From the PrincipalDear Parents

As we draw closer to the end of the year I would like to thank the community for your support during 2018. Mona Vale is a wonderful example of Public Education, we are a school that values students, staff and our community. Looking ahead, 2019 will be an exciting year for the school with a number of exciting projects set to be announced.

School Supplied Lunch 2019We have a number of students each day who forget to bring their lunch with them to school. From next year, students who do not have lunch with them will need to tell their class teacher who will provide them with a lunch slip. This slip is to be taken to the canteen and the student will be given a sandwich. As a school, we will keep a record of students accessing this support and ensure that their family is made aware that their child/children has arrived at school without food. As always, those families experiencing financial hardship should contact myself for a confidential discussion regarding assistance.

Armistice: Before and AfterI had the pleasure of attending the launch of the book Armistice: Before and After, a collation of recollections by family members of relatives who served in the Great War.

The book contains the story of Fredrick William Brown and was written by Harry P, Year 5 and proudly tells the story of his great grandfather. The afternoon, hosted by Computer Pals for Seniors and Nan Bosler OAM, who authored the book, spoke of the wonderful support she always receives from Mona Vale Public School. I am personally proud of our involvement in the project and our interaction with seniors within our community.

Congratulations Harry.

Christmas Bus Wrap!!Ho, ho ho, Merry Christmas! How exciting we have been asked to decorate one of Mona Vale depots’ buses for Christmas. The bus will arrive next Thursday, at 11:30am and 20 - 30 of our Art Club students will be given one hour to decorate it. Our bus will represent Mona Vale Depot in a Sydney wide competition with two Mona Vale students being invited to the judging at Clovelley.

CongratulationsI would like to congratulate Mrs Kirsten Zeelie on her appointment to Mona Vale as a School Administration Officer. Kirsten has worked in a temporary capacity with us for the past two years and has been a wonderful asset to the school. We are thrilled to have her on-board for 2019.

Regards

Parliament House

School Leaders visit to Parliament HouseOn Monday 19th November, Xavier P and Amelia T, our 2018 School Captains, along with their proud parents, attended a morning tea reception at Parliament House, Macquarie Street Sydney.

They were the invited guests of Mr Rob Stokes, Member of Parliament for Pittwater, and State Education Minister. The reception included a delicious morning tea, a tour of Parliament House, the presentation of Certificates of Appreciation to all School Captains in the Pittwater electorate and an opportunity for the students to address the Legislative Assembly with their thoughts and experiences as a school leader.

I felt very proud to accompany these two wonderful ambassadors of Mona Vale Public School. Well done Xavier and Amelia, it has been a pleasure to work with you and the 2018 Leadership team this year.

Christmas Carols

Christmas Carols Christmas Carols community event is Thursday 6th December on Waratah oval. It is a wonderful event to come along and sit with friends and family and reflect on what a great year we have had at Mona Vale in 2018.

You, as the parents will be responsible for your child for the entire evening and ensuring their behaviour is respectful and responsible. Students will not be allowed to come to the event without a parent, or a responsible adult to look after them. The teachers ARE NOT on duty this evening. Thanks for your cooperation in this regard as your children’s safety is always our number one priority.

K-2 will drop their children to the K-2 Cola at 5pm and after they have performed their item there will be a pick up spot for you to collect your child.

3-6 just need to arrive at 5:00pm find a spot on the grass with their families, perhaps enjoy some snacks and await their grade to be called for their item. Grade items should run from 5:30pm-6:45pm and then we will enjoy some sing-a-long carols together. So bring your singing voices and a device as the words will all be on our website.

All students should come dressed in casual comfortable clothes with a Christmas theme. E.g. Xmas t shirts, green/red/white etc. Santa hats, reindeer ears etc.

Please see attached flyer for more information. Please keep your fingers crossed for a lovely sunny evening.

See you there at 5pm for a 5:30pm start.

Kind regards

Jacqui ShawCreative Arts Coordinator

Mona Vale Public School

Ethics classes at Mona Vale Public School

We urgently need new teachers. If you value our Primary Ethics program at MVPS, please

volunteer!

Kindergarten classes – Tuesdays 8.55-9.25am

Year 3 class – Tuesdays 9.25-9.55am

Year 5 class – Tuesdays 9.55-10.25am

Dear Parents and Carers,

As you know from your child’s participation last year, we have a thriving philosophical ethics program at

Mona Vale Public School (MVPS) for classes K-6. Ethics classes teach children how to evaluate evidence

and use reasoning to make decision.

Ethics classes are held during the Special Religious Education (Scripture) time each week (30 minutes)

and are available to children not enrolled in Scripture. In Primary Ethics classes, children learn how to

think logically, disagree respectfully and support their arguments with evidence, rather than act according

to blind habit or peer pressure.

We are very fortunate at MVPS to have a dedicated group of volunteers who together deliver 17 classes

each week during the Scripture/Ethics time (Tuesday mornings)! We need at least 4 new teachers to be

able to continue the program at this level.

Ethics teachers receive full training by Primary Ethics, the not-for-profit organisation approved by the

NSW State Government to design curriculum and training for the ethics program. Training consists of a

two-day workshop and short online modules. Lesson materials are provided. Suitable volunteers have an

interest in children’s education and development of critical thinking skills and must be available on

Tuesday mornings each week.

Please visit www.primaryethics.com.au or contact [email protected] to find out how you

can become an ethics teacher .

I look forward to hearing from you!

Michelle Eggins
