Tuesday 22 September 1pm | Endecott House | £15 Inspired by the Hammer House of Horror tradition, this two hour workshop is run by Angharad Barlow who trained in costume and technical effects at London College of Fashion. Angharad has worked in theatre, film and TV creating special effects, costumes and creatures for The Royal Ballet, and for West End productions including The Lion King. Book early and take your place at the masquerade! 8pm & 10pm | The Globe Inn | £7 for one, £10 for both Chagford Film Festival pays tribute to the amazing career of Christopher Lee who sadly passed away this year. His career spanned from the early 1950s right through to his roles in The Lord of the Rings and the Star Wars films. He held the record for being the tallest man ever given a leading role until he recently had to share the honour with Vince Vaughan. Watch both these classic Hammer Horror films in one sitting... if you dare! DOUBLE FEATURE Tuesday 22 September 8pm | Chagford Church | £7 The story of the most brilliant and celebrated physicist of our time, Stephen Hawking, and Jane Wilde, the arts student with whom he fell in love while studying at Cambridge in the 1960s. Little was expected from Stephen Hawking, a bright but shiftless student of cosmology, given just two years to live following the diagnosis of a fatal illness at 21 years of age. However, Jane’s love galvanised him, and he went on to be known as Einstein’s successor, as well as a husband and father to their three children. 7pm | Secret locations! Meet at The Globe Inn | £5 You are invited to an intimate evening of viewing at secret locations in and around Chagford. Gather at The Globe Inn and you will be escorted to one of our hosts’ homes where you will watch a film featuring the gritty realism of classic kitchen sink dramas from the 1960s. Your hosts for the evening look forward to welcoming you into their homes and sharing the best of British cinema. Seats are very limited so early booking is highly recommended. Wednesday 23 September 2.30pm | Endecott House | £4 Our Wednesday afternoon ‘Golden Oldie’ is always a popular event. This year we’re showing the 1952 classic High Noon. Former marshal Will Kane (Gary Cooper) is preparing to leave the small town of Hadleyville, New Mexico, with his new bride Amy (Grace Kelly), when he learns that local criminal Frank Miller has been set free and is coming to seek revenge on the marshal who turned him in. 8pm | Jubilee Hall | £12 Chagford’s very own Elizabeth-Jane Baldry is one of the finest harpists in the country, famous at film festivals across the world for her innovative scores composed for a whole range of classic silent films, from Nosferatu to slapstick. She will perform her own score to this charming 1923 film starring Marion Davies, a sentimental comedy telling the tale of an Irish immigrant who must masquerade as her own brother in order to claim an inheritance. Wednesday 23 September 2.30pm | The Globe Inn | £5 A Bollywood-style update of Jane Austen’s classic tale, in which Mrs Bakshi is eager to find suitable husbands for her four unmarried daughters. When the rich single gentlemen Balraj and Darcy come to visit, the Bakshis have high hopes, though circumstance and boorish opinions threaten to get in the way of romance. 8pm | The Globe Inn | £7 Tarantino’s unforgettable, stylish, hip and ultra-violent cult film. John Travolta is as different from his character in Grease (showing on Friday night) as you can possibly imagine! 8pm | Chagford Church | £7 (Polish with English subtitles) Directed by the hugely talented Pawel Pawlikowski, Ida has won many prestigious awards around the world, including the Oscar for Best Foreign Language film. It tells the story of Anna, a young nun, who leaves the convent to visit her aunt before taking her vows. 2pm | Endecott House | £15 A hobby that started when she found a book of recipes by 1930s Hollywood stars in a secondhand bookshop, Jenny now cooks and presents these recipes, together with film clips from the time, giving a fascinating insight into the lives and tastes of the stars from Hollywood’s golden era. How about Marlene Dietrich’s Lamb Chops en Casserole, or Vincent Price’s Chicken in Vermouth? Includes tasters from the recipes being presented. 8pm | The Globe Inn | £7 Chris Vile, the award-winning Dartmoor-based cameraman who filmed this fascinating documentary with writer and traveller William Dalrymple, will introduce the film and answer your questions afterwards. Dalrymple explores Africa, the Middle East and Pakistan to discover the stories, music and spirituality of the Sufi religion. Featuring the music of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Salman Ahmed amongst others, this film shows a side of Islam not often seen in the Western media. 8pm | Jubilee Hall | £12 | Followed by 50s disco with bar Join in the party and sing along to all the old favourites, including Summer Loving, You’re the One That I Want, Grease Lightning and so many more… (and don’t worry about forgetting the words – they’ll all be on the screen, karaoke-style). Afterwards there will be a disco and bar where all you T-Birds and Pink Ladies can dance the night away showing off your best hand jives and rock n roll! 7.30pm | Chagford Church | £10 Recognised internationally for their exciting schedule of live performances and cutting edge recordings, Delta Saxophone Quartet blur the lines of musical categories.
