detector. One MONA gamma detector acts as central unit that communicate with the NMC system on the laptop over WiFi. This central unit also provides the power supply for all other detectors.
After the ON button is pressed on the MONA central unit and the NMC is started. The MONA performs a warm up period. In this period the system is checked, the initial calibration of the spectroscopic gamma detectors is performed and the system waits
for a GPS signal. After the warm up is finished a measurement can be started using the NMC interface of the laptop which is used as software package.
The initial calibration of the spectroscopic gamma detector consists of determination of the detector temperature to locate the initial region of the nuclide line used as reference for energy calibration. The energy calibration is designed to ensure a fixed energy to channel relation. Every minute the position of the reference nuclide is checked and the gain of the MCA is adjusted to keep the reference nuclide at the same channel position.
After the initial warm up is finished a track measurement can be started. During the measurement the total gamma dose rate

H*(10), nuclide identification and also nuclide specific gamma dose rate is evaluated on a
configured time interval.
2.3 User Interface The user interface of the MONA system is a user friendly interface based on a web browser application running on the laptop. The user interface provides all configuration possibilities that are needed for normal operation. The measured data are shown in real time in graphs, map and waterfall diagram. On the screen also alarming are indicated.
The collected data can be easily exported to other monitoring network software as NMC that provides a corresponding import function. The software provides various configuration and displaying options like user configurable color scales for the track to indicate the dose rate level at a given location.
