New Hampshire is the first primary, Iowa has the first caucus.

Its real importance comes from the massive media coverage it receives

It is testing grounds for who will be the front-runner.

As lower-population states without a major metropolitan area, IA and NH somehow represent the median American opinion

Interest Groups: An Overview

The term interest group refers to virtually any voluntary association that seeks to publicly promote and create advantages for its cause

Have grown rapidly since the 1960.

Examples of interest groups?

Institutional v. Membership Interests

Institutional Interests are individuals or organizations representing other organizations.

I.e: General Motors

Usually interested in bread-and-butter issues

They do not just represent business, but also governments, foundations and universities.

We have a reputation as a nation of joiners.

What is this a reflection of?

We are more likely than Europeans to think that organized activity is an effective way to influence the national government.

Incentives to Join

Solidary Incentives: Sense of pleasure/companionship that arises our of meeting together in small groups.

Material Incentives: Money or things valued in monetary terms.

They provide members low-cost life insurance, mail-order discount drugs, group travel plans…

Purposive v Ideological Incentives

Purposive: A benefit that comes from serving a cause or principle.

Ideological Interest Groups: Political organizations that attract members by appealing to their political convictions or principles.
