Roglic takes control as Tour turns into Slovenian taleREUTERS — LARUNS

Primoz Roglic took command of the Tour de France despite narrowly losing out to fellow Slovenian Tadej Pogacar on the ninth stage as Briton Adam Yates’s limits were exposed in the second mountain test yesterday.

The Slovenian played it safe on the last climb of the day but it was enough for him to move to the top of the standings in a ninth stage won by Tour deb-utant Pogacar.

The 21-year-old Pogacar, the most attacking rider on the final climb up to the Col de Marie Blanque, outsprinted Roglic and breakaway rider Marc Hirschi of Switzerland to move up to seventh overall, 44 seconds off the pace.

“It was an amazing day, I gave everything in the last climb but I could not drop my rivals. But the stage win makes up for it,” said Pogacar, who finished third overall in his grand tour debut on the Vuelta last year.

"I wanted to gain as much time as possible," said Pogacar, who twice lost time earlier in the week, but is now within 41 seconds of the lead.

"Ten seconds bonus for the stage win in the sprint is great but I don't know what hap-pened in it," he said breathlessly.

Pogacar had a message of consolation for his 30-year-old countryman Roglic.

"He's won before and he'll win again. He and I can achieve great things for Slovenia," he said.

Defending champion Egan Bernal finished in the five-man

leading group and sits in second place overall, 21 seconds behind Roglic. Yates, who made no mystery of his limited ambitions on the Tour, ended the stage in 15th place, 54 seconds off the pace, and dropped down to eighth overall.

As the race heads into its first rest day, when all the riders will be submitted to a corona-virus test, Roglic sits in pole position but Colombian Bernal, who relishes the long climbs of

the Alps coming in the third week, is also where he wanted to be.

After attacking on the final climb on Saturday, Pogacar was on the offensive again on the ascent to the Col de Marie Blanque, a 7.7-km effort at an average gradient of 8.6%, but Roglic, Bernal and Spain’s Mikel Landa followed.

Roglic picked up a five-second bonus at the top of the pass, situated 18 kilometres from the finish, and the small group caught former Under-23 world champion Hirschi 2.5 km from the line.

Pogacar was the fastest man to the line as he gained back more time back after losing 1:20 in the crosswinds on Friday.

France’s Guillaume Martin, who started the day second overall, slid down to third, 28 seconds off the pace, after losing touch with the top guns on the ascent to the Col de Marie Blanque.

The day after Thibaut Pinot lost all hope of becoming the first local winner of the Tour in 35 years, another Frenchman, Romain Bardet, was sitting in fourth place overall, 30 seconds behind Roglic.

Team Jumbo-Visma rider Primoz Roglic of Slovenia reacts after finishing the stage yesterday.

The pack rides during the 9th stage of the 107th edition of the Tour de France cycling race, 154 km between Pau and Laruns, yesterday.

The Slovenian played it safe on the last climb of the day but it was enough for him to move to the top of the standings in a ninth stage won by Tour debutant Pogacar.

Isles rout Flyers to reach the NHL Conference finalAFP — TORONTO

Thomas Greiss made 16 saves and four New York players scored as the Islanders beat the Philadelphia Flyers 4-0 on Saturday to reach the NHL Eastern Conference final.

The Flyers had fought back from a 3-1 series deficit in the NHL’s quarantine hub in Toronto, forcing game seven with back-to-back overtime wins.

But the Islanders controlled the decisive contest to reach the conference final for the first time since 1993.

They’ll open against the Tampa Bay Lightning in Edmonton on Monday, with a chance to reach the Stanley Cup final for the first time since 1984.

Brock Nelson had a goal and two assists, and Scott May-field, Andy Greene and Anthony Beauvillier scored for the sixth-seeded Islanders.

Greiss replaced Semyon Varlamov, who had started 14 of the Islanders’ first 15 post-season games, and produced the first playoff shutout of his career. Mayfield gave the Islanders a 1-0 lead at 9:27 of the first period with a rising shot that made it under the crossbar.

Defenseman Greene made

it 2-0 at 13:13 with a goal from the left circle. Derick Brassard set things up, holding the puck on the right until he spied Green in the opposite circle.

Nelson scored to make it 3-0 at 11:26 of the second period, finishing a two-on-one off a feed from Josh Bailey.

Bailey added another assist on Beauvillier’s empty-net goal at 13:12 of the third period after Flyers coach Alain Vigneault pulled Carter Hart -- who made 22 saves -- for an extra skater.

New York held the Flyers to 16 shots, killing off both of Phil-adelphia’s power-play opportu-nities to take their penalty kill to 13-for-13 in the series.

The last time the Islanders reached the conference final they fell in five games to the eventual Stanley Cup champion Montreal Canadiens.

New York Islanders players celebrate their team's 4-0 victory against the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Flyers had fought back from a 3-1 series deficit in the NHL’s quarantine hub in Toronto, forcing game seven with back-to-back overtime wins.

But the Islanders controlled the decisive contest to reach the conference final for the first time since 1993.

Nuggets thump Clippers as Raptors down Celtics again

AFP — MIAMI

The Denver Nuggets bounced back with a vengeance on Saturday, powering to a 110-101 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers to even their NBA play-off series 1-1.

It was all-square between the Toronto Raptors and Boston Celtics, too, after the Raptors notched a second straight win, 100-93, to knot their Eastern Conference semi-final series 2-2 in the NBA’s quarantine bubble in Orlando, Florida.

The Nuggets, routed 120-97 in game one of the Western Conference series on Thursday, turned the tables with a blis-tering first half in which they led by as many as 23 points.

“Game one, we were tired. I hate to admit it, but we were tired,” said guard Jamal Murray, who led Denver with 27 points.

“We came out sloppy, came out exhausted, fatigued. We didn’t make any shots, we didn’t get back on defense.

Nikola Jokic added 26 points and 18 rebounds for Denver, who had rallied from a 3-1 deficit to beat the Utah Jazz in seven games in the first round.

The two -- who combined for 27 points in game one -- had a total of 26 between them by the end of the first quarter as the Nuggets took a 44-25 lead.

It was 72-56 at half-time, and the Nuggets were up by 12 going into the final quarter.

The NBA champion Raptors, who won game three against

the Celtics on Thursday on OG Anunoby’s buzzer-beating three-pointer, clamped down defensively to win again, holding the Celtics to 20 percent shooting from three-point range while draining 17 three-pointers themselves.

Pascal Siakam shook off a slow start to score 23 points as the NBA champion Toronto Raptors levelled the series.

Kyle Lowry scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds with

seven assists for the Raptors, who won their second straight game and will try to gain the upper hand in the best-of-seven Eastern Conference series for the first time in game five on Monday.

Serge Ibaka connected on seven of nine shots from the floor to score 18 points off the bench for Toronto and Fred VanVleet added 17 points, six rebounds and six assists for the Raptors.

Jayson Tatum scored 24 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the Celtics. Kemba Walker added 15 points But Boston connected on just seven of 35 three-point attempts. Jaylen Brown struggled mightily, making just two of 11 from beyond the arc and just four of 18 overall in a 14-point performance.
