Last week was NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK!

National Science Week is Australia's annual celebration of science and technology. It's a chance for everyone to see science, talk about science and do science. The theme this year is ‘Deep Blue: innovation for the future of our oceans’. Below are some tasks that relate to this topic and some fun hands on experiments that you can try. ● The Zoo Virtual Excursions ● Tornado in a Jar ● Thermochromic Slime ● Animal Detective ● Flower Dissection ● Weather Stations

*You will find these activities and MORE in the ‘SWIM Resources’ section on the 5/6 Weebly page. You are welcome to continue your SWIM project instead. You could also do an experiment AND your SWIM project.

Reading Continue reading/listening to ‘Once’ by Morris Gleitzman. Listen to Chapter 7 and answer the following questions. 1. What is the significance

of the following - ● the armbands ● Felix’s predictions about

the future. 2. How does Felix answer

his own question - ‘Why would the Nazi’s make people suffer like this just for the sake of some books? Why is this a turning point?

*You will find the video of Miss Jacobson reading ‘Once’ in the Literacy Resources sections on the 5/6 Weebly page.

Writing Today you will begin planning your Historical Snapshot. We would like you to set out a plan of sorts before you begin. Using the five senses (print the following template if you wish), write a sentence or two for each sense that you will include in your final piece of writing. Remember that historical fiction is based on true events and details, with fictional characters. Put yourself in the moment. If you have chosen to use the picture prompt for Writing this week, use the template to describe the soldiers senses.

*The template can be found in the Literacy Resources section on the 5/6 Weebly page.

Tech Maths Today your task is to engage with some interactive tasks. Access

Here you have a pod of set tasks named Revision Mentals: Yr 5: 85-96 Yr 6: 121-132 Remember you can have a paper and pencil next to you to help you work out answers. If you don’t complete all of the tasks you can always revisit in the next few days and complete the pod.

Select 2 activities to complete from the activity list. This can be found on the FARL website. 15 minutes.

Trick shot Tuesday

This will be your opportunity to create and complete your own trick shot.

Can you create a different shot to the one you did last week?

Think:

● Table tennis ball in a cup ● Basketball shot from a

distance or over your head ● Football/soccer kick into a bin

from around a corner ● Frisbee through two trees ● Tennis ball throw - knocking

over a bottle ● Behind the back throwing ● Golf putt or chip

Floating, Hanging, Weightless Art

Have a look at Teamlab’s amazing environment of hanging, floating, weightless art using orchids: https://youtu.be/brtqGLQb4fY Make your own hanging art using natural found objects and some string. See my example photos and the video for how I made mine and the sorts of things you might like to find and use to make yours. Or simply follow steps 1-3 here: 1. Find some organic found objects like

seaweed, sticks, shells, native blossoms, flowers, stones, sticks, bark, natives grasses, cuttings, banksias, seed pods, etc

2. Using a long piece of string, twine or wool, tie them on one at a time to form a hanging arrangement of your objects. It can be either vertical or horizontal.

3. When tying you can wind the string several times around each object before making secure knots and if you need to add more string simply tie extra onto the end of the bit you’re using.

You can share your artwork by uploading a photo of your finished piece on the Specialist page of the Flexible and Remote learning website where it says ‘Show Miss Reark your artwork!’ I look forward to seeing and sharing what you create. Check out the FARL website for more techno art by Teamlab.

Wednesday BLOCK 1  BLOCK 2  BLOCK 3 OPTIONAL:BLOCK 4  English  Maths  Physical Activity  Wellbeing Wednesday

Reading Continue reading/listening to ‘Once’ by Morris Gleitzman. Listen to Chapter 8 and answer the following questions. 1. Why does Felix go from 6

hours of storytelling to keep Zelda’s spirits up, to the point where he suddenly hasn’t ‘got anymore stories’?

2. Describe the toll such a journey takes on Felix and Zelda - physically and mentally. How is it they manage to survive?

*You will find the video of Miss Jacobson reading ‘Once’ in the Literacy Resources sections on the 5/6 Weebly page.

Writing Using the ‘five senses’, begin writing your Historical Snapshot. Remember you are in a moment of time. What you are writing is like describing a photograph. Try to remember some of the writing techniques that we used recently such as hooks, connectives, show don't tell, alliteration, rule of three, etc. Also remember to include the five senses from yesterday in your writing. If you have been using the picture prompt, use your sentences from yesterday’s template to begin writing a detailed ‘Show Don’t Tell’ about the soldier. Remember to SHOW how the soldier is feeling, don’t TELL how the soldier is feeling. e.g. DON’T WRITE - The soldier walked slowly. DO WRITE - The soldiers weary feet plodded one in front of the other.

