BINDER

• Target Covered: I. I will apply the concept of evolution by natural selection to examples and scenarios.

• What are we doing today?– Read Bed Bug Article– What is a theory?– Discuss data from Friday– Discuss Natural Selection– Discuss Natural Selection Scenarios in groups

• Announcements/Reminders– Don’t worry about diagrams for this unit. – See my wiki for homework– I will be checking things in Wednesday

Change places so that you are not with anyone from your Friday group. Bring your

nameplate

• Discuss Data from Friday• What factors came into play that influenced

predator success?• What factors came into play that influenced

prey success?• If all of your predators were knives, what

would have happened?

Evolution & Natural Selection• Our first unit in AP biology is the fundamental, unifying

concept of biology (and BIG IDEA #1): Evolution• The mechanism used to explain how populations of

organisms evolve is called Natural Selection• Natural Selection requires:

• VARIATION within a population for one (or many) traits• SURVIVAL of some variations more than others in a specific

environment• REPRODUCTION of those within the population who survive

• Differential survival and reproduction in a population means a group of organisms within a population in a given environment has a selective advantage.

The Armadillo Story

Extant organisms possess selective advantages for the environment in which they live.

The Armadillo Story

The environment determines whether or not the armadillo’s behavior has a selective advantage.

Natural selection concepts you should know & use!

• VARIATION• SELECTIVE PRESSURE or

ENVIRONMENTAL PRESSURE• SELECTIVE ADVANTAGE• SURVIVE & REPRODUCE• ADAPTATION• SPECIATION

Change in allele frequency within a population is called

biodiversity

Discuss your organism with your group

• What does it need to survive?• Does it have any special characteristics that

help it to get those things?• Pick one from your group to write about how

natural selection may have been at play. Use the next slide to help you.

Page 11: Monday, August 26 th , 2012 TAKE OUT YOUR NAME PLATE AND YOUR BINDER

Write how a trait one organism at your group has may have evolved by Natural Selection

Use ALL the terms below and underline terms in your definition

Limit your explanation to no more than FOUR sentences Each group member should write one sentence. Turn in group copy.

You are allowed to use a term more than once in your explanation

• Offspring• Reproduce• Environment• Selective pressure• Over time• Adaptation(s)

• Favorable (select[ed] for)• Unfavorable

(select[ed] against)• Variation(s)• Population• Survive (survival)
