Corneal Ectasia: Prevention and ManagementTuesday’s main symposium, chaired by Joseph Colin MD,France, and Josep Güell MD, Spain, will examinethe etiology, prevention and treatment of both the idiopathic and iatrogenic forms of corneal ectasia.
Francois Malecaze MD, France, will commence the session with a discussion on the genetic aspectsof corneal ectasia. He will describe the genes identified in association with the condition, theirprevalence, the proportion of cases that may be attributed to them, their influence on the molecularphysiology of corneal collagen and their possible interactions with environmental factors.
Juan J. Perez-Santonja MD, Spain, will follow with suggestions on the preoperative and peroperativeprevention of corneal ectasia in patients undergoing excimer laser refractive surgery.
Theo Seiler MD, Switzerland will provide a description of collagen cross-linking, a new procedure forthe treatment of keratoconus which may also have applications in refractive surgery. The techniqueinvolves instilling the cornea with riboflavin and exposing it to UV radiation in order increase thestiffness of corneal collagen. Results of an ongoing trial suggest that it is possible to transformprogressive keratoconus into forme fruste keratoconus.
Antonio Marinho MD, Portugal, will then discuss the use of intracorneal rings in the treatment ofcorneal ectasia. His presentation will include recommendations with regard the use of INTACS andFerrara rings in keratoconus and post-LASIK ectasia.
Turning to keratoplasty approaches for treatment of keratoconus, Mohammed Anwar MD SaudiArabia will provide a description of manual deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty with the big bubbletechnique. Dr Anwar’s procedure involves air injection in such a way that a large bubble is createdbetween stroma and Descemet's membrane.
Sadeer Hannush MD, USA, will conclude the session with a review of short and long term results inkeratoconus patients who have undergone penetrating keratoplasty.

I use the internet to widen my knowledge about ophthalmology; to find new instruments or newtechniques for surgery.
I use the internet to read about the newest research in my field and also to get information for theeight residents in my hospital about new techniques; I also use e-mail to communicate withcolleagues from other countries.
We only have one computer in the whole department; I use it for learning, to read articles, readnews on the EuroTimes page. Once I read an article about dry eyes and found new types of eyedrops that helped one of my patients with this condition.