Number Today’s task requires you to complete rounding off numbers so you can make accurate estimations when adding. There are 2 sheets to complete. After you have completed each sheet, choose 5-10 of the problems (a mixture from the 2 sheets) and ● find the EXACT total of

each problem ● find the difference

between the estimation and the exact total of each problem.

Extension (optional) ● find the number that is

halfway between the two original numbers in the problem

e.g. 4,372 and 8,134. The number halfway between these two numbers is 6,253. *The estimation sheets can be found in the Maths Resources section of the 5/6 Weebly page.

Select 2 activities to complete from the activity list. This can be found on the FARL website. 15 minutes.

Wellbeing Wednesday is all about YOU

When we experience intense emotions, these feelings can be embodied, meaning we feel them in our bodies, not just our minds. They may include reactions like difficulty sleeping, crying, palpitations (rapid heartbeat), sweating, headaches, tummy aches and being short-tempered.

To manage these reactions, we often need a way to physically calm ourselves. A guided relaxation is one way to do this. (From Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships)

Below are two Guided Relaxation stories that you could ask a member of your house to read to you. Alternatively, go to the Wellbeing Tab on the Flexible and Remote Learning website to listen to two of your teachers reading these guided relaxation stories.

This week’s Community Connection event is ‘CAMPING WEEK’. More Information can be found on the Wellbeing Tab on the IKPS Home Learning website.

Speaking & Listening Watch Episode 24 of BTN. Today we would like you to take notes on one of the stories in your BTN book. You can then turn this into a poster in your SWIM/Inquiry book. It should be creative, organised and include all relevant information.

*OPTIONAL You can still read today as well. Stamina/Independent read your own book for as long as you can.

Writing Continue to write your draft for your Historical Snapshot. When you have finished your draft, you will need to edit your work well and uplevel your vocabulary to improve the quality of your writing. You should also edit your work to improve your spelling and grammar. Those of you who have been using the picture prompt, continue to write a detailed ‘Show Don’t tell’ of the soldier in the picture.

Problem Solving Today a series of problems have been posed for you to work through. It is important that you approach these with a growth mindset. They should provide you with an opportunity to test your thinking. You should read through the problems and make note of ‘What Maths is this problem asking me to do?’ Each of the problems allows you to use your creativity as a mathematician. Try to find as many possibilities as you can. Make sure to organise your answers carefully. Have you been able to find all possibilities? Can you explain how you know you have found all the possibilities? *The problem solving questions can be found in the Maths Resources section of the 5/6 Weebly page.

Throwback Thursday

Thursday is all about playing games that your parents played when they were kids. Below is a list of games that I can think of that I played as a kid. You can play one of these or ask Mum, Dad or whoever is at home for one of their favourites.

Play a different game to the one you played last week.

● Elastics. Research a new song that you could sing.

● Hopscotch ● Marbles ● Totem tennis ● Backyard cricket (or any

sport in the backyard) ● Pitch and toss ● 40-40 home ● Hide and seek

Let’s set sail!

“Ladies and gentlemen, welcome aboard our deluxe cruise ship, sailing through the West Indies, past some of the world’s most beautiful tropical islands, and making our way to the extoic Dominican Republic”. This week, our journey will have us visit ‘La Republica Dominicana’, directly north from Venezuela, in the Carribean Sea. Download the ‘Choose your own Adventure’ page, and decide with your family which Dominican adventure you’re interested in. Maybe you’ll be designing the perfect swimming pool, or you could try out a crisp, salty snack. Dance around to ‘merengue’ music, learn how to braid hair, or take a trip to a coral reef. Remember you can complete just one or as many of the activities as you like! Then, fill in another page of your ‘Pasaporte’. Add the date, a picture of the flag, and then draw or write about your stay in paradise.

Reading Continue reading/listening to ‘Once’ by Morris Gleitzman. Listen to Chapter 9 and answer the following questions. 1. Explain what

Barney is doing. What sort of person do you think he is? What does he represent?

2. What impact does the realization that no one can protect the children have on Felix? How does this affect his belief in the power of stories?

*You will find the video of Miss Jacobson reading ‘Once’ in the Literacy Resources sections on the 5/6 Weebly page.

Writing

Today is the day to bring all of your writing efforts together and finalise your work for an audience. You can publish your work as a written copy or typed on the computer using Word. You might like to read your completed work to a family member and ask them to close their eyes to see if they can imagine what you’ve written.

Maths Games Today’s game is the ‘Place Value Game’. Most people will have played this game as a warm up before Maths in class. *A ‘How to play’ sheet and example are provided in the Maths Resources section on the 5/6 Weebly page. If you do not have a 0-9 dice a six sided dice will work as well. (Online dice are easy to find and you can select 0-9 dice). If you do not have someone to play against at home, you may choose to contact one of your classmates or friends to organise a game via ‘Zoom’, ‘Facetime’ or ‘House Party’. Play a best of 5 series. GOOD LUCK!!
