CHRISTMAS GIFT DONATIONS – will be collected on Wednesday 8th December.
Even though we are not having a “Christmas Carol Evening” this year, we will still be collecting gifts for charity for those parents who would like to donate. You can place your gift under the Christmas Tree (or box) in the office.
Gifts will be collected by Wiseberry Mona Vale, to give to children from Stewart House and Bear Cottage. Donations are required for children between 6 -17 years old.
Unwrapped in a gift bag is best as all gifts need to be checked for suitablilty. Please avoid toys that need too many batteries. New items only and please no food.
Thank you for your support.

White Ribbon
White Ribbon
Mona Vale Public School came together last week to acknowledge White Ribbon Day. Every child made an individual ‘white ribbon’ and stuck it to the school’s fence to show the community that we, as a school, are doing our part to build Respectful Relationships
Special thanks to Phil, Austin T and Mr Kelson for organising the photo and video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d_y0Qt47DyM&sns=em; a powerful image to remind us all that we are a White Ribbon School and we will stand up, speak out and act!

Chess
Chess Club Pizza PartyTo celebrate the end of the year, the Chess Club is having a pizza party!
When: Wednesday 7 December 2016.Time: Lunchtime - from first bell. Remember not to pack a lunch!Where: Outside the back of the hall for pizza and then inside for some friendly games of chess.
All students who were members at any time this year are welcome to come along. There is no cost. Parent volunteers and anyone interested in volunteering for chess club are also welcome to come along.
Planning for Chess in 2017Next year, due to other commitments, I will be handing over the role of Chess Chair. If there is anyone interested in becoming more involved with Chess Club, taking on a role or joining the committee, please send me an email.
The highlight for me this year was to see how much the kids enjoy playing chess. We all know chess is good for the brain and strategic thinking, but it’s also great to see the kids have fun, work together in teams and support each other.
By becoming involved in Chess Club, I have also gained a much better understanding of the P&C. They are a handful of amazing parents who generously give their time and skills to help our kids and our school. It’s great to be a part of P&C activities and the kids get so much out of seeing their parents involved in their world at school.
Let me know if you would like to join in and become more involved.

Live Life Well
Food Waste
Each year, around $7.8 million on food is thrown away in Australia. Try these tips to minimise your food waste at home:
• Plan meals in advance so that you only buy what you need • Store food correctly for optimal life • Start a compost for fruit and vegetables • Use reusable drink bottles • Take your own bags to the supermarket

Pre and Pro-BioticsBy Amanda McCredie
Humans have a mind blowing 100 trillion microbes living in and on our bodies. They outnumber our cells by ten to one. The relationship we have with our gut microbes has evolved over millions of years and it is becoming increasingly clear that microbes play a fundamental role in maintaining our health. Ideally, our gut should be home to a great diversity of microorganisms with the majority of organisms being beneficial to the body. This where pre and probiotics come into play in our daily diet. The following factors have affected the variety and number of beneficial bacteria in our gut: - stress - overuse of antibiotics- an increase in caesarean sections (one in three births) - the consumption of highly processed food - the increase in environmental toxins
Live Life WellSo what effect does this depletion have on our microbiome and how do pre and probiotics help? What we know thus far is that the digestive microbes play an important role in maintaining human health. The microbiome protects us from invaders by crowding out harmful bacteria. They also assist in synthesizing vitamins and hormones. They are involved in detoxification and help to maintain the immune system. If the beneficial gut microorganisms have been depleted, an imbalance in gut bacteria occurs. Pathogenic microbes and toxins may attack the gut wall, allowing only partially digested food to enter the bloodstream. This situation may contribute to the onset of food allergies and intolerances. Our microbiome also changes with age and it also requires a large diversity so that particular bacterial strains support our specific age related function.
ProbioticsProbiotics are live bacteria which are good for our health, especially our digestive system (the gut). We usually think of bacteria as something that can cause disease or infection. But your body is full of all types of bacteria, both good and bad. Probiotics are often called “good” or “helpful” bacteria because they help keep your gut and body healthy.
Like all ‘living’ things – probiotics are named with a genus, species and strain – and this is where it gets interesting – the benefit and effectiveness of a probiotic is only (and completely) determined by the strain.
The other thing that is very important to understand is that different strains have varying roles in the body. We liken this to dogs and differing breeds. All dogs are animals (genus), canines (species), but the different breeds (strains) have completely different characteristics. You wouldn’t use a Chihuahua as guard dog if you could get a German Shepherd!
Mrs Kristy WaterhouseYear 3 Teacher
Live Life WellSimilarly, you wouldn’t use a probiotic strain that has been scientifically proven to be effective for adult irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) to boost beneficial flora to decrease the severity of atopic dermatitis (eczema) in children. It just doesn’t work like that!
So what foods are naturally full of probiotics…- Yoghurt- Fermented vegetables (think sauerkraut, pickles) - Miso soup- Kefir- Kombucha- Sourdough bread- Tempeh- Probiotic supplements
If you are going to take a probiotic supplement, it is very important to get a good quality probiotic, as many of the brands don’t even contain live bacteria! There is a big difference between practitioner brands and over-the-counter products.
Prebiotics Prebiotics are non-digestible food fibres that feed the good bacteria or probiotics. The more food, or prebiotics, that probiotics have to eat, the more efficiently these live bacteria work and they also discourage the growth of harmful organisms. The combination of both pre and pro biotics equals a healthier and happier gut.
You are probably already ingesting prebiotics but don’t even know it! Prebiotics naturally exist in many foods that hopefully we are already consuming on a regular basis. Foods that are high in fibre are also typically high in prebiotics so if we are all eating our recommend 35g of fibre a day we should all be providing our guts with good sources of prebiotics to build a healthy micro biome in conjunction with our probiotics.
Foods that are naturally high in prebiotics are:- Artichokes- Garlic- Leeks- Onions- Asparagus- Unripe Bananas- Wheat Bran
