Corneal Ectasia: Prevention and Management Tuesday’s main symposium, chaired by Joseph Colin MD, France, and Josep Güell MD, Spain, will examine the etiology, prevention and treatment of both the idiopathic and iatrogenic forms of corneal ectasia. Francois Malecaze MD, France, will commence the session with a discussion on the genetic aspects of corneal ectasia. He will describe the genes identified in association with the condition, their prevalence, the proportion of cases that may be attributed to them, their influence on the molecular physiology of corneal collagen and their possible interactions with environmental factors. Juan J. Perez-Santonja MD, Spain, will follow with suggestions on the preoperative and peroperative prevention of corneal ectasia in patients undergoing excimer laser refractive surgery. Theo Seiler MD, Switzerland will provide a description of collagen cross-linking, a new procedure for the treatment of keratoconus which may also have applications in refractive surgery. The technique involves instilling the cornea with riboflavin and exposing it to UV radiation in order increase the stiffness of corneal collagen. Results of an ongoing trial suggest that it is possible to transform progressive keratoconus into forme fruste keratoconus. Antonio Marinho MD, Portugal, will then discuss the use of intracorneal rings in the treatment of corneal ectasia. His presentation will include recommendations with regard the use of INTACS and Ferrara rings in keratoconus and post-LASIK ectasia. Turning to keratoplasty approaches for treatment of keratoconus, Mohammed Anwar MD Saudi Arabia will provide a description of manual deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty with the big bubble technique. Dr Anwar’s procedure involves air injection in such a way that a large bubble is created between stroma and Descemet's membrane. Sadeer Hannush MD, USA, will conclude the session with a review of short and long term results in keratoconus patients who have undergone penetrating keratoplasty. 3 Vox Doc Do you use the internet for work at your hospital? I use the internet to widen my knowledge about ophthalmology; to find new instruments or newtechniques for surgery.

I use the internet to read about the newest research in my field and also to get information for theeight residents in my hospital about new techniques; I also use e-mail to communicate withcolleagues from other countries.
