Dear Parents, This has been a very sad week for London and the UK with the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower. You will know by now that Oscar, one of our Westway bus drivers, lived in that block though thankfully he is safe and well. He has lost everything, yet the Wetherby community has rallied round this week with a collection at Church this morning and again at the fete this afternoon. As just one individual affected, he is so appreciative of our collective efforts and expresses heartfelt thanks to the many of our parents who have been in touch and coordinated donations. When things are this close to home and connected so tangibly with our School, a tragedy such as this has an even deeper resonance. I am only thankful that we are doing something practical. On a brighter note, I congratulate all of our Common Entrance boys who have had their results today. The marks this year were our best ever and, whilst grade boundaries may differ across the schools we feed, our view is that this group have outperformed all previous exit groups. Well done to the Class of 2017! Another ‘vintage year group’ for the Prep School was the ‘Class of 2012’ - so many characters and personalities and a group of boys that lives long in the memory. I was delighted then to see one of them this week, Sebastian Brindle, who wants to work here as a Gap Student next year, having finished his five years at Eton. Sebastian was, and is, a great lad - a true Wetherby boy; he will be a superb role model for our boys next year. Hopefully, he might be joined by Charlie Stranack and Sammy DaCosta, from the same year group, in Gap positions next year. It will be just like old times! The more things change, the more they stay the same... Very much looking forward to two big events later today: the Fete in Bryanston Square for the Prep and our Headmaster’s Dinner at the Italian Embassy. Dinner jacket dusted off for another glamorous Wetherby occasion. Tough job this… Have a good weekend,

Citizen of the Week
This week’s Citizen of the Week is George S in 5T. George goes above and beyond in all lessons but it is for his striking interest in the art works of others at this week’s Art Exhibition that he is commended. George demonstrated such a keen critical eye and clearly admired what his peers had produced, always finding something of interest in every piece viewed. Well done, George!
Sportsman of the Week This week’s Sportsman of the Week is Laurence F in 7M. Achieving a superb 46 not out this week against St. Paul’s, Laurence is a quick-thinking and able batsman for his team. He was described as a key figure in our rowing squad; he is talented on football and rugby pitch alike; strong at swimming; in fact Laurence is a truly rounded athlete who loves his sport. Well done, Laurence!
From the English Department – Upper School Poetry Recital Finals
Huge congratulations are in order to all the finalists who took part in today’s Upper School Poetry Recital Finals. I was so proud listening to such talent and impressed at how well all the boys knew their poems. The winner was Sava S for his outstanding recital of ‘Less, much less’ by Moniza Alvi. Highly commended were Jago Cahill-Patten, with his evocative recital of ‘Lines Composed Upon Westminster Bridge’ by William Wordsworth and Lucas Bloom, for a confident and powerful performance of ‘The Hermit’ by W H Davies. Thank you to all the parents who came to support their sons, but most of all thank you to our fantastic judge: Amanda Waggott. Her comments about the poems and performances were so insightful and supportive. Well done to all the boys!
From the Music Department – Inter-House Music
Inter-House Music songs were announced in assembly this morning and are as follows: Pembridge – Rather Be Westbourne – Counting Stars Chepstow – Paradise Dawson – Read All About It Soloists for the event (which is on Friday 30th June, immediately after assembly) will be announced to the boys next week.
From the French Department – French Theatre Company
Miss Taylor writes…
On Wednesday, Onatti, a French theatre company, visited Wetherby to perform their latest French play. Years 3, 4 and 5 all thoroughly enjoyed watching ‘Shipwrecked en France’ and it was an opportunity for the boys to hear some of the French that they have been learning. It was great fun and many boys loved participating in the play. The performance was pitched at the perfect level for the lower school boys and the actors interacted with the boys superbly. We look forward to welcoming them back to Wetherby very soon!
From Clubs – Wetherby chess team keeps getting bigger and better! Mr Niccoli writes… Last weekend the Wetherby chess team travelled to Prestatyn in north Wales for the semi-final stage of the National Primary School’s Chess Championships. With over 400 children, 16 Wetherby boys, 2 days, 1 BBQ, and nearly 1500 games of chess, it was nonstop action! All the boys were a credit to the school. Camaraderie and team spirit was exemplary throughout from both children and parents! With over 400 teams competing in the various stages of the event, the standard was as high as it gets. Last year was Wetherby’s first time in the competition and at the Under 9 level we finished as the second highest placed school in the whole country. We had our reputation to defend and prove that it wasn’t a fluke. Despite losing half our team from last year to other schools we had managed to rebuild. This year we had two Under 9 teams through to the semi-final instead of one. We also had an Under 11 team through for the first time ever. The Under 9 A team were from Wetherby Prep Years 3/4 and they absolutely smashed it. They were strong from the start, with two convincing 5-0 wins in a row, which meant Wetherby would spend the rest of the event playing the top teams. It was two days of intense chess and we finished in second place just half a point behind first. This means we are once again through to the final 8 teams in the country. The Under 9 B team was a mix of Prep and Pre-prep boys. With two rounds to go they were actually in 3rd place and managed to finish an amazing 8th out of the 30 teams playing. Most schools can only manage to field one A team! The A and B team all play in the same group so a very good result for them indeed, they are also very young so the future looks bright! The Under 11s managed to finish a very credible 10th out of 30, a great result. We only had one Year 6 in this team so really something to build on for next year. Wetherby has really built a reputation for itself. The best thing was hearing other schools saying things like "oh you're Wetherby" or “that is the team to watch out for”. We wish the Under 9s the best of luck in the finals and we look forward to even stronger teams for next year! Performance Corner – Functional Movement - Kettlebell Training
Mr McClinton writes… I had an interesting email recently regards to the effect of kettlebell training and how this differs from other forms of weighted training. Here are my thoughts on the topic. Kettlebell workouts target the major muscle groups - shoulders, trunk, back, quadriceps, hamstrings, and more. The focus is on a full-body, cardio and strength-building workout, all with time in mind. The aim of kettlebell workouts is to raise the heart rate for a shorter, more intense period of time as well as the obvious health gains such as building lean muscle and reducing body fat. The irregular nature of the handle grip; large diameter, as well as the kettle bell being bottom heavy, results in atypical swinging moves away from the body and a continuous attempt to self-correct this moving as a result. Studies have demonstrated that 10 weeks of consistent kettlebell training may support metabolic function, calorie expenditure as well as increasing resting metabolic rate by up to 7% i.e. the fat burning state. Kettlebell training may also improve general physical performance, movement control and walking patterns. The body moves in multiple directions at different angles at all times during a kettlebell workout. This movement is regarded as dynamic and ever changing. Standard weight machine workouts help build muscles by targeting specific muscle groups. Kettlebell workouts have the ability to build strength and lean muscle across a range of muscle groups. This full body integrative approach acts as a stabilizer for whole body functional movement as well as potentially alleviating prevalence to injury. Let me know how you get on!
